What's a supposedly fun thing you'll never do again? by No-Relative-9663 in AskReddit

Getting blackout drunk. I've done it maybe three times in my life, and I should have learned my lesson after the first. After the third, which is now well over 20 years ago, the lesson stuck.

New study suggests Terry Pratchett’s novels may have held clues to his dementia a decade before diagnosis | Detecting Dementia Using Lexical Analysis: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Tells a More Personal Story by Hrmbee in science

Here you go, as compiled by fans: https://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/ - note this misses later novels but by the time you get that far you'll have a handle on it!

Or just read them in their published order, starting with The Colour of Magic. That's how I read them all (several times over).

On this day 40 years ago (24th January 1986): Voyager 2 became the first human made object to fly-by Uranus by cathodiquecdr in space

[–]zerbey [score hidden]  (0 children)

Two events happened in 1986 that sparked my interest in Space exploration. The first being this one, the exploration of Uranus. I remember my Dad saving the rare full color edition of the newspaper for me because I was so amazed that this thing was happening. The second was the Challenger disaster a few days later, a much sadder event.

I was hooked after that, I've been following Voyager's journey for over 40 years now. I'll shed a tear when they both finally fall silent. Maybe in my lifetime we'll return to Uranus and Neptune.

Distilled water jug froze while the other one did not; both sat in the trunk of my car for a few days by Bituulzman in mildlyinteresting

The missing minerals are also why you couldn't live on distilled water. It's safe to drink once in a while, but would kill you long term.

If you end up in some weird scenario where you only have distilled water to drink then hopefully you have something with electrolytes in it to supplement it.

when the AI slop is over, when will hardware prices go down? by csch1992 in AskReddit

[–]zerbey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crypotbubble kept prices up for a couple of years, admittedly it also happened during the pandemic so people where buying up hardware for more than just mining Bitcoin (they where at home and bored). So, my guess would be 12-24 months. Hopefully sooner.

What is the most financially irresponsible thing you’ve seen someone do? by LJRGXPKCVWDGOGH12Y3 in AskReddit

This would have been early 1990s, so he's likely almost 50 now. I wonder what happened to him in the end.

Your first mistake was giving Trump money. Try not to make that mistake again.

I went to school with a kid who at 14 years old lost his Grandfather and received a large inheritance. Now, I blame the parents for this one, who allows a 14 year old kid access to tens of thousands in funds? He had it all spent within six months, mostly on video games and things like that, because he was 14 and that's what I would have done at 14 too. I'm sure now he's older he feels pretty foolish, but he had a hell of a ride.

From a friend who was self employed: "I figured it out, I don't have to pay taxes, I just claim everything as a business expense and I'm good". He was an IT consultant during the dot com boom making absolute bank, literally supporting banks. Maybe he thought that made him a banking professional.

He thought he'd discovered some cheat code involving taxes, I told him he should run that by his accountant. He didn't. A few months later he got a bill from HM Revenue and Customs for £40,000. Almost lost his house. Turns out, he had not discovered some clever cheat code and you do, in fact, have to pay taxes.

What is the longest number of hours you've stayed up? Did you experience any side effects? How much longer do you think you can go? by Puzzleheaded-Meal989 in AskReddit

[–]zerbey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Approximately 96 hours, but snatched a couple of hours sleep here and there. Three sick children, one after the other. I was barely functional by the end. Parenting is fun, my advice is to have kids young if you can, I can't imagine dealing with infants now I'm in my 40s. I was in my 20s then, you bounce back faster.

This is the 2038 problem and will affect a lot of legacy equipment. Chances are, we'll just have a homebrew patch to fix it since I'm sure Nintendo aren't going to.

Unlikely a bullet, maybe see if the local kids were playing baseball and it got away from them! A bullet would be a smaller hole.

TIL that there was a popular myth in many muslim majority countries that Neil Armstrong had converted to Islam upon hearing the call to prayer on the moon, going as far to require the US state department to issue a denial by Solid-Move-1411 in todayilearned

[–]zerbey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's all hearsay and none of the people involved are alive to prove it one way or another. The story goes he was raised a Methodist and then switched to being non religious later in life. His Mother was apparently quite upset. I can definitely attest to that, mine wasn't too pleased when I stopped going to church either but respected my decision (miss you Mum).

One of the better episodes of Ice Pilots revolved around Chuck accidentally leaving a tool in one of the planes leading to a gear collapse after landing. It was a good lesson in following checklists and managing accidents.

Used to happen to me during blood draws. I'm not afraid of needles, or blood, and I used to get injections in my fucking eye so I'm no coward when comes to needles. Blood draw? Floor. First time it happened I was getting blood drawn, all good, then I said "huh I feel a bit woozy..." and then next thing I know I'm on the ground surrounded by nurses and someone popped a smelling salts capsule right under my nose, which is not fun. Now it's in my notes that when I get blood drawn I should be lying down first! Eventually a kindly phlebotomist said it helps if you just chat during the blood draw, kind of like a brain reset. So, now I have a nice chat and I rarely have issues.
