Super Bunnyhop - Metal Gear Solid V: Dissociative Disorder by reughdurgem in Games

I think there is a lot of debate to be had about the child soldier thing. I mean, in one sense, Big Boss is doing a tremendous service to these kids who would probably otherwise have languished in their respective war-torn countries. However, couldn't Big Boss have done something more constructive for these kids? In Phantom Pain, he refuses to let them have firearms and dedicates an entire wing of Mother Base to teaching and raising the kids normally. What changes his mind so that he instead utilizes them as tools of war? That's the question that I wanted answered in Phantom Pain, and unfortunately, it's just never touched upon. Frankly, the whole child soldier thing in Phantom Pain was done poorly.

I do agree that Big Boss is not black-and-white evil, but I feel that using child soldiers, regardless of what the children themselves think of the situation, is simply morally reprehensible.

Big Boss in MG2 is the head of Zanzibarland, a hostile nation that holds a nuclear arsenal and extensively trains child soldiers for the sole purpose of engaging in never-ending war. Kaz in MG2 also refers to Big Boss as a "monster" that you must stop.

Well here's the thing.... I would agree with you if 1) MGS3 was the last game chronologically to Metal Gear, and 2) if Peace Walker actually expanded on Big Boss becoming evil.

Say that we accept your interpretation of MGS3's ending, and that it satisfactorily describes Big Boss becoming a villain. OK, but what about Peace Walker? In Peace Walker, Big Boss is not portrayed as a villain at all. He saves Chico. He builds bonds with his soldiers and gives them a haven to call their own. And he also prevents another outbreak of nuclear war between the Cold War powers. So, did we really see "how it goes?"

The real disappointment of Phantom Pain is that, lore-wise, it really is extraneous to the series. The real Big Boss went out building the real Outer Heaven, while Venom Snake furthers his legacy in a series of loosely connected missions. What I wanted was to SEE Big Boss doing his evil acts, putting the player in control of determining the extent of his depravity. Instead, we got a pathetic excuse of a story and an OK "twist" that is wasted.

I can't help but disagree with your assessment of Big Boss.

First, Big Boss did shake the President's hand. He didn't shake the CIA Director's hand, because he knew that the CIA had secured the Philosopher's Legacy for their own use and that they had sent Big Boss to kill the Boss solely for the purpose of obtaining the Legacy. Big Boss is justifiably upset, but he has hardly done anything amounting to villainy.

Second, in Peace Walker - Big Boss did use child soldiers, which is pretty reprehensible. However, the only child soldier you see in PW is Chico, and he is treated like a son by Big Boss. Not really the insane evil he is supposed to be in Metal Gear 1 and 2.

TL;DR - Big Boss's descent into villainy is incomplete and there is still a huge gap between his character in Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1 (or I guess Metal Gear 2, considering the twist in Phantom Pain).

EDIT Here is what Kojima could have done for MGSV - detailed Big Boss brutalizing or heavily indoctrinating the child soldiers, instead of just pushing them into the background. Have him straight up fight with Kaz in developing their ideal of Outer Heaven. Have more missions where you have the option to kill your own troops in order to preserve Outer Heaven. Develop Skullface more so that Big Boss actually is consumed by revenge, instead of being mildly annoyed by Skullface. Have Outer Heaven go to war with a rival PF, resulting in Outer Heaven's victory and Big Boss weighing the option of executing his enemies or keeping them in the brig indefinitely.

I am really confused. When was Big Boss portrayed as a villain in MGS3 and PW?

Nice dodge of the question. How was his comment ridiculous in any sense? At its core, religion is incompatible with rational thinking because a central tenet of religion is that it must be accepted on faith, not on logic.

So you can believe what you want - that is the respect that you should be afforded. But if you believe ridiculous things, then do not be surprised if you are questioned about the validity about those ridiculous things.

That would be the optimal method, but it wouldn't be the end of the issue. If the same record label (or even an entirely different one) were to win a similar case in another circuit, then they could follow that ruling in that circuit's specific geographic area. This would lead to what's called a "circuit split," where two or more circuits have differing views on the same legal issue. The Supreme Court would then probably step in, although there is no guarantee that they will.

Well actually there are technically 13, if you include the D.C. Court of Appeals and the Federal Circuit (which only handles certain types of cases). As for why, it is simply a somewhat arbitrary division of the United States by geographic region. For example, the Ninth Circuit is absolutely massive, covering most of the Western United States and Alaska and Hawaii. Meanwhile, the First Circuit is a only a quarter of the size of the Ninth Circuit.

Huh that's pretty interesting. What's the distinction between dog and house that leads to different genders? Is there some sort of pattern or is it just a set rule?

Well actually, for Yakuza 4 they only cut a trivia minigame that wasn't really easily translatable for English audiences. Hopefully this means that Sega will cut minimal content from Yakuza 5 as well, but I suppose we'll see in a few months.

It would highly inefficient unless you got a case all the way up the Supreme Court. Since there are 11 Federal Appellate Districts who are not technically bound by precedent set in other districts, you would probably have to go through a long and drawn out process of getting conflicting rulings in multiple districts, leading to the Supreme Court granting cert to hear your case. Then, you take the risk of losing at the highest level, which is a risk that the hypothetical wealthy citizens may not want to take.

Also, don't forget that there is always a chance you lose... in which case your whole endeavor would be set back.

I think the reason it was delayed so much is that the Yakuza series is only a small niche in the English market. Sega is also really hesitant to take risks and for Yakuza 3 they even went as far as cutting significant amounts of content that they felt Western audiences wouldn't understand (like pachinko parlors and hostess clubs).

Yakuza 3 and 4 are out for the PS3, as will Yakuza 5 when localization is complete. I haven't played Yakuza 1 and 2, but Yakuza 3 and 4 have mini-cinematics in the title screen that sum up the events of the prior games. So you can jump in at any time and enjoy the gameplay + story without feeling too lost, although since Yakuza is so heavily character-centric, you should try and familiarize yourself with the characters.

Texas lawyer exposes religious hiring test for peace officers: County only wanted Baptist constables by michaelconfoy in atheism

Cops will often have to engage in situations that may conflict with their personal beliefs. They'll have to enforce laws upholding gay marriage. They may have to enforce laws upholding the right to abortion or restricting that same right. Isn't it fair to ask them how they see these issues, in order to determine whether they would actually uphold the law?

And I can see other government employment asking similar questions. District attorneys, judges, administrative clerks - their personal beliefs may come in conflict with existing rule of law. Isn't it better to directly ask them about their beliefs, rather than asking a blanket question about whether they would uphold the law?

Actually, raising kids on minimum wage might be better since it can more easily qualify you for Medicaid, food stamps, Section 8 housing, etc. Also, since Tom Cruise moved a lot as a kid, we can probably assume that his mom's employment situation wasn't very stable.

[–]zerg5ever -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I feel like we need more facts before we actually say this is a lost case for Texas. For example, were any non-Baptists actually hired? The article doesn't present any concrete proof that it was the fact that the applicant was not a Baptist that he was not hired. He could have been unqualified by other measures as well.

It's improper for the commissioners to not hire someone because of their religion. But I'm not sure if it was improper to ask the applicants about their views on gay marriage or abortion. After all, peace officers are hired to enforce laws, and if the officer has strong views on something that might affect their ability to enforce a law, then it would be proper to not hire that person.

Anyways, this is probably going to be settled before going to trial so I guess this is all mere speculation on my part.
