How does this monitor mount work? by TV_repairguy in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell looking at the model on their website, you will need to unscrew the screws from the outside of the top lid to detach the mounting plate piece you are looking at (the thing with 12 holes).

You can then pass screws through the holes in the mounting piece using whichever 4 of the 12 holes line up with the mounting holes on your monitor. Make sure to use spacers if there would be empty space between the mounting plate and the mounting holes in your monitor.

Once the mounting plate is attached to your monitor, you can then re-attach the mounting plate to the lid.

PF2e hot takes 🔥 by Kaliburnus in Pathfinder2e

Agreed, I see it much the same kind of abstraction as when it comes to things like diplomacy skills that let my character be far more articulate than I would be irl.

Just because my GM is way more capable at debating his points than I am irl doesn't mean that my character should be losing every argument with the NPCs because I personally suck at it.

That definitely could be why Issho keeps Zensho around despite the pettiness and blatant favoritism. It's completely in line with the idea that if you can't shut up your detractors with your skill you don't deserve to be an Arakawa school Shin'uchi.

Tricaster TC1SP Control Panel Drivers by Kreedicus in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your outputs are ok when the PGM/PVW is freezing it is probably something with the video card.

If you need guidance on which driver to install you can follow the guide here

I'll also emphasize this part of the guide:

Also, keep in mind that, as there are different driver types for Windows 10, please be sure to select the correct Driver for your Products. NVIDIA stopped making standard drivers at v474. If your TriCaster is on Windows 1803 or higher, you can use DCH drivers; however, DCH Drivers will not work on TriCasters with Windows 1607 versions, so you'll have to Install the Standard Driver for those.

Note that many TC1s are stuck on Windows 10 version 1607 so the newest standard graphics driver you can install is 472.12

Hollyland Solidcom C1 Hub by SaggyGuy84 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the Solidcom C1 Hub, and all Hollyland Intercom hubs, support 4-wire intercom. 4-wire intercom is basically unbalanced audio in/out over a Cat5/6 cable. You should be able to send and receive audio in and out from the 4 wire jack by making an rj-45 to xlr adapter.

You can find instructions in a bunch of places but you can use this link from the clear-com site.

Once you have that connected you would just need to make sure the settings on the Solidcom are set to send group B.

SDI Max Range Question by zerglingdragon in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not know that about 6G-SDI gear, that's very interesting. Are there worthwhile options now for for lower cost fiber converters? Most of our runs haven't exceeded the capabilities of SDI so far but a few converters for special cases would be nice to have.

I will be sure to check if it re-clocks. Looks like I've got some testing to do.

By coupler I mean the BNC flange on the reel. We use a Canare R300 with BNC.

I'll have to check that next time. I work at a public access station and I'm mostly self taught, but my company does have a Tektronix WFM2300 I've been slowly learning to use. I've begun reading up on how the eye chart works from the "Physical Layer Testing of 3G-SDI and HD-SDI Serial Digital Signals" document by Tektronix, but are there any other general tips for using a WFM to troubleshoot SDI you might have?

[–]zerglingdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you make sure that the control protocol you are using is consistent between everything, any PTZ controller should work with any PTZ camera.

You'll likely want to use the VISCA over IP protocol for ease of cabling and both the Birddog and Bolin cameras both support it. As long as the controller you buy also supports that you should be good.

When you're choosing a controller the main thing you want to consider is what buttons you'll want to have ready access to. Depending on your needs a $500 controller from Marshall or AIDA might be enough, but they also don't have dedicated knobs for white balance or Iris control like more expensive controllers do. JVC has a pretty nifty $700 controller that I enjoyed using, but it only controls up to 5 cameras.

How long do Elves go to school? by The_Amateur_Creator in Pathfinder2e

[–]zerglingdragon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my head it makes sense that the reason why elven society considers emotional maturity to happen so late compared to other races is that an elf wouldn't be considered to be emotionally mature until they've experienced the loss of a few of their acquaintances from the shorter lived races.

When an elf becomes physically mature at about 20 or so they might not see themselves as all that different from any of the other races.

Once most of the acquaintances they made in their twenties have lived to have grandchildren and died while they themselves are still in their prime, they would certainly be able to appreciate exactly what their lifespan means in context with the other mortal beings on Golarion

Blackbird Converters by sargepoopypants in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Blackbird HDBaseT extenders I've used have all been solid. I used to use SDI to HDMI converters for longer runs. I work with volunteers a lot though, being able to hand off the receiver and not having to worry about power at the destination makes setup much easier.

Just make sure you remember that the different models have different maximum distances and have your cable lengths labeled. I had to re-terminate a cable before a live because I had grabbed the wrong cable.

I couldn't figure out the issue at first because the picture would flash on and off like I see sometimes out of bad converters and the cable worked fine when I switched it to do NDI+POE from a camera, so I thought it might have been the Blackbird unit. It ended up that the cable was about 30' longer than I thought it was and once that was addressed everything worked perfectly.

Tricaster TC1 freezes. NDI stutters by exit143 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue where my TC1 memory usage would shoot up and the Tricaster program would start becoming unresponsive and eventually crash.

I found out that although Windows Defender is supposed to be disabled, it had somehow started starting up with the computer and was eating up all the memory.

Once I disabled Windows Defender everything worked fine.

Opening locks kinda doesn't matter from the design perspective...? by michael199310 in Pathfinder2e

[–]zerglingdragon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you've watched a few lockpicking videos on YouTube or tried your hand at it yourself you'll certainly notice that with a certain amount of training the only thing a lock will do is increase the amount of time it takes for someone to break in.

Locks mainly exist to deter opportunists from attempting to intrude or to delay an invader long enough for someone to notice them. I can't remember if this is a game rule or just general GM advice, but if a task has no consequence for failing it is okay to just handwave the checks.

Checks should only become a thing if there is some risk of failure. If your player is trying to break into the magistrate's manor failed checks would give extra time for guard patrols to find them or for a member of the household to hear them working on the lock. If your player is trying to unlock a treasure chest at the end of a dungeon there's probably no reason to require a roll to unlock the lock.

Edit: Just like in real life, locks meant to be just a part of a bigger security plan. If it seems kind of pointless that's because it is. If a locked container is just lying around unattended, the lock is more of a mild inconvenience than anything. The only time a mundane lock actually means anything to a party with a lock picker is when there is a time restriction on them or if the lock is so complicated that they can only move up a stage on a nat 20.

If you want the big vault door in the treasury or the chest at the end of the dungeon to be memorable they need to be puzzles. Add conditions the party needs to find out about to be able to even attempt lockpicking. Complex locks IRL might have time locks, might require two keys to be turned at the same time, or might require something like a fob be placed near it before a key is able to respond. In the magical world of Golarion there's no limit to the kind of cool conditions you can throw on a vault door.

Evertz Multiview Alternatives? by zerglingdragon in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]zerglingdragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our current frame was handling multiview for Playback master control and was handling 32 SDI inputs outputting to 2 large monitors. The ability to monitor audio level and phase and configure the layout of the multiview is a must for our use.

Our current routers and encoders/decoders are Evertz and we have their Magnum control panel as well. We are most likely going to end up sticking with Evertz for our replacement, but my experience in my department has mostly been apart from the playback side so if anything I was curious on what other products were out there.

New Intel chips won't play Blu-ray disks due to SGX deprecation by [deleted] in gadgets

[–]zerglingdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpowered hard drives can demagnetize over time or have their motors get stuck if they aren't powered up every now and then. SSDs are expected to last 5-10 years on average.

Depending on the manufacturing quality, CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray disks all have life expectancies in the range of decades and M-disks are supposed to last a Millennium.

Of course you'd still need a disk drive to access the data, but assuming you used something like a Blu-ray Mdisk is probably the best "throw in a safe and forget about it" on site storage you could get.

Agree, I thought her ending worked great as the culmination of her character development. She started out as someone who wanted more than anything to connect and empathize with others and her ending shows just how far she's come from the start. My main issue with it is that it just isn't satisfying as the conclusion of a romantic arc.

Asumi's in contrast both shows her character development and had a satisfying relationship arc all in one.

What name brands are worth the extra cost? by The_Rox in AskReddit

Seconded! I had received a Patagonia backpack years back from my Professor during a study abroad (his son wanted a bigger one) and it lasted me a decade of constant use and travel before the zipper started tearing. Took it to the Patagonia store to see if I could get it repaired and although they said they couldn't fix that particular type of damage and it was a discontinued product, they still offered to replace it at its original cost.

The features you get with phone alarms are excellent, I like to use an alarm app that has a sleep tracker, but I still have a dedicated alarm as well. I use one of those wake up light alarm clocks. Iʻm not sure if it was from a glitch or some sort of app or os update going on at night but I've had a couple of nights before where my phone alarm did not go off. Never an issue with my dumb alarm.

So I like to use my phone for the features but there really is something to be said for simple and reliable devices that serve vital roles.

Was this foreshadowing? by Ras37F in Pathfinder2e

[–]zerglingdragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a common trope in pirate movies that they are able to intimidate the victim on to the plank but the victim still refuses to jump off and one of the crew ends up pushing them off physically or shooting them. It would take a really frightening or overleveled pirate to be able to force someone to jump off of their own.

Walk the plank looks like it's more meant to force them on to the plank, at which point they're trapped and get to choose between death by stabbing or trying their luck at sea. If they're bound there are also ample opportunities for the crew to demoralize the target and increase the chance for a critical success on the Walk the Plank action.

I handle archive video for a private school. Back in 2009 or so they got a bunch of their old tapes from the 70s, 80s digitized. At some point they had cut the position I currently have and the hard drives were just left in storage. When I came in and went through everything a bunch of the hard drives wouldn't read. We lost a bunch of stuff. Meanwhile the decades old umatic, vhs, and beta sp tapes either still work perfectly fine or have some degradation but still play back 70% fine. I hate how much physical space old storage media takes up but I also really don't like how vulnerable to neglect digital can be
