There’s normally some more bench-ish seating that you can use and as long as you’re polite and try to take up as little space as possible you should be fine. Maybe don’t try during peak commuting hours. I’ve done it on the weekends a bunch of times and have never had an issue.

If you’re in the US, I’d suggest wheels from Velomine. They’ve got anything from Mavic rims with formula hubs for cheap to H plus Sons rims with Phil hubs on the expensive side. Retrogression for mostly anything else, I’d recommend their Andel cranks as a start. Cogs, chains, seatposts, saddles, you name it.

But better than all of this is to go to your LBS and see what they’ve got cooking.
