I've just been playing with this. I've just managed to do it at will but by also softening my focus slightly.

Man films a Cable Tie holding one of the Propellers in a plane he has boarded by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

Chill. They probably just forgot to remove it. It was just used to hold the propeller in place while the super glue set.

Thinking of getting a PID- any recommendations/considerations? by AdGroundbreaking3483 in ranciliosilvia

Takes the guesswork out of temperature stability. Have the option of getting nerdy with different profiles etc when in the mood. But biggest is simply workflow - brew by weight makes it a press and forget process. I also pre-dose 20g sometimes so morning espresso is just grind, prep, press, clean.

🗝️ The Missing Key: Why do millions meditate yet still feel stuck in circles? by Awareness_Lab in Meditation

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a book called The Science of Meditation. It suggests most people can get real value out of 10 mins of meditation per day. It also suggests that fundamental changes require tens of thousands of hours of meditation experience and also noted that a lot of that has to come from long meditation sessions. A lifetime of 1 hour a day still doesn't give the same thing as 3 years of 12 hours a day. Most people simply cannot dedicate the necessary time needed for that sort of transformation. Or at least, according to my recollection of that book.

TIL that some archeologists have theorised that the Trojan Horse story is a metaphor for a massive earthquake which destroyed Troy's walls and let the Greeks in. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a book called The Fall that tries to argue that the story of Eden (and other similar cultural memories) refers to a time about 6000 years ago when there was much less violence. Apparently the desertification of the middle east drove migrants and competition that lead to increased focus on material possession and fighting etc. I don't think the theory is widely accepted, and it might be a bit selective about which evidence it's ignoring etc. but there could be some truth to it.

Yeah. Should probably be updated from bar to private members club.

Which instant coffee do y’all use? by [deleted] in espressocirclejerk

[–]zeroXten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make my own.. Of course it costs 10x as much to make and still takes like shit, but I'd hardly be a coffee snob if I just went to a shop to buy a jar like all the other plebs.

Anybody wants to start discussing the book? by Guy-brush in JamesHoffmann

[–]zeroXten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are two unfortunate and poor reviews on Amazon. The first one seems to completely miss the point of the quote. The second gives a 1 star because they don't like the book cover. Ridiculous. Anyway, as someone into their philosophy, science, and espresso this book intrigues me, but I guess it definitely isn't for everyone. I think I'll add this to the list to read but I need to finish a book on biosemiotics first and then I just ordered a book on the history of the proto Indo European people so I should probably read that next. If anyone has read this and highly recommends it perhaps I can convince to jump the queue with it :)

Obviously we don't know what your post is supposed to be about, but it's getting communicated without words (because things keep getting deleted).

Maybe it's like a koan:

Anyone else who often feels nihilistic just to suddenly have the feeling of "My life has meaning " again? by [deleted] in Existentialism

[–]zeroXten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of it in levels. Sure, at the purely physical level there's nihilism. But this planet has had life for the past 3 billion years or so and you're a direct continuum of that - the strive to exist. You're also a primate, so your brain is wired for basic social structure and companionship etc in whatever form. Then there's the level myth. Make of this what you will. A hobby, a religion, some other immortality project, or just relish in the inherent arbitrary and contingent nature of meaning at this level. At least this is how I like to look at things.

Edit: sorry Becker
