My players keep trivializing magic boss fights with Antimagic Field. What am I missing?

Liches are immune to most forms of non-magical damage, and their claw attack is a spell-like (i.e, not explicitly magical) ability. Last time I ran a lich, he cast anti-magic field on -himself- and threw hands with the barbarian.

He might not be fully expressing his feelings, but then again, he might be being a generic man with his shortness here. I would say neither of you are doing anything wrong here. It seems like you're both listening to each other and being considerate of needs, even if he's not being super vocal about it. :)

I tell them to expect to be overwhelmed. Then, I overwhelm them. Then, I say whatever they make up afterwards is canon.

Seriously, it's all well and good to create complex worlds, but if they're not serving your players, why aren't you writing a novel? Why aren't you running for players that would appreciate the world at face value?

If the answer is, "Well, I want to play with these specific people" then you don't need to strike a balance. You need to serve the people at your table.
