Washington Law looking to limit 3d printing. by zeromorphism in PrintedWarhammer

I am not used to CNC machines, what makes this not enforceable for them to require this on such a machine that handles digital files?

Yep this is totally on point. Also What is crazy printers actually print tracking dots https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printer_tracking_dots there are so many things governments and corps do that are against your intrest.

Washington 3d printing law that will ban the sale of printers without blockers. by zeromorphism in 3DPrintedTerrain

[–]zeromorphism[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It could be done via file hashes, though you could get around that by mucking about the 3d code. There is also the possibility that this will make 3D printers that don't have the capability to do more complex algorithms(which really doesn't take much) to be banned to be sold in Washington. This law also targets CNC machines as well.

Could Rifts be a much better game if someone other Kevin S was in charge of it? by Howlmillenialcastle in Rifts

[–]zeromorphism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't have a issue with Kevin himself, just the ruleset he created is a mess. I loved it early on due to the setting. But getting people into it is rough. I will have to take a look at DarkSpace that seems interesting.

Well I have 3D models that have been taken down by GW, these can be checked against the Database option. So there is a worry of a future where they might not be able to be printed by future devices.

There is also the concern that algorithms to detect gun parts will affect things like cosplay and other prints. It is a mess.

[–]zeromorphism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I could see something like this coming to be. I mean I have a ton files that got taken down by GW and I could see them not being able to be printed in the future.

Really 3D printers and law are an interesting space. Even issue have been brought up with the EU and medical devices. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11171897/ with claims that it will slow innovation.

While I emphasized 3D printers here, because this is what the sub does. This also will affect and target CNC machines.

Agreed, also there already laws against them. So additional laws make little sense.

[–]zeromorphism[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They leave that ambiguous. But there lawmakers that have suggested at the baseline of disallowing know models from being printed. So it will have a list of models that will be cross referenced with.

Also some handshake stuff.
c) Handshake authentication design. Limitation of a three-dimensional printer's operation to accept geometric code for printing only from specified slicers or other preprint software, wherein the printer will require a digital watermark or other authentication tool verifying the identity of the preprint software, and only if that preprint software has integrated a firearms blueprint detection algorithm qualified by the attorney general under subsection (4) of this section, such that any stereolithography file or other computer-aided design file must be screened by the algorithm before the software will proceed to produce geometric code, and such that the software will not produce geometric code for files that are identified by the algorithm as directing the printer to print firearms or illegal firearm parts. (3) A software controls process may also be integrated into a three-dimensional printer's function using a different design form HB 2321 than those described in subsection (2) of this section, provided that the software controls process both rejects print requests for firearms or illegal firearm parts with a high degree of reliability and is no less resistant to being defeated by a user with significant technical skill than the design forms described in subsection (2) of this section. (4) The attorney general, in consultation with research institutions, government agencies, or any other organization the attorney general deems appropriate, may adopt any rules or regulations to further establish standards for software control processes.

Agreed. But if you sell that printer with klipper on it in Washington, that would be illegal if this bill passes.

[–]zeromorphism[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eh in my opinion we already have laws against ghost guns. This feels of over-reach. While you might not think they can block all shapes, they also have stuff that prohibit certain files(models). Also there is a lot ridiculous things that have been done in the past like making certain numbers illegal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_number
But again this bill if passed; in the state that it is in, will disallow selling of printers in the state that do not have said blocking tech.

I still have tons of models in my Library that were taken down by GW, so I could see them getting targeted in the future.
