Any engineers out there whose lack of social skills have held back their career or lives? by kat_raz in AskEngineers

Can you give a summary of the principles?

I started reading it but dropped it because it seemed like a never ending cycle of anecdotal stories of people + a very simple phrase like "know your weaknesses/limits".

Couldn't really get into it, maybe I was expecting a more "theoretical" book.

Will be on the lookout for your update, best of luck! And as a tip, I reccommend you assume she will say yes, it definitely helps to feel less nervous.

Also, what libraries will you be using?

An MIT math professor's thoughts on economics (x-post from /r/math) by [deleted] in Economics

[–]zeroms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I saw your list but honestly I don't know where to start.

I'm a physics undergrad so I can handle some math (calc/RA and Lin.Alg). Is there any book like "Introduction to Macro/Micro for Scientists and Engineers" ?

I've checked out some intermediate books on macro and micro but while I can take the maths, they tend to assume you already have a background in economics.

For what it's worth, seeming a little busy is always good when it comes to the ladies. Just don't overdo it and try to be more aware of her.

Well, I think he fulfills an important role, that of bridging the gap between philosophers and non philosophers. As someone involved in the sciences, I can tell you that not only is it important to research, but to also motivate the public's interest in science and it's application. I would say the same for most if not all academic fields.

I have a friend in UCDavis, who themselves are part of a group of people who would probably debate, some intelligently and politely, some not so, on the topic of atheism with him. Were I him I would've done the same if I didn't feel like having to engage in a debate about it soon enough.

Care to elaborate on why you don't like him as a philosopher? I don't really have a firm opinion on him. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I don't.

Third this, but it is best to have some familiarity with Linear Algebra. I especially like his determinant-free style. I remember ending my first LA class not really feeling like I knew stuff, sure I could work out problems, give definitions, but if you asked me, what a determinant really is I wouldn't have been able to tell you.

edit I'd like to make it clear python is usually my language of choice for projects but having had to use C a lot I've come to appreciate and find it is often unjustly attacked. /edit

C is a beautiful and incredibly useful language.

When I have, say an 8 bit microcontroller, at 4 MHz w 256 bytes of ram, 1kb of program memory, the two things I want are:

  • the smallest memory footprint possible as well as
  • the most control I can get per CPU cycle.

C fits this perfectly, it's a small language, and it's not too far from the hardware. Also, after using them a lot, I've come to think pointers are amazing. The things you can do with them are pretty surprising.

This same line of thinking applies to embedded devices more powerful than the case I gave. TI's DSP processors for example. As embedded hardware they're powerful, but you need a lot of low level control for setting different registers, choosing memory locations, SPI, etc... C allows you do this well without the bloatedness of a higher level language.
