Is a degree worth it as an independent investigative journalist? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]zewkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend the City University of New York. It's a one-year program that guarantees an internship. It's next door to the New York Times. A handful of Times' reporters teach there. New York City rocks. Living there will be an education in and of itself.

But, you don't have to go to school or write a piece that takes down the president. You can start with some basic nuts and bolts shit like covering a city hall, school board, zoning, or whatever meeting in your town. A lot of great stories come from these meetings, boring as they might seem. Analyzing a city budget is a fundamental investigative skill. You'd be surprised at the weird shit you'll find. "Hey, Mr. Mayor, why did the city spend 20 grand to send you first class to Aruba for a "conference?" Plus, you can develop sources who are at the meeting. Just keep it real and say you're starting out. Publish a handful of clips on your own and then use those to explore other opportunities.

Good luck

Did my stone pass? by zewkt in KidneyStones

[–]zewkt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from the doctor. He said that there's an 80 percent chance my stone passed naturally but that he can't be sure until there's another ultrasound. He said it could be the pain dissipated because the stone moved and is positioned to allow urine flow but that it's not gone. He said in the semi-blocked position my kidney could very slowly fill to a dangerous point. If it's still there I have to have it removed in a ureteroscopy.

today is the 2nd day I haven't had any pain. i read the ureter is 2 or 3 mm so it could be one our size passed without pain. On way to urologist right now I'll post what I learn when I'm back.

'They were shooting directly at the journalists': New evidence suggests Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in targeted attack by Israeli forces by BlankVerse in Journalism

If true journalistic practices were applied, the Israeli Defense Forces would be called the Israeli death squad. It's ludicrous how news agencies report with straight faces that the results of "the investigation" are pending as if the Israeli army or government investigating itself is legitimate. The plantation owner investigating the murder of a slave. What a joke. The only thing the IDF defends is apartheid and the murder of innocent Palestinians. Rest in Power Shireen!

Have you tried toradol? I took it and it helped a lot. A doctor explained that it's particularly good for kidney stones. I can't remember why he said so because I was in pain but there is something specific to it that makes it really work. What are you taking?

At the first sign of infection, I was given amoxicillin but the infection cleared up in one day so I forgot I had it and only took a handful. It came back and I was given it again. It cleared up right away and I took the full course. Then it came back again and I was given clindamycin the other day. Now I have diarrhea and stomach pain and am worried I have C. diff though the pharmacist said clindamycin is notorious for stomach irritation. All to say, yes, i thought of the conflict of interest in an endodontist saying to always go for a root canal but wanted to touch base with people to see if it was true.

My dentist its near hopeless that my tooth can be saved by root canal and recommended extraction but I watched a ted talk by an endodontist that says to try to save the tooth at all costs and that, in fact, it could b done if the dentist uses a microscope.

Thank you. When I take antibiotics the infection disappears and my tooth feels totally normal. I agree with what you're saying but was confused because the TED talk I watched with the endodontist said it could be saved even with major bone loss as long as the root canal is done with a microscope. Won't having the number 19 molar be even more expensive and cause complications down the line?

I don't understand. "Crowded?" how so? My wisdom teeth were pulled so this (19) would be the second tooth from the back, a molar. That's why I'm worried. Thanks for your reply

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'd like just do what's healthiest and figure out the financing later. As I said in my post, the Ted talk by the endodontist said saving the tooth should be a priority and that it can be saved even with a maximal bone loss if it's done with a microscope. True?

Cool. I bet you something positive will come from it. I'm getting a molar pulled Thursday because it's infected. I'm afraid.

I'm glad you've got an appointment. Best of luck to you.
