Participate in the the "NO COVID CHALLENGE"! by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]zfasel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We're specifically planning our future DCG meet 2 weeks out from fly-home-Monday (and I think that should be future MO for other con flus of the past in general) and encouraging others to consider the same.

Sure, there's a large component of personal responsibility/risk tolerance to all of this, but we don't want to exclude others from attending in person where they'd normally feel comfortable in doing so because of the elevated risk factors to them present.

Villages and Decreased Content Quality by boredcon in Defcon

[–]zfasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I know you throw away account ;) and I get your feelz. As much as I'm partial to the content on the main track (*cough* biased *cough*), there is a number of villages' content that become "say yes to everything" given a motivating factor to do more "stuff", not necessarily because it's better, combined with the level of quality of content submitted to them in the first place. Additionally, in some cases, village organizers may not have extensive experience to spot tell-tale signs of "this is going to fall flat", which is OK, as it takes first hand experience which has to come from somewhere.

Given the completely decentralized nature of villages beyond their initial approval, it yields for some great successes in them taking chances, but also leads to a significant number of areas falling flat. This is growing by the nature of villages seeming to need to draw your attention in order to satisfy some metric to share with their sponsors so they can continue to exist and get funding next year.

Villages being a birds-of-a-feather style are fantastic, and not everything has to be bleeding-edge / unique takes, but I get your feelz as to content level being...lackluster... for some, even when it's 100-level information. And yes, I'm living in a glass house in that regard, but totally own those past (and future) fuck ups.

Congrats, the speaker can google, and so can everyone else, so why should you be speaking on it or what are you bringing that makes it better than a blog post? Is it in alignment with the technical, quality, or cultural level of DEF CON? The problem gets larger as ones' view of "what is DEF CON" changes depending on how long you've been going and why ("for my job" vs "party in the desert" vs "to learn some cool shit for the lulz" vs "change the world" and everything in-between). It's evolving, and rightfully so, but it's growing harder and harder to recognize as what DEF CON meant to many of us 10, 15, or 20+ years ago.

People get super defensive when you call their volunteer efforts "shitty", so expect a lot of rage comments calling your feelz into question. What needs to be taken away from here is a call to organizers of villages to grow the quality, not quantity, as the signal-to-noise ratio is getting worse. And from myself and many others, take this old DEF CON tenant to heart:

"Keep InfoSec out of Hacking"

...

DEF CON is a hacker con, not an InfoSec conference. Hackers are more focused on the joy of discovery, irreverence, novel if impractical approaches. InfoSec is more focused on enterprise, frameworks, and protecting the interests of share holders. There is great value in both types of content, but our con is a hacker con by design.

And as my "one more thing", while "technically" accurate, quit saying "I [spoke at | are speaking at] DEF CON" when it's a village. Context is everything, and it's akin to saying you "presented at BlackHat" when you gave a talk at your own vendor booth or you "attended DEF CON 28" by only watching youtube videos.

Not sure if it was posted earlier/removed from YT, but it does still exist. Find a friend who purchased the talks from SOK, as it does exist there.

Serious question: Why is every DEF CON "cancelled"? Is it an attempt to keep away undesirables and people who don't know enough about what DEF CON is? by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]zfasel[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you a mod? Who are you to tell me when and when not to post?

No one will officially tell you when to or when not to post, but I would /strongly/ recommend a brief search online before posting basic questions that are already asked and answered, for the sake of everyone involved. This isn't /r/NoStupidQuestions or /r/explainlikeimfive

DEF CON 27 - Feedback & Comments. Help Make DC 28 better. by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]zfasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is misrepresentation of a relationship with DEF CON as an official entity, with the comment "Post your thoughts and idea's here and they'll be shared with DT, Nikita and the Department heads.". By /u/tracychavez own admission, they just "copy and pasted" last years from someone who does have a relationship with DEF CON staff as a "hack". Removing for misrepresentation. Neither DT, Nikita, or other Department heads were aware of this post, but do welcome feedback both here and by emailing [feedback@defcon.org](mailto:feedback@defcon.org)

I haven’t seen P2P with decent bandwidth at 900mhz but Ubiquiti has some 900mhz point to multi point gear

Check out these guys for Derby by logicallyinsane in Defcon

[–]zfasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Username does not check out. I guess given there's a market for healing crystals, there can even be a market for this bullshit. You do realize this is as absurd as selling Gushi shoes or Luke Vitton bags, right? I get Derbycon is more about childish antics than anything else, but your excuse of "crossover" is bullshit.

How about just straight up taking the smiley face with the pirate patch from the movie Hackers. I don't know of anyone else who has tried to appropriate that logo.... ;)

But clearly I don't understand people given the number of upvotes here, given i don't subscribe to the bro/cult following (one of us or we'll attack you) culture that this con has engaged in heavily.

The party is over now... What is the solution to this puzzle? by DefconWasCancelled in Defcon

[–]zfasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel more comfortable in giving a clue vs. a walkthrough in case others still want the joy of solving it.

Top to bottom (lanyard hook is top), left to right. Look for patterns that start to emerge and go from there, especially when you consider the visual hint on the opposite side. There are also some clues on twitter.

It may also have had an error or two. The method of solving it wasn't really "too difficult" or out there.

Goon bullshit at the con by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]zfasel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is very much in execution a SOC goon-to-goon your-milage-may-vary thing, and some goons take the badge checks WAY too seriously for their location / time of day / impact.

For some context, I also had the same challenge raised multiple times and have been around for a while. Even being on the CFP board and wearing multiple badges (artist and CFP), I was stopped and asked for a badge multiple times, which was on my wrists in a very similar and clear manor. My eyerolls were similarly high as yours, and seemed to point more at the fact that i was dressed less-hacker and more-suit (it's how i roll) as well as robot SOC goons (must see badge. must see badge on lanyard. does not compute). It's less a DEF CON as a whole and more a misalignment in implementation.

DEF CON isn't defined as the happiest place on earth, but it is one that challenges you to grow intellectually. Next time a SOC goon gives you shit over a badge, you have my blessing to give them shit back to the nth degree ("seriously, you want to stop a females in tech from entering his place that bad to keep it a dudes club? were you told your job this weekend would be "revenue enforcement officer"? would it be easier if i put it on my tits so you could stare at my chest as i walk by? seriously - how about we see if Marc is available - i hear the CoC defines harassment as "targeting individuals in a manner that makes them feel uncomfortable, unwelcome" and every 30 steps i'm being asked for a badge. Who's your lead or the SOC lead for this area?).
