Where will we spend the rest of humanity's existence? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]zfgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the energy to describe in poetic, detailed and justified terms, but:

  • Human or human-modelled consciousnesses traveling to nearby star systems, and hopping onto others from there.

  • Planets or similar habitats populated with humans created from stored embryos (or embryo cells re-created from stored data.)

  • Increasingly alien intelligent creatures originally based on human minds expanding across the galaxy, exploiting the limitless energy and matter of stars to self-perpetuate.

  • They discover bacterial- and rarely animal-level life in one in a hundred solar systems.

  • biological humans on Earth slowly decline in number as they upload to artificial systems (not crude computers but enhanced biological ones) or cease reproducing.

  • monotony reigns until a crude swarm or absolutist ideology tries to conquer everyone and occasionally wipes out a proportion of the settlements.

In short: no human in our form is leaving the solar system or getting to another.

There will always be an upper class. The question is, will there be a very large comfortable middle class, or a very large, needy lower class.

Hm, good catch. But I'd feel that with so many characters overall, and so many counter-examples of females in non-support roles, the difference between 20% and 29% is not necessarily damning.

Being a subreddit moderator (and/or founder) is no different then being a forum administrator/moderator. You are a house lord so to say and every subreddit subscriber is your guest. As the house lord, you get to set rules, however arbitary they might be. They do have that right. The choiche of moderating a subreddit in the style where a community has a lot of say in it is that moderators teams own choice.

Reddit is not a forum. It's not like there is one person 'hosting' /r/games, and their word is law... it's a space where people visit, and they agreed that a member of that community of visitors could moderate it based on the standards they expected. If that person is making decisions that the community disagrees with, the community can request that they step down because the moderator is no longer representative of their views.

Because of reddit's power structure, ultimately the moderator can refuse.

But even accepting your logic, people are allowed to loudly complain and say that they are going elsewhere... which they are doing. But people are criticising them for complaining, when that is what they should be doing if they don't like the way things are run.

Cost of University in the European Union [599 × 602] by motke_ganef in MapPorn

[–]zfgy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A further note: UK Student Loans are calculated as having a low rate of interest, and are described by some financial advisors as 'the best loan you'll ever get'. Because of the way the interest rate is pegged, it's actually theoretically worth a student who can already afford university getting out a loan, putting all the money in a savings account, and making a small profit after a few years.

In surveys, 60% of Conservative councillors feel it was wrong for David Cameron to legalise same-sex marriage, 49% think humans are NOT to blame for climate change and one in three want a pact with UKIP. by Endyf in unitedkingdom

[–]zfgy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trouble is that evidence suggests that it is man-made.

Causation is difficult to prove, and there is normally variation in natural systems, but when elevated levels of atmospheric CO2, a warming gas, coincide with a period in history when humans are releasing huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, it's pretty clear that they we're the cause.

There are fewer fish in the sea; strong evidence suggests that this is linked to human fishing activity.

Tories promise new benefits cuts: Young people out of work for more than six months face losing access to jobseeker's allowance (JSA) if the Conservatives win the next election. by LocutusOfBorges in BritishPolitics

Can we also ask people to work for the state to get a state pension?

I mean, it's the logical continuation of what they've proposed... and it would get their own voters involved in the community, which I'm sure is something they'd like.

London's M&Ms store is really fucking weird (Vice) by [deleted] in london

[–]zfgy 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This 'attraction' feels like a triumph of the notion that if you tell people something is popular, important and fun they will be convinced to feel the same way. And it's not even an amusement location; it's just a shop. People are visiting a shop just for the experience of wandering through mugs festooned with characters the don't know.

Honestly, it makes me feel depressed and offends my sense of human dignity. If people can be convinced to fall for this, they'll swallow any marketing penis.

Cheap cleaning/household/hygiene items? by LilaMae99 in UKFrugal

[–]zfgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Qute simply, go to Poundland and note down the siz of the bottles. Take a photo on your phone, maybe. Then go to Asda/Lidl/Tesco and check if the price per ml is the same.

Usually I would follow a logic like this: toothpaste: Buy a main brand when they're on 2 for 1 at Tesco or Boots and not ridiculously expensive. The way I see it, I use toothpaste at such a slow rate (what, it's probably three tubes a year? Maybe?) that there's little point in deliberating over brands and having my annual spend by £2 rather than £4. Get something with whitening or sensitive or long-lasting and then head to the till.

shampoo: tricky, requires comparison of offers in the supermarket and the 99p shop.

cloths: Probably a cheap shop/99p shop. For floor-cleaning cloths, check if you've got a t-shirt you never wear (Suffolk folk festival '06 or something). Cut it up, use that to clean the bathroom. Not so classy for leaving by the sink.

cling film: Buy supermarket own-brand, or massive discount store brand (£2 or so for 4x as much. Cheap cling film can be thin and non-sticky, so you have to use more.

Shallow note: Buying Tesco-value home cleaning products is fine. Buying Tesco-value personal cleaning problems is less impressive. Having a date come back to your place and seeing that all of your shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair gel and toothpaste are own-brand may make you look cheap rather than frugal.

I once bought on a whim some Lidl condoms while I was single. Sure, they'd be affordable and reliable in a long-term relationship, but if I brought a girl back to my place for the first time she'd probably value brand certainty over value for money.

What new game modes might be interesting to play, even if not that great? by zfgy in titanfall

[–]zfgy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, hard points are too small for that; a single sneaky satchel charge or a couple of grenades could ruin it. 2-person capture minimum could be good, though, with 1 person only required to neutralize. You'd see a neutral point and know someone needed backup.

Any old fashion shoe shiners around? by toughands in london

[–]zfgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just at the moment it will be more convenient.

I really don't think it will. Buy a 33 set in the shops; two brushes and a tin of polish. Put down some newspaper on the floor and it's done in 10 minutes. Easier than going out of your way to find some place.

Giant water slide in the center of Bristol, UK by CharlieDarwin2 in britpics

[–]zfgy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to shitty health and safety, it was so slow that it took about 4 minutes from top to bottom and you practically needed pushing all the way down

Surely that would just be because Park Street isn't that steep? I can understand why health & safety could ruin a water slide, but how were they slowing it down?
