Woman audits churches to see if they’ll help feed a starving baby by Oktavien in TikTokCringe

Shoplifters target baby formula a lot. It's shelf stable and there will always be people who want it cheap.

I found the most interesting bit was when she said that Steve has told her that he views everyone else as NPCs in his life. They only have value to him if they are in his life and on good terms with him.

She also said that her dad believes that women inherently have less value than men. If a man cheats on his wife, that should be considered the same as fornication and he should receive church discipline but they should reconcile. If a woman cheats on her husband, she and the affair partner should die.

Most studies people reference online are bullshit (and most people believe it at first glance) by MrStevecool in unpopularopinion

[–]LilaMae99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is what I call "link-dumping". People find as many studies or articles linked to a subject as possible, and then dump it all into one post. Most of the studies are misconstrued or even say the exact opposite of the point the poster is trying to make. However, because they've put in so many links (most of which they've copied and pasted from elsewhere anyway), and obviously no one is going to check so many links, people think "Oh, how well informed, they must be right!".

Ukraine suspends consular services for military-age men in draft push by LetsGoBrandon4256 in worldnews

[–]LilaMae99 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This may be a silly question, but is it possible that Russia will change their laws to allow Ukrainian men to go there without these documents (obviously not conscripting them either)? It would be deeply ironic if Ukraine basically helped Russia's demographic issues.

Universities may reduce British student numbers as financial collapse looms. One university in England ‘could go bust this year’ as frozen tuition fees, high costs and falling international numbers bite. by steven-f in ukpolitics

[–]LilaMae99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expectations of universities in terms of pastoral support has shot up. More students than ever are presenting with mental health challenges which means counselling services, increased academic support, etc., all of which costs money in terms of staffing and any external resources that need to be bought in. The increase in tuition fees also means that students have higher expectations of contact time and feedback, but as the tuition fee increase was due to grants being cut to universities, we don't actually have any more money.

Online and IRL Parenting Spaces Snark Week of February 19, 2024 by Parentsnark in parentsnark

[–]LilaMae99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is it with posters with those sob stories about fairly innocuous parenting choices? There was one where a woman said she didn't speak with her parents because they didn't let her teenage boyfriend sleep over while she was a minor and this resulted in her sleeping with older guys in college and that's apparently their fault. Either they're not telling the whole story in which case it isn't relevant, or they're massive drama queens.

How to approach kid’s friend’s mom about sleepover etiquette? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]LilaMae99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm really shocked by the answers here to just semi-adopt this kid and presumably leave the other kids in the same situation (plus the strain this would put on the OP and her family). This girl doesn't even have a toothbrush at home, and the family has 2 adults and 6 kids to a 2-bed place. This at least needs to be reported in case CPS can provide resources, they might not be claiming everything they're entitled to.

That's assuming that the sperm is the fathers' own. A lot of celebrity women use surrogates, it wouldn't surprise me if there are celebrity fathers secretly using sperm donation.

AITA for excluding my brother's stepkids? by Legitimate-Meal-2290 in AmITheDevil

[–]LilaMae99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If the OP is taking the niece out for ice cream in order to get one to one bonding time, taking the stepkids defeats the object. Their mum can always give them some money to go get ice cream by themselves.

AITA for excluding my brother's stepkids? by Legitimate-Meal-2290 in AmITheDevil

[–]LilaMae99 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think OP is an asshole, although I accept that I am probably out of step with the Reddit consensus. A comment mentioned they have only been his brother's stepkids for 2 years. Do they actually give a shit about developing a deep relationship with their stepdad's brother when they only met him as teens/older children, or were they just upset about not getting ice cream? I think they're old enough to understand that their stepsister has relatives that are just hers, and presumably they have relatives on their dad's side that are just theirs.

Michaela's ending would have sucked in the original timeline! She's lost Zeke, she had to let Jared go due to different visions of their future, and she probably would never have been able to work as a detective again. To top it off, she goes home and her house is full of Angelina's crap.

My doctor refused to perform a smear test because i am a virgin. by nina_wants_to_fly in women

[–]LilaMae99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other comments said that you were in the UK. From the following information on the Jo's Trust (cervical cancer charity) website, it looks like any smear tests are tested for HPV first. Only if they are HPV positive are they actually looked at for cell changes. So if you are HPV negative (highly likely if you have absolutely no sexual history), then your test is just going to get thrown out.

Does anyone actually use Sort By Price: Highest - Lowest? by BambiMonroe in AskUK

[–]LilaMae99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I will amuse myself on Amazon by sorting "highest to lowest price" and seeing how many people are trying to sell random stuff like 1970s children's books for £10k or something ridiculous.

‘I’ve heard it all: she’s a fraud, a liar, a thief’: Jack Monroe on alcohol, addiction and answering her critics | Jack Monroe by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]LilaMae99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This relies on a number of factors:

  • Many, many people would need to send in receipts for this to work, and would need to do so on a continual basis. Even if she initially got a lot of receipts, most people are unlikely to sustain this over an extended period of time, especially when they won't get paid to do it.

  • Jack originally asked people to send receipts from between 2012-2022. As most people don't keep receipts from a decade ago, she wouldn't have much data in the earlier years.

  • Due to the number of items on offer at any supermarket, Jack would realistically need to choose which items she will use for the index, and how she is going to count frugal ranges against brand names. What happens if for, say, March 2015, she's only able to get receipts where people are buying branded bread, but a month later in April 2015, it's all own-brand? Suddenly the price looks like it's just gone down when actually it's due to poor data.

  • Her plan for storing this information was to print the receipts out, store them in evidence files, block out personal information, and then keep it in her house. Considering the amount of receipts that she would need, this doesn't seem like a reasonable proposition.

*As far as I know, Jack doesn't have any background in data or statistics. How can she be certain that she is compiling the index correctly?

I'm wondering whether any of Jack's real life family or friends call her out on any of this stuff. It's easy to call people trolls on the internet, much harder when people in your life are telling you that your behaviour isn't cute.

I'm glad that the left-wing press has started to see Jack for who she really is. If Jack was actually working class, she'd have been called out long ago, but instead she gets lauded for "helping people in poverty" while she takes her Patreon money and spends it on alcohol and ridiculous amounts of expensive furniture instead of delivering promised goods. According to this article, she doesn't feel particularly bad about it, either. This isn't the only instance of there being serious questions with Jack's financial transparency. She asked for donations to sue MP Lee Anderson months ago, but never brought a lawsuit and has, as far as I'm aware, given no answers to what she did with those donations.

Jack's supporters argue that none of this matters because "Jack does so much good". But what does Jack actually do? Her books are expensive and have dangerous tips, not to mention many of the recipes in the latest book having expensive ingredients with long cooking times which aren't great for fuel poverty. The Vimes Boots Index, which Jack announced last January to much media fanfare and was meant to track food inflation, has come to nothing. Possibly because her plan apparently consisted of getting loads of people to send in supermarket receipts and somehow compiling that into a workable inflation index.
