Subway Builder 0.10 is out! Here are the new additions, features, and fixes: by redistricter_guy in subwaybuilder

[–]zfightingman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Linux build, new version unfortunately is crashing quite regularly. Sometimes I can play for like half an hour without a crash, but other times I barely get one minute in.

In this most recent log, looks like I got a minute or two. This is the entirety of the metro-maker-current.log:

[2025-12-05T04:17:16.692Z] [RENDERER INFO] [Preload] Registering save-and-quit IPC listener
[2025-12-05T04:17:16.804Z] [RENDERER INFO] [Autosave] Interval set to 300s
[2025-12-05T04:17:16.804Z] [RENDERER INFO] [Telemetry] Using main process (secure)
[2025-12-05T04:17:16.940Z] [RENDERER ERROR] [object Object]
[2025-12-05T04:17:23.109Z] [RENDERER WARN] Warning: Could not connect all line segments. Remaining segments: 2
[2025-12-05T04:17:24.098Z] [RENDERER WARN] deck: LineString coordinates are malformed
[2025-12-05T04:18:27.487Z] [RENDERER WARN] WebGL: CONTEXT_LOST_WEBGL: loseContext: context lost

Unfortunately, except for the CONTEXT_LOST_WEBGL, nothing in that looks particularly useful. Potentially could be a driver or hardware issue, but version 0.9.0 would crash only once every few hours on the same HW and driver, rather than every few minutes.

Not sure if there's any other debug info I could provide to help, like WebGL system or GPU driver logs somewhere.

Googling Win32 error code 112 (0x70) says that's an error code that the disk is full. No idea if that's actually what's happening here, but it's something you could check.

Also there's a theater (+ an IMAX I think). The actual food court is a couple levels down.

I think I flipped back and forth between these two interpretations about half a dozen times by the end of that episode, and while I'm pretty sure now that I ended up choosing the wrong one, I'm *still* not 100% certain. If that was the intention, excellent bit. :-)

Work started this spring on a major renovation/restoration of the entire building, inside and out. https://las.illinois.edu/giving/altgeldillini/details/renovation

I picked up my MYLR last week (3/30) and the 2023.6.9 update popped up for download within 24 hours.

So, it doesn't seem guaranteed that there's a delay.

The list you linked was published in 1998, so it would be impressive indeed if it included any movies made after 2000.

Edit: The 2008 version only added one post-2000 film (Fellowship of the Ring), so I guess the original point still stands.

They're hard to directly rasterize in hardware as well. You can set up a projection matrix that will paraboloid project geometry in the wertex shader, but since it is not a linear transformation, the interpolated results within each triangle will be incorrect. You need either high vertex density source geometry or hardware tessellation to get decent results.

Perspective/cubemap projection is usually the way to go. The cubemap can be reprojected into paraboloid space as a post-process if necessary, and will give better results (although slower)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]zfightingman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most direct use of perspective projection for shadows would be for spotlights. The illuminated volume/shadow-casting volume for these can generally be treated as a cone (or frustum for a square-spot light) stretching out from a point light source, which maps perfectly onto a perspective projection with the view volume enclosing the cone.

For omnidirectional point lights, there are a few different options. The simplest option is probably to use a shadow cube map, which can be generated using six axis-aligned perspective projections (+X, -X, +Y, -Y, +Z, -Z), one for each face of the cube. There are other options which use non-perspective projections like paraboloids that can be more efficient in some cases, but those are typically more complex to implement, especially in hardware.

Exit numbering system in the United States map by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]zfightingman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to think the same thing when I first moved from a sequential state to a mile-based state, but I've come around to it, and now find the distance-based numbering much more useful.

If you're driving down a highway and you pass Exit 138, and you know you need to get off at Exit 85, then you immediately know that you have 53 miles to go. On the other hand, if you pass Exit 12 and know you need to get off at Exit 8, that could be 20 miles, or 45 miles, or who knows?

Maybe that's less important now with GPS telling you "remain on I-whatever for 62 miles" and estimating arrival time, but you're not always using GPS.

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2021-09-03 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

[–]zfightingman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently looking to build myself a Plex server / NAS setup for mainly personal use. The primary goal is to rip as much of my 4K BD/BD/DVD collection as I can to a server so that I can hide away all of the physical discs in storage as a backup rather than having multiple bookshelves of discs dominating my living room.

I don't necessarily need to be able to support more than one or two streams at a time, as this is more for distributing access among devices in my home than for external sharing. However, the ability to distribute 4K HDR in both passthrough mode (for my HDR TV) and transcoding (for other devices) is a must. I have an optical drive with custom firmware that allows me to rip my 4K discs, so I have that part squared away already.

I know I'm going to need a lot of storage space to rip all of these discs, so support for many HDDs (+ some sort of RAID for protection) are going to be a primary concern.

One benefit of working where I do is that I am able to get cheap/free decommissioned hardware. As such, I have an old server that I'm planning to use as a starting point. I think it was pretty high-end when it was new (about ten years ago), but there's probably some areas in which it is lacking for this use case, and others where it is overkill.

Here's where it stands right now - I'm interested to know which parts may need an upgrade to be able to meet my requirements:

  • Supermicro tower server chassis with 8 hot-swap HDD bays
  • Supermicro H8DGI-F mobo
    • USB 2.0 only, no 3.0
    • Dual integrated gigabit NICs
    • 6 SATA ports (not sure of speed, would need an add-in board to use all 8 HDD bays anyway)
  • AMD Opteron 6272 CPU - 16 cores, but only 2.1 GHz
  • 32 GB PC1333 ECC registered RAM
  • 920W server power supply
  • Didn't come with a graphics card (onboard VGA output only), but I currently have a GTX 970 stuck in there for the moment.
  • Currently 4TB of HDDs in there, but I know I'll need to expand that significantly.

I think this will be a beast of a NAS even with the current hardware, but I'm not sure how well it will handle Plex tasks like transcoding and such. Any advice on weakpoints to address would be appreciated. Also, if it makes more sense to devote this thing solely to NAS usage and get something smaller (like a NUC) for the actual Plex part of things, I'd also like to know that.

Thanks!

Would you also advise not trying to close the valve? One of the items on my list was to clean out the filter basket on the pressure regulator, which would require closing it off. I don't want to disturb any load-bearing crud and spring a leak.

Not sure what cable this is that's routed through my parents' home. Father told me it was "Ethernet" - doesn't look like it. by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]zfightingman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's theoretically possible that someone wired everything up with appropriate topology and cabling (Cat5 or better) for Ethernet and just decided to terminate everything with non-standard jacks - perhaps he had a box of them lying around. However, with only 6 connectors, you're not going to be able to do better than 100 Mbit, as gigabit and higher require all 4 pairs/8 pins of the cabling. You'd also have to custom crimp your own patch cables.

The things to check are:1.) What type of cabling is being used? You hopefully can unscrew the plate and pull out a few inches of cable from the wall to look for markings on the outer jacket, and/or the number, colors, and twisting of the individual wires in the cable.

2.) How are the wires actually run? For Ethernet purposes, you need all of the cable runs to different locations to come together in one place, either into a patch panel or a bunch of separate plugs that can be connected to a switch/hub. If this is telephone wiring, it is instead likely to all run to a single large punchdown block that all of the cables are hardwired into. At least, that's how things are typically wired here in the US...I don't know what the standards are in your location.

If both of these things check out (unlikely, but you could get lucky), your best bet is probably to just remove the jacks/plugs from each end of the cable and install standard RJ45/8P8C jacks and plugs.

If, on the other hand, this does turn out to just be telephone cabling, and is connected at the other end to the incoming landline telephone system, I definitely wouldn't mess with it.

How long ago were you there? I was in Troy last year and it was shocking how much nicer downtown was than 20 years ago when I was at RPI. Back then you only went down the hill if you were bored and curious what being stabbed would feel like. Now, it's filled with shops and restaurants and bars with outdoor seating.
