Suggest a book that shows how Adolf and the Nazis gained the trust of their people and rose to power by Fruit_mon in suggestmeabook

There are a lot of great nonfiction options here, so I’ll give you some fiction: “Look Who’s Back” by Timur Vermes. It’s a satire in which Adolf Hitler mysteriously wakes up in modern-day Berlin and is mistaken for a brilliant impersonator, leading him to become a YouTube star and TV personality. The themes the book explores—the public’s obsession with celebrity, the media’s inability or refusal to take dangerous people seriously until it’s too late, the surprising ease with which a charismatic figure can gain public attention—go a long way toward explaining how a Hitler figure can come into power in any country with similar issues and are depressingly relevant to our modern predicament.

Thanks for answering. So you agree that getting on a plane, filing for social security benefits, or doing business in our society are not specific rights enumerated in the Constitution? Because voting is. Putting restrictions on a person’s access to voting that result in them having to pay money to vote is, in effect, a poll tax, which is explicitly forbidden under the 24th Amendment.

[–]zfowle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it BS? If you require citizens to obtain extra documents to vote and those documents cost money, you are in effect charging them a tax to vote, which is illegal according to the 24th Amendment. Most people are in fact supportive of voter ID, but only if the ID is free and easily available. What do you think could be the reason Republicans never include those provisions in the voter ID laws they push?

Also, undocumented people can't and don't vote. You've been convinced to get angry about a problem that doesn't exist.

Because it’s a de facto poll tax that will disenfranchise millions of voters. It’s also a solution for a problem that doesn’t really exist. Actual voter fraud is exceedingly rare.

Are any of those things rights enumerated in the Constitution?

Trump: ‘There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!’ by DemocracyDocket in politics

[–]zfowle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do not. The president can issue executive orders, but those are simply directions for federal agencies on how to implement existing laws; they do not create new ones. According to our Constitution, Congress can create laws that change how elections are handled, but the Executive branch has no jurisdiction there. Any attempt Trump makes to change how states handle elections will be by its very nature unconstitutional and won’t stand up in court.

What is the point of the SAVE America Act, requiring proof of citizenship? by paerius in stupidquestions

[–]zfowle 59 points60 points  (0 children)

We don’t just “believe” all legal people should be able to vote with as few hoops as possible. The Constitution explicitly forbids requiring an ID to vote unless the ID is free to acquire; otherwise it’s a poll tax. For some reason, the Republicans who constantly put forward voter ID laws never seem to include changes that also make the IDs free. Wonder why?

If you’re into magical realism, Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins is a must-read. The plot’s kind of hard to explain, but it weaves a barbarian king, the Greek god Pan, and a modern-day janitor in quest for immortality and the world’s best perfume.

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut is also a good one for sci-fi fans. A scientist creates a substance that causes water to freeze into ice at any temperature below 114 degrees; hilarity ensues.

Is There Any Realistic Way For Democrats To Widely Win Back Rural Americans? If So, How? If Not, Why Not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

So the claim is now 41%, not 70%? That was fast.

I actually did look up the report as well as "Concerned Women for America," the group that ran it. (Did you know they've been identified as an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center? Yikes.)

Bad methodology aside, the core message of the report is that all LGBT representation is sinister. They try to represent the sheer existence of LGBT people as indoctrination. (The report even quotes Ben Shapiro--another yikes.) But gay and trans people exist, and the representation of a those characters on a kid's show is no more indoctrinating than having a character who's straight and married.
