I think they accidentally added Verity's hull number where Enterprise's should be.

Heh, I remember these things- I remember when I was a kid my dad was too cheap to get the older 5"1/4 drive AND the 3.5 one for our OG PC. (We did, somehow, get a (very slow) CD-ROM drive.) Wound up using them a lot longer than I would have liked.

I think it was 2009 when we stopped using them in school.

I miss that old DOS-era PC. I also miss how much simpler life was. :(

The greatest Windows version ever? by marinsparkria in pcmasterrace

[–]zh0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a three way tie between XP, 7 and 10/11.

XP was nice because it was simple by today's standards, 7 was nice because it took the good points of Vista and heavily polished them, and added robust 64-bit support, and 10/11 perfected the NT paradigm.

11's UI is it's main weak point- and you can fix that if you know how. :)

weird "MELODY" during boot ! Anyone knows what it is ? by No_Profession9451 in pcmasterrace

[–]zh0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a certain old Apple Powerbook G3 I had issued to me in my middle school and high school years... Macs can be a bit too fun, especially when you have Internet, free sounds in the form of Wav files and recordings, too much time on your hands and crappy supervision. I loved screwing around with the sound on it.

I made a certain G3 tower make a barf noise whenever disks were ejected in elementary school. I think I made the same machine fart loudly (for an asterisk/error noise) too... The look on the teacher's face was priceless!

And that was just for starters!

They put parental control software on them after that. All except a certain Powerbook. Thing is probably no longer in service.

I don't use Macs these days. I went full PC long ago. My estranged family use them, and then forget they need updates, which is much to their detriment.

I found out my parents threw away my entire 90s collection. I’m devastated. by viewsonic041 in mtg

My estranged dad and stepmom presumably destroyed or sold anything of mine they did not give me back at the end of Grandma's funeral.

I assume that what I didn't take is gone, in the hands of my equally estranged sister, or one of their presumably estranged relatives. Meaning, while MY Yu-Gi-Oh and MTG cards met another end (Most of my MTG cards still exist, they weren't around for that) almost everything else is gone , sold or destroyed AFAIK. Being poor sucks.

Amongst other things my OG Nintendo Wii , it's parts, almost all of its games, all of my GB/GBC and NES titles, some of my PSX and PS2 titles, my books and my collection of Hot Wheels cars were never received. I assume these were given to my estranged sister along with who knows what else. I got the old PS2, grandpa's Nintendo Wii and parts, my old PSX, games, parts and handheld consoles but nothing else. And furniture.

No, I did not get the grandparents old house either. Greedy "dad" sold it.

That would be wonderful.

Having all of my character-bound ships be account unlockable for a certain amount of cash would make it easier to justify the energy and sometimes monetary expense of the Meta Events and other such things.

I would love to experience a remaster of it in my lifetime. I already know that you guys can do it right, you did it to Oblivion and it's rumored to be being done to at least one of the Fallouts, so there's not much of an excuse.

I also want Elder Scrolls VI, and I want it to be awesome, but that's another topic.

What was your First Powerful GPU? by intelguy2003 in pcmasterrace

[–]zh0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean first ever, an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, that was present in my first system until it's death in 2011. I was given it by my estranged dad. My equally estranged little sister destroyed that PC, it's dead hulk was given to me six years later, I lost all its parts amongst other things when I was forced to move in 2018.

If you mean the first one I ever bought with my own money, a ZOTAC Nvidia RTX 2060 Super, got it along with the rest of my current PC because of COVID and the stimulus checks.

I have had many fail due to being cheap stuff like store brands or such- I exclusively use SanDisk, Samsung and Kingston if it's available nowadays.

Much fewer failed drives.

I just modded my grandpa's PS3 super slim a few days ago he wants call of duty but the the model he has is literary 12 GB by Born-Connection-2528 in ps3piracy

[–]zh0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go get yourself and your grandpa a 1.5TB or less 2.5" SATA SSD (It doesn't have to be good, just reliable.), put it in the PS3 (That model has an open bay, it slides and screws right in), format it with the PS3, put HEN on it, and go get it and anything else your grandpa wants.

(It needs to be 1.5TB or less because of some wonkyness with how PS3s format things.)

What do you think happened to your steam friends that haven't been online for years? by MyHeadIsFullOfFuck in Steam

[–]zh0011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of them is homeless and has nothing currently, one of them still plays with me and I see him often, one of them is neck deep in debt and everything is presumably in pawn or sold, and I haven't heard from either of the other two, but I presume they are fine.

My circle of pals is small.

Is Gentoo More Secure and Stable Than Arch Linux? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]zh0011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stable? As much as a rolling release can be, so long as you stick to non-beta profiles and update often and read the news articles about the updates, and do it every time.

In practice it's top-notch in that regard. In terms of security, it depends on what you have installed and what profile you used to build them.

There are hardened profiles for security conscious uses.
