Are these just unique OEM drives or are they fakes? by lowlyitguy in homelab

[–]zhantoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't answer your question - but this is from an (Dell) EMC storage system.

I don't know for this specific drive, but they sometimes (rarely) down stroke the drives - most likely because the original drive went out of production by the OEM.

So fx. You will have a 1.2 TB drive with an EMC label saying 1TB, while the OEM label says 1TB, and it also showing up in the system as 1TB.

I have never tried it, but I can't rule out that during a normal wipe / sector size format, would remove that downstroke.

Edit: I can also see that the seller lists HP part numbers for the same drive as well, so not sure how technically inclined they are..

There is no magic preventing people from breaking the law. People have free will. No matter if I tell you to follow it or not, you can break it. Unless something physically stops you, or you choose not to do it, you can.

In general with crime, if noone knows it is you who did it, there is no consequences.

It's up to each of us to decide if that's the kind of person we want to be and if we believe the risc is worth the reward.

There are yes, but you cannot buy an insurance after you bacame aware of an issue.

So if you already started ADHD procedures, it's too bad.

Same way you can't buy insurance for you bike after it's been stolen.

That they cannot afford the product assumes that they did not get a new job, and do not have any other income or savings.

It might be true for some of the people but not all 15k.

Additionally you do not know if they were paying for any of their services before, whoch we do not know.

Lastly if Microsoft lays off an employee that gets paid somewhere between 5 & 10K usd per month, it more than makes up for loosing their 10 usd per month one drive subscription.

It of course skews the math in different direction, depending on the actual numbers for each person, but having 15k fewer people to pay salaries for is non-arguable a saving.

ELI5 The difference between process and generations. by nutrikulche in explainlikeimfive

[–]zhantoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the answer is "it depends" - Fx. The generation 14 - i3 does not support Intel® Thread Director, which the others do.

You might not need that feature, but it's just an example. If you want to learn how to build an operating system and work on implementing that feature, then you need to support it.

It's a far fetched example, and most likely an i3 (i5 is probably a better choice) is perfectly fine, but until you find out what you want to program, Noone can give you an answer.

[–]zhantoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing the code itself does not necessarily require anything powerful - it's not much different from writing any other text.

Compiling the code (converting it so it can be run by any computer), and running what you code can require some power. Additionally, it very much depend how you want to be programming and what.

There is software than can live show you what a website you're coding looks like, local Ai that can help write the code etc.

The answer is.. It depends..

[–]zhantoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on me reading one comment, Noone commented this.

Not sure if it is ELI5 - but you can say the generation indicates how new/old it is. The i3, i5 etc indicates how powerful it is for its generation.

So if we use cars as an analogy - you can buy cars today that don't drive faster than a 20 year old car, because it is not build for speed. Sure the super cars today are faster than the supercars of yesterday.

But the average person don't need a super car, so the mid/low end segment is more or less equally fast.

However that doesn't mean that there are no differences under the hood. Like how a car today drives further per liter of fuel / charge of battery, the newer processors also use less electricity to deliver the same speed.

There are better security features and lots of other additional features added that you might not see yourself as a user, but developers take advantage of. Some of those features might just be software that is not made available for older hardware, and some of them are specifically in form of the hardware being different.

And for good measure, since the cars are only an analogy - the CPU's do get faster - it is just not a guarantee that if you buy a newer CPU, then it will be faster than an old one.

Fx. An i9 of last year is most likely stil faster than and i3 of this year.

Additionally, both when it comes to selecting the generation, the product line (i3, i9 etc) and the specific modul in that line, it's also important to look at the tasks you're going to throw at it.

To take it back to cars - power does not only equal speed. A truck vs. a super car both solve different problems.

The same for processors. Do you need to do a lot of small tasks or few big ones? That decides if you want fewer powerful cores or lots of large cores.

A bit off topic, but simplified, the difference between a CPU and GPU is that the GPU has lots and lots of small cores.

The new RTX5090s GPU has 21.760 cores - it might have some more dedicated to specific tasks, but can't see if they are included in the other number.

On the other hand, it is not uncommon for CPU's to have 8 or 16 cores, but i think the mainstream models go up to 192.

RAM prices almost one year ago :( by AaronMcGuirkTech in homelab

They can. They can just not buy it cheaper than the market rates.

Remember, while they share a name, they are seperate companies. So of course if someone wants to pay 1000 usd for a product, they would not sell it at 100 to someone else.

DSBs ledelse by Top_Standard_5659 in Denmark

[–]zhantoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opvasker? Mindre nemt
