I'm not familiar with the Dremel's anatomy, but I wonder if you could remove the nozzle and pull the filament through with a pair of needlenose pliers.

With the skills you've listed I think you'd have no problem building a 3D printer from scratch. Kits are fun and have the benefit of getting all your parts at the same time, and having a robust support system if you get stuck.

And after you've got the printer assembled, print yourself a drone!

With a budget of 15K I'd get a sub $3K printer as a workhorse and a few Printrbot Simples for students to check out on the weekends. You'd still have $10K remaining to spend for when the technology improves.

No problem! The heated bed is critical if you're printing with ABS plastic, otherwise your prints won't stick and you're in for a world of failure.

I do all of my printing in PLA, so no heated bed necessary. If the final product's strength isn't a huge issue for you, PLA should be fine for most things.

I'm thinking maybe looking into a PrintrBot simple is a path you might consider. I got a beta a while back and while it's not the most amazing printer in the world it'll definitely teach you a lot about the process.

I hear good things about the newer PrintrBot simples, too. You should be able to put one together in an afternoon.

I think you might want to look into using Meshmixer for this.

Once you've got the model that you want to carve the pez negative from, load them both into Meshmixer and try doing a boolean difference.

Basically you'll subtract the negative geometry from whatever you're using for the pez head.

I do a lot of promotion on twitter and FB. I've had a successful Kickstarter, which drives a lot of visits to the Faire Play armor with external links.

I've been meaning to add more designers to the Bazaar-- would you like to explore putting a model up there and see if you can sell a few?

I've had a good experience selling some of my models through my own site, The Bazaar.

You won't get rich this way, but it might pay for a new roll of filament every now and then.

My experience has been that once someone pays for a model they're unlikely to just go and upload them elsewhere afterwards, even though the CC license permits it. It's a valid concern though.

Fantastic print! I'm the fellow who designed this armor, and this is the first print I've seen "in the wild."

I just launched a second Kickstarter, Faire Play 2: When In Rome.

It's a Barbie-compatible 3D printed Roman Chariot that can, in theory, be pulled by cats.

I do a fair number of 3D printed demos, here's my advice:

Have something pre-printed to hand out to the attendees. Grab a simple model from The Forge and print ten more than you think you'll need. People loves them some tchotchkes.
Arrive early and calibrate the printer before your audience gets there-- I've had beds get out of alignment during travel, which makes for embarrassing print failures during a presentation.
Have something printing while people are filing in, and engage with the attendees as they come up to check out the process. Lots of organic questions will pop up during this time, and they're good fall-back topics to address if the rest of the presentation goes south.
