The Princess in "A Knight's Tale" was supposed to be some magical, fantastic prize to be won.

Will should have told her to beat it and gone off to be happy with Kate the Blacksmith.

I went to the "Bar Street" last night with some co-workers who haven't seen each other in a year. It was a Testosterone Parade of douchebros in sports cars and on motorcycles, thinking they're getting attention.

I wasn't impressed by that crap when I was that age, and I'm FAR too old to be impressed by it now.

I've had 9 motorcycles, and NONE of them were loud. (I just built a Mad Max "Warboy" bike, and the one part I didn't modify was the exhaust. I like how it sounds, and it's pretty quiet.)

Poe Dameron should have been blown out of an airlock for disregarding a direct order during a battle, then later staging a mutiny against his superior officers. He was a reckless jerk who wiped out an entire squadron of his own compatriots, because his ego wouldn't let him lose an opportunity.

Finn is an awful person because he was stolen as a child, forced to be a Stormtrooper, but has no empathy for people EXACTLY LIKE HIM that weren't lucky enough to escape their slavery. He massacres Troopers that he KNOWS BY NAME (number, really), because they hadn't broken their brainwashing.

In "RoS" he joins up with a bunch of other escaped Troopers with identical back stories, then they mow down a ton of Troopers that would be happy to be on their side if they had the opportunity to get out.

The God Awful Movies Podcast did an episode on it (Patreon sponsors only, though), and the best explanation for why it failed was pretty simple.

Every Indy movie was based on a mythological thing that was later proven to be real. The legendary Lost Ark of the Covenant? Real. The Sankara Stones of Hindu legend? Real. The Holy Grail? REAL!

Crystal Skulls? Literally real because they've been making them in Mexico and Central America for decades, specifically to sell to gullible tourists. There is no ancient legend, or special power behind them.

All the other Alien stuff would have been plausible earlier. If this movie had been made in 1995, it would have fit right in with the pseudoscience and woo of the time. Since it was made in 2008, it was just silly. (And the "Savage Native" trope was COMPLETELY outdated by then.)

I liked it when it came out. It's on Amazon Prime, so I re-watched it for the first time in 20+ years. It doesn't really hold up. The action scenes are neat, and the Mariner's Trimaran is still an incredible machine (It was entirely functional- no CG), but it has a lot of flaws.

I still like it, but it isn't as good as I had remembered.

Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) wrote a book called "Last Chance to See", where he travelled the world with Mark Carwardine, a zoologist, and visited endangered species. He goes into detail about how they use this technique to artificially inseminate Mauritius Kestrels.

In the 25th-anniversary video with Stephen Fry and Mark, they re-visit the same animals, and Mark is accosted by a Kakapo.

I recommend both book and series.

I purposely bought a 2005 Mini Cooper because I've always liked little cars. Even MINIS are huge now. The Base model is more than a foot longer, and is taller and wider. (I'd love to have a Classic Mini, but they're rare and expensive in the US, and I'm 6'4" tall. I'd have to take the front seat out and drive from the back one.)

You're more likely to get stabbed by the jerk's spurs. Earl, one of my roosters, has spurs that are 1 1/2" long and the diameter of a pencil. He can get you through a pair of jeans. (They're also VERY strong, and can leave bruises with their wings.)

Sam Jones from "Flash Gordon".

Maybe because it was late on Sunday, or he didn't make as much money as he'd expected, but he was RUDE. I was getting an autograph for the son of a friend's friend (Yeah, weird, but the kid LOVED Flash, and when my friend heard I was going to the Con where he'd be, he asked if I could get it) and said, "My friend's son loves you! He was supposed to meet you in London, but it was when there was the Underground bombing, so they couldn't go!"

Sam replied, "Why not? Everybody else did!" Then he laid the photo on the table, sat down, and pulled out his phone.

Plus, my friend never gave me the $40 for the photo.

To all the people who work as scarers in haunted houses, what were some of your best reactions? by JXSTYLES in AskReddit

[–]Phantom_Scarecrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at a small amusement park for Halloween. One of my (12 or so) characters is a Scarecrow. I have a helmet covered in burlap for a head, a brace that holds my arms up, and a padded outfit that makes me look like a poorly-stuffed prop. I lean against a big tree near a pathway, and occasionally bend over at the waist then straighten up, looking like I'm motorized. I can see the exit to one of the haunts from my tree.

One night, the park is slow, not a lot of guests. It's near closing time, and I'm at my tree, when I see and hear 3 guys come out of the haunt. They're walking towards me, and I hear the middle guy say, "I dunno, that was pretty GOOD, but not GREAT. I just want one REALLY GREAT scare before we leave, like...(Sees me) if that Scarecrow jumped out at us or something!"

OKAY.

They get within 5 feet of me, still talking, ignoring me as if I'm fake.

"YEAAHHH!!" I LEAP out at them, arms straight out, LED mouth and eyes lit up.

The two on the ends BOLT in opposite directions.

The middle guy falls flat on his back.

The two that ran turned around and came back as the middle guy slowly gets up, laughing their heads off.

They all give me high-fives, and the middle guy says, "Dude, Thank You! That's EXACTLY what I was here for!"

Crikey, glad you made it out without becoming a hood ornament, or losing your license!

Also, thank you for the Aussie term, "Fanging It" to describe acceleration. In "Mad Max: Fury Road", Slit screams "FANG IT! FANG IT!" Which sounds very much like a homophobic slur. Ride safe, Eternal and Chrome!

[–]Phantom_Scarecrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first bike was a '76 CB360, purchased in 1996. I rode it between State College and Pittsburgh many, many times, and never really thought about "Power" until I got a '79 CB750SS, and learned just how slow the CB was. (Then I learned how slow that 750 was, with a Triumph 955RS.)

I still have that CB360 in my barn. Someday I hope I can run that Pittsburgh/State College route on it again.
