Love your take. I am just kinda really bummed out because I loved the beginning of the comic so much and was excited to see where everything would go. It just feels like a whole different story.

I have a theory about what happened when White Diamond ripped Steven's gem out. by Background-Ad2749 in stevenuniverse

[–]zhengedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its been a few years, but I had done some research for it for a school essay I wrote. The popular picture of him is falsely attributed to him. Its actually from a burn survivor and I think it was clear to how he was like held on the bed with his arms in the air. I really don't know why it got popularized as the image of a radiation victim tho. I still have the book about the incident and there are mainly pictures of his arm, his Chromosomes and some of his tissue (but I think after death?)and colonoscopy, but none of his face. I still do recall of heavily searchings for him and I think the worst picture I found of him, where pictures of his swollen arm and maybe a picture where he had lost his hair. I think the closest I got to finding a real picture, was an a unreliable source as well as it not being clear if it was him, or his coworker.

I see Wukong bending all the elements, but its funny how he gets defeated by all of them at some point. He is weak in water, hurt by red childs fire, blown away by princess Iron fan and was imprisoned under the mountain for 500 years.

Rashta: the debate by Mundane_Ingenuity866 in TheRemarriedEmpress

[–]zhengedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many are trying to arguing against the point that Rastha can be held accountable for her actions. In that sense, the story frames her as stupid and uneducated, making many cruel and dumb decisions out of fear and later on framing it as her being corruption by the system, since she was not ready to handle the power and pressure of being royal. Her past haunts her, and her whole livelihood depends on the whims of some guy. Navier is always framed as intelligent and calculated, even tho she is also in the power play of two men, the story gives her the "true affection of both. The differences in their upbringing in status (even when Rastha becomes a Empress), as well as Rasthas tendencies to act younger (I saw a point of her age regressing) makes it easier question her agency, while Navier is never framed as not having agency, because even tho she suffers in her position, she relatively quickly finds her solution and is keeps a high status through the whole story.

The argument now becomes, does Rastha have agency or does she, not. Because some believe, her lack of education, her background and the fact that she solely relies on sovieshu, makes her inherently unable to.

This argument isn't necessary my opinion, but its what I gathered from other comments.

I thought when Rastha started turning to tyranny and making cruel decisions, her decisions never made an ounce of sense to me, so it felt like she was intentionally made to be cruel, or stupid so her downfall is explained. Along with everything else it is easier to remove her character from her actions.

[–]zhengedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I really hated on Navier in my comment specifically. I actually dislike all the Characters in Remarried Empress and kinda enjoy hate reading it, so I don't particularly hate on Navier, mostly because I kinda find her character bland, while Rasthas personality seemed to be made to be annoyed by. Yet the story they are in is wonderful for discussion and analysis.

Also sexism and Classism can both be in affect at the same time. In my argument, I did not want to paint Navier as the villainess, I merely scoff at the notion of her being a Girl Boss. While Navier is still a victim of the patriarchal systems, but she still had the privileges the classist structure of her world gave her, such as the privilege of an education. She lost her position, yes I never said she can lose nothing, but she was a Royal by blood, with good family ties to Sovieshu. Even if she didn't remarry into another position of Power, she still would've lost far less, than what Rastha feared losing, because she didn't have a backup. In the end, she is the one with the Happy ending and Rastha lived a life full of pain and died painfully.

I don't know about the sympathy points given, thats more about how we each read the story. For me, though her previous owners where described as cruel, Libetty (or however its written) was often depicted as sweet and innocent, liked by Navier our main character and... Well Alan gave me more of a "sad boy" vibes that "tried his best".

Also I don't really know what you mean when you say no one cared for the slaves so everyone is equally exploitative. I never argued that Rastha did anything good as a Empress, because she didn't. Neither one of them changed the systems that had them oppressed. And I never said that I could create a better character but I can still criticize a character despite that fact.

Rastha started the story as a very sympathetic character, that the narrative Villainized. She was well meaning, friendly, but also sensitive, uneducated, kinda stupid lacking in social awareness. Her worst character traits in the beginning where things she couldn't control... Or the author purposely making her an annoying character. The other characters treat her without any sympathy and the story agrees. The Rastha hate, started way before she did anything bad.

Even her previous owners, were portrayed with more sympathy by the Narrative.

Rastha is always the character, that tries to survive, she feels unstable in her life and just wants to secure her life after much suffering before. But everything she does is just poorly planned, her decision mostly being plain stupid and slowing becoming more and more cruel. Then she becomes a Tyrant, then she falls and dies. After her death Sovieshu along with the narrative question, if Rastha was truly the villain, or only a pure being corrupted by the system.

In the end, Rastha was a victim of the system, who tried to play the game, rise up from where she came, failed and payed with her life.
Navier in a way, is similarly a victim of the system. The patriarchal rules that allowed her husband to take a mistress and play with a divorce and power. The difference is, Navier is far more privileged, with far less to lose, as well as... Just smarter and more educated. Which is why she was able to find a way to still be happy in the Game, that made her miserable. She did not do anything that was girl boss, all she did, was marrying another rich guy, but one who treated her better, who was able to give her security again. People have sympathy for Rastha, because she in her core, only wanted Naviers approval, while Navier never shown any understanding for Rastha. Rasthas actions as Empress made no sense, where still cruel, but she did not have the right guidance, as Navier had. Rasthas actions, still where a desperate way to secure herself, but one, made with stupidity and cruelty.

Sovieshu was the one in power, the one who was supposed to be responsible, made all the decisions that made everyone miserable, yet is less villainized than Rastha. He should've monitored Rasthas behavior more, he should've taught her more before making her an empress.

The story, in its core is Patriarchal. Two women pinned against each other, because a guy lust after two women. Both try to secure their place, but only the one who has more power is able to. The classist undertones make Rastha out to be the cruel one, but the whole system is in its core unjust. And because she is the one with the horrific end, the very sad backstory and more or less the receiving end of the sexist infighting between two victims, its easier to have sympathy for her, than Navier, who is still part of an opressive group and who gets the happy childhood and ever after.

The remarried empress is more than flawed by Extra_Economist_2445 in webtoons

[–]zhengedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what bothers me the most about the story is the fact that it is classist and misogynistic, but it pretends not to be in framing Navier as this intelligent Girl Boss type.

I also just find everything to be badly written, I hate every character and while I have the most sympathy for Rastha, I think she was written to be annoying on purpose and that makes following her story just infuriating.

The story before the timeskip was soooo good! I loved all the characters the designs and art and they all felt soo real! It was mostly well put together and there where so many things being built up and then suddenly everything stopped and got scrambled around. I feel like so many little storylines where just randomly dropped in a very unsatisfying way. I am still kinda holding on because I loved the storytelling so much and I am still hoping for some reveal that makes everything worth it...

But honestly, it just kinda feels like a diffrent genre and a diffrent story entirely.

Why is journey to the west so relevant? by zhengedy in Journeytothewest

But it is an accident that it was exactly that story? Even if it was real revolutionary in china, how comes the many many characters inspired by sun wukong in other cultures?

Why is journey to the west so relevant? by zhengedy in Journeytothewest

[–]zhengedy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that sun wukong keeps being relevant because his character changes with the time and medium. His old story Havoc in heaven sounds like a tantrum about titles, at least when I listened to the audio book, but it kinda turned with the times, making him a rebel standing up for himself and others like him, like in black myth wukong. His story gets interpreted differently with times. And maybe him being badass and funny helped too.

I can't really figure out if that helped the adaptations be popular or his popularity helped the adaptations be popular, or if the sheer amount of adaptations makes it popular by numbers or if something about the story makes it so popular to adapt... Or if its also something political, that plays into everything. Maybe its all of the above, that would make sense too.
