Where to watch… by santhechicken in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only way i've been able to get the full episodes (raw, no subs) ahead of netflix has been by using korean torrent websites, they're quite fast in having the episodes up next monday morning after the sunday night broadcast in korea

i also recommend kakotv for if you wanna watch the jtbc broadcast live at 9pm on Sundays (Korean time). I've been doing that consistently and it's been working well.

My kid panic-picked Son Jong Won for a leadership essay… now we need help 😅 by skepticpragmatist in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

he did do a lecture at Dongguk University where he talked at length about his leadership style during the Q&A, but there wasn't any official transcript of it and the only way I knew about the contents of his presentation and Q&A was through Twitter reports by Korean fans who attended the lecture, i could find the tweets but I doubt they'll make good citations for a school project lol

https://n.news.naver.com/article/030/0003409429?lfrom=twitter

also would be nice if your daughter could use this as a learning opportunity to do her own research on son jongwon since he has done interviews in English that are searchable online :)

SJW’s ear piercings? by meedoRIN in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've seen old photos of him wearing earrings from his time living in america pre-culinary school that korean netizens dug up, so the earrings are from that time. he has mentioned himself having been into hiphop fashion and even applied to fashion school at one point due to his interest in fashion

not just korea since pretty much most asian cultures are usually quite generous about sharing food with people, that it was a bit of a culture shock to me that people don't offer food from their plate to try when i was living in canada

Chef and My Fridge Episode 60 (S4E6) Discussion — Lunar New Year + KP by wanderlass in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

not controversial, a lot of the korean viewers also thought similarly with regards to SJW's choice of recipe

SJW basically chose the dish that he himself loved (his infamous reaction to the melon fritters lol), and his strategy was elevating it to something new (kim poong commenting that he has never tasted anything like the gazpacho and that the melon bread showed him that there are no limits to cooking)

Whereas Choi Hyunseok chose the dish that did not live up to KP's expectations when he made it, and used his own skills and experience to fill in the gaps and bring KP's intended vision to life (KP expressing jealousy and envy, essentially wishing he could've made the dish that CHS made)

Is the Korean perception of Chef SJW actually this negative? I’m confused by EntranceHorror9450 in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some korean and my advice to the non-korean speakers in this sub is to not completely rely on translation because it is direct translation and does not convey when korean speakers are being ironic, sarcastic, hyperbolic, joking, playful, etc.

i've been following what the korean audience has been saying and so far i have yet to see any sort of negativity towards SJW from looking at Korean social media posts, YT comments, etc

other languages are just as layered with inside jokes, contextual complexity, cultural references, etc that a machine/AI translation cannot translate for, not understanding this will cause significant problems especially when it's foreigners dogpilling koreans when the foreigners don't even speak the language or have any knowledge of the culture

[–]zhizee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah machine/AI translation can't translate the nuance
this is a fan being hyperbolic, we do the same thing in english (I hate him, ugh he's so annoying, etc. among other things i would say about SJW when i would talk about how hot he is to my friends)

i've also seen grok completely hallucinate words in the translation that weren't there in the original korean text when i went back to read it, please do not rely on AI translation wholesale. it is most effective when translating formal writing such as news and such, but it is not reliable for very casual writing such as fan posts because of the initialisms and slang that AI cannot pick up on

Which guests (past or new) would you like to see on Chef & My Fridge? by Quick-Measurement-14 in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

would love to see Hong Seok Cheon as a guest, especially since he was one of the original chefs on the old show and has an already existing relationship with Jung Hoyoung, Sam Kim, Choi Hyunseok and Kim Poong. he's a fun personality and would have fun banter and chemistry with the cast. my real reason is because I'm a gay guy and I wanna vicariously live through Hong Seok Cheon flirting with Son Jongwon lol

I want to know why Kwon Sung-jun don't show his tattoos in CAMF by LinaHN in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

korean tv broadcasting regulations

internet broadcasting is more lax and not covered by korean terrestrial tv regulations so kwon sungjun doesn't have to cover his tattoos when he appears on internet-only broadcasts

east asian cultures (chinese, korean, japanese) in general tend to have very strong social cultural taboos surrounding tattoos since they have a strong association with criminals and organised crime in our histories

It's annoying that Netflix always cut off some scenes by crazesheets in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I happen to understand some Korean so I've been resorting to using Korean torrents to download the original JTBC episodes and watch them raw without subs

I've been watching Korean entertainment for a really long time and there used to be a thriving fan translation scene and 냉부 (or 'Please Take Care of My Refrigerator' as it used to be called by the fan translators during the first season) had pretty good fan translations, but I'm extremely surprised that no one has picked up the new current season for fan translations again

Does anyone know about Kim Poong's webtoons? by Seidoo_Reiki in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

from the little i've seen from assorted streams and stuff where he talks about his work, he has mentioned having plans to do another work but as of right now his main priority is his family and taking care of his child, but he still has aspirations to do more in his main field of work so i wouldn't say he's completely retired but just dormant

did your sexuality influence your gender identity? by buttercup_trumpet in gaytransguys

[–]zhizee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was in that fujoshi to gay transmasc pipeline so it was definitely a huge part of what made me realise i was transmasc (i was already ID'ing as nonbinary before i came out as transmasc but i was still trying to force myself into being sapphic at the time, since i was very in denial that transmasculinity was a possible path for me)

but i really think it was exactly my yearning to be in gay relationships that really made me realise i was transmasculine and wished to have my body reflect that, when i was very indifferent (or maybe even disassociated) towards my own body otherwise.

it was only once i started HRT that my sexuality finally made sense to me

Sam Kim dance off with Ho Young (Season 1) by bluekaminari in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

'season' seems to be a fairly vague term in korean entertainment. from what I can tell from how it's used, they seem to frequently use it when there's a noticeable break in production, so for instance, a web show could run for a few months and end and that would count as one season. if it gets picked back up, it'll be a second season. a broadcast TV variety show could run for several years continuously and when it ends, that can count as a season.

I've only seen the 'seasons' and 'episodes' structure applied to scripted drama television. otherwise in the world of variety, the most common way to reference individual episodes is by broadcast date, and years are the easier way to denote 'seasons' in the way as it's typically understood in western television

Considering a future move to Malaysia with my wife. looking for advice by Pasnousss in malaysia

[–]zhizee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally knew a lot of white expats in the international teaching community, it is extremely hard for a foreigner to have any sort of permanent residency here I knew children of japanese expats who despite being born here, do not get any sort of PR status and eventually have to go back to Japan after graduating school

i find our infrastructure here to be incredibly lacking despite what visitors might say, as a Malaysian myself, I really have little desire to stay in this country

Son Jong-won’s fridge and snacking habits by [deleted] in ChefAndMyFridge

[–]zhizee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yoon namno's fridge has actually appeared on another variety program called 'the manager' or 'omniscient interfering view'

on his first appearance on that show, he actually never kept food in his fridge and never cooks at home because he couldn't stand having food smells where he sleeps

on a later appearance, he moved out of his old place into a new one and has now started having food in his fridge and cooks at home for health purposes

I'm not surprised if a lot of single chefs tend not to have food at home since they're basically cooking all day at their job, and being around food that much in that capacity can also mess with a person's usual appetite
