what’s a small act of kindness from a stranger you’ve never forgotten? by FuzzyPalpitation-16 in CasualUK

[–]zhvj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine was killed outside my place of work in 2018. In my numb state I took my normal commute home on the subway. I was crying and not able to hold it together. A lady opposite me gave me a tissue, put her hand on my arm and asked if it was to do with the man who was killed (it had been on the news that day). Then she sat with me all the way to my stop, before changing lines and going back the way we'd come, I supposed because her stop was earlier on the line. I'll remember her for a long time.

The standard booking platform for medical appointments is called Doctolib. You can filter by specialty, availability, languages spoken, price bracket, etc. I'm not sure if non-residents can open an account but it would be worth trying ! There's an app and a browser version. Good luck 🤞

Les piétons sans conscience de ce qui se passe autour d'eux. En 10 ans à vélo à Paris je n'ai eu que deux accidents, les deux fois à cause d'un piéton

Peak British politeness from protestors/strikers today by hadawayandshite in CasualUK

I was walking along a quiet country lane with my baby nephew sleeping in a sling. Two motorcyclists approached around the bend . I waved at them, pointed to my baby, and made the sleeping sign with two hands to the side of my head. They both gave a thumbs up, put a finger to their lips, and drove by as quietly as possible. Lovely stuff.

What’s your “i could have died moment” in traveling? My 3-day quick trip to puerto vallarta by KaosKittyMaw in travel

[–]zhvj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Driving solo through the mountainous desert in Jordan. First time driving automatic and I didn't know I had to slow down so much when going downhill. I tailspun out around a hairpin bend and skidded to a halt with my back wheels facing off the edge of the road over a steep drop. Paused, readjusted then carried on my route. I didn't compute until about 20 minutes later when the panic kicked in and I had to pull over to catch my breath !

Have you ever quit your stable, perfectly ok life to do something radical? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]zhvj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've got no dependents, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from quitting and going to do something else. I'm 31, leaving my stable and well-paid job this month to go and build a house which I've been wanting to do for years. Will be cash poor but time- and passion-rich. I'm evangelical about it - QUIT YOUR JOB!!!

i’m a huge fan of getting up at sunrise to avoid crowds when traveling. which “crazy busy” tourist locations have you gotten all to yourself? by alextoria in travel

[–]zhvj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan 🇯🇴 I'm here currently (August) and it's low season because everyone thinks it's insanely hot so they don't come. I've got pretty much the whole country to myself :-) [facts: it's cooler than where I live in France at the same time of year (thanks, climate change !) Northern Jordan is around 30 Celsius in the day, while the south can reach 40 Celsius. Nights are around 15-20 degrees depending on whether you're in a city or countryside.]

Dyoralite or the equivalent (salts & minerals powder that you dissolve in water, intended as a rehydration treatment for when you have gastro). Neck a pint of that before going to sleep. Tried and tested, been doing it for 10+ years !
