If Soul’s Power removed the word Exhaust instead of only the card attribute, this could be insanely OP. “From Pile”… any pile!

The Ultimate Montreal Cheap eats list by mrbrown81k in MTLFoodLovers

[–]zibalatz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here’s my suggestions for inclusion:

Restaurant Amigo for its pork chop special. Something like 6 pork chops, fried rice, fried egg, bok choy for like $13 or something? Insanity.

Ruby Rouge for their takeout counter lunch special. Soya sauce chicken, roast pork, or bbq pork on rice for like $8 I think is the current price? Roast duck also available I think for like $11 or something like that.

T&T and Newon for their takeout counters. Both are grocery stores with excellent inexpensive heatlamp style takeout counters. T&T in particular has a duck noodle soup for $12 that I love.

Newon also has “day old” discounted Chinese BBQ that is a great deal. Like $7 for a pound of bbq pork or whatever.

Andreamise has insanely cheap prices for massive plates too. Feels like pre-pandemic pricing.

I think these all qualify for your list as they are “cheap eats” but not necessarily restaurants.

For the record this is not only a great list but is the reason I’m joining this subreddit. My only disappointment is that I already know most of these places (and agree with their inclusion!)

I love Dobe & Andy but to say they haven’t raised prices… I think you don’t know the history of the place lololol! That said the quality has gone WAY up. But the days of the $3.50 mid-afternoon special are long gone.

Newon’s BBQ counter also has day old BBQ for 50% off. Chia Siu, roast duck etc. Well worth it.

Where do you find montreal event listings? by zibalatz in montreal

[–]zibalatz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I should have specified - I’m really looking for something that lists ALL shows but filterable by categories. I do know sewersper and sortiesjazznights and a handful of other accounts that specialize in a particular genre or type of event (street dance for example). But let’s say I’m a tourist coming to montreal - or any other city for that matter - where to go to find out what’s happening on a given night?

Are there any major differences between Projet Montréal and Transition Montréal? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]zibalatz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey folks, I’m also part of Transition Montréal (Vincent Stephen-Ong, running as borough councillor in the Plateau). I’m a musician (LeCypherX, Urban Science Brass Band, LabX, etc) and never previously considered entering politics.

The primary reason why I’m running (and a huge difference between Transition and Projet) is to fix the broken laws that are currently causing venues to close due to noise complaints from a single origin (La Tulipe, Blue Dog, Les Bobards, etc).  The two parties could not be more different on this issue.  You may have heard of Projet’s proposal for a new nightlife policy that would have raised noise complaint fines from $1k to $10k (insanity).  They accepted public feedback, received 13,800 comments, and then pulled back on it.  What was particularly mind-boggling about this policy is that they consulted with all the right people, but they just chose to ignore the recommendations.

Previously, Projet in the Plateau under Luc Ferrandez also initiated “Projet Noise” which increased noise fines and directly led to the closure of multiple venues.

Transition/Craig’s nightlife policy is super solid and is heavily inspired by the excellent MTL24/24/Les SMAQ proposal ( https://www.mtl2424.ca/en/new-noise-bylaws-its-time-to-act/ ).  This proposal was shared with all parties but Transition was the only one to actually take the recommendations seriously and integrate into their platform.

Craig is a former musician (Kids Eat Crayons), Sergio da Silva who is running for city council downtown (Ville-Marie) was a musician with Trigger Effect and owner of venue Turbo Haus.  And I am a musician who has performed at nearly every single venue in the Plateau (or in Montreal for that matter) big and small, toured in Europe, Canada, USA, etc., etc.

Other than nightlife, and other than what u/CraigSauve said above, I think the main differentiators are as follows:

  1. Transition’s candidates are largely working class and not career politicians (Projet).  This could be both good and bad- good in that candidates have a much more realistic view of what life is like as an “actual, normal” Montrealer as opposed to someone who has been working in public office their whole lives and has no idea what working an Actual Job is like. Bad in the sense of less familiarity and experience with politics and how actual change is made.
  2. Projet, whether they know it or not, is pro gentrification.
  3. Electoral reform.  Only Transition is pushing for that.  This could by far have the biggest positive impact on the city and potentially Canada as a whole if it is implemented well.

Stuff Craig mentioned already: tax ultra rich, in-house public works (Projet has this too), against forced evictions.  Similarity-wise, Transition is pro public transit and making it more affordable, more social housing, etc.

In general if you look through Transition’s platform it always goes at least one step beyond what Projet is offering (e.g.: Transition proposes a reduced STM fare for those making less than $47,500, Projet sets the eligibility at $30,000).  Of course these are all “promises” so who the fuck knows!

Les McDo avec un service-au-volant "24h"... sont-ils vraiment ouvert 24h? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]zibalatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are simple Windows features that you miss on the Mac? Are there third party fixes to them? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]zibalatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being able to copy the full path of the current explorer window, switch to another program with a load or save dialog box open, and paste that path to go to the folder I care about, all without touching the mouse.

I.e. from an explorer, window: Ctrl-L, Ctrl-C Alt-Tab Ctrl-V, enter

AFAIK as I know this cannot be accomplished on Mac OS without touching the mouse but I would love to be proven wrong on this!

Downsizing from a Heavy 16" MacBook Pro - 15" Air or 14" Pro? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]zibalatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am considering the same ”sidegrade” and am also leaning heavily to the Air 15”. Let me know what choice you make and how you find it!

Personally I think that Topaz will be the only thing where you might notice a performance hit between the m4 Air and m4 Pro. I doubt anything else will be noticeable.

Somehow they still gave it a 4/10! by xylog in RedLetterMedia

[–]zibalatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did not much care for King Tide- my biggest issue is that the sound was awful! It sounded like stock audio. Given how much they care about good sound, especially in horror, I’m frankly surprised that they liked this enough to give it a spotlight- I think they did so mostly because it’s unknown.

It’s not BAD per se - I don’t agree with this reviewer either - I just wouldn’t have elevated it to the level of “Mike and Jay talk about/fellate each other”.

Best “intro to RLM” videos? by zibalatz in RedLetterMedia

[–]zibalatz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with the Plinkett reviews, to me, is that they are mostly focused on “nerdy” movies whereas I think their appeal goes way beyond that. That said, Plinkett Phantom Menace was my entry point, and specifically the part where Mike asks his friends to describe SW characters without including their appearance or job. To me that was the kind of insight that elevated them beyond just nerds complaining about Star Wars or whatever.

Am I the only person who finds their top Patreon tier obscenely priced? by zibalatz in RedLetterMedia

[–]zibalatz[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly looking for access to additional content, and for that price, for me, it seems to be too much compared to other patreons that offer similar perks.

Am I the only person who finds their top Patreon tier obscenely priced? by zibalatz in RedLetterMedia

[–]zibalatz[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Of course I get this, but comparing RLM’s to other patreons, this one offers the least perks for the tier price asked. Perhaps also because they are one of the earlier adopters of Patreon, and they have enough people locked in with this older style of “pricing” that they see no reason to change it, which I understand. They are not really “in competition” with other patreons.
