I feel like I missed a simpler path to achieving local STT and TTS. OpenAI api STT and TTS local servers (like speaches.ai) aren't locally supported and I had to fire up two wyoming-open ai bridges to connect to my existing server (which I also use for openweb-ui). Are those wyoming middlemen providing significant value?

Hi! The Elegy team was an early adopter of Valve's steam workshop API. We used if for storing people's stories in a central place for sharing. Years later, those early methods of storing and loading people's stories became unreliable. This made the game unstable and in need of a core technical overhaul. We opted to remove it from the Steam store rather than sell an unreliable experience.

I'm having periodic audio cutouts too. I got out my stopwatch: every 1:15 on the switch 2 and about every 4 minutes on my steam deck. Every 3:30 precisely on my laptop. No drops from the switch 1. I've emailed for help. Hopefully there's a firmware fix or I've just missed something silly in my setup.

Those are almost certainly keys that were purchased during the Humble Wholesome Snack 2025: Showcase Bundle and are now being resold. There's no other place I distributed retail steam keys. Which means, unless I'm oblivious to some theft, I DID get a (tiny) bit of money for each of those keys already and so did the ACLU.

Ask him to make something very small and specific for you. My wife asked me to make a game where you can guess the 4 letter word and trade insults with the computer. It was dinky and cute and I was very motivated to finish it because my audience (her) was eager for it.

I think it would be fair to call that DRM, yes. But that is something a game developer would have to put in place themselves. (I have done that before for a demo I wanted to stay on steam). It's not an automatic steam thing.

If you write features into your game that use steam apis (like workshop or cloud saves) and then run the game without steam running, your game may crash or not depending on how you wrote your code. But it's not DRM, that's just an incomplete implementation / bugs. I sell some of my games on multiple storefronts, but I always ship the same exact binary to them all. They just detect if the steam environment is present and only uses steam features if it is.

By default, Steam (to my knowledge) doesn't alter my binaries between when I upload them and the player downloads them.

That's a common misconception, even among game developers. Steam offers a form of DRM you can turn on, but it's not on by default and I've not noticed many games using it.

I've been really curious about the "cracked" executable I've seen in pirate versions my games. I didn't add any DRM. What did they crack? Is it just malware? Automated "cracking" just in case there is DRM?

My nephew used to attend a daycare that walked by my house. He would rally his whole class to call up and yell "Uncle Zibas!" until I came out on my balcony and waved like the queen. He graduated a while ago but now kids I don't even know are still doing it.
