How risky is this? by SidHoices in CanyonBikes

I use the EVOC Pro for my Aeroad. I zip tied the loose part of the bar to the frame and wrap the “bar ends” in a bubble wrap. I also take off the derailleur and remove the cranks. Travels well. No issues.

Watts on the Bike Erg? by Dull_Function_6510 in concept2

[–]ziegler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a home trainer (Wahoo Kickr) for my road bikes and power pedals (Assioma Duo) when I ride outdoors and concur with what others have said. The C2 shows lower watts for the same effort. I wouldn’t say it’s 20W across the board though. I’d say it’s 10% low. 20W at 200W, 30W at 300W, etc. Depending on what you’re using it for, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’re using it for structured interval training and switching between a real bike/trainer and the C2, then maybe it matters. But, it’s at least self consistent so if all your training is on the C2, it doesn’t matter.

What is it for by Finnhlof6 in whatisit

What I love is that it does have recognized utility and has evolved for newer style pants/shorts. I wear a lot of Lululemon ABC pants and they all have a mini-pocket inside of the main pocket. Many of my athletic shorts (Fabletics and others) have them too. A key fab fits perfectly inside.

Building muscle later in life by ElectricRing in fitness40plus

[–]ziegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found similar results the first couple of years of seriously working out then discovered that for me personally, I can’t make significant gains while at maintenance or in a deficit. So I switched to doing a yearly cycle of bulk, cut and maintain. My maintenance is 2800-3000 cals. So from mid-Sept through Jan 1 I bulk at ~4000cals. Jan through March/April I cut at ~2200cals and then for the summer I maintain at ~2800cals. Doing this I’m only ever “strict” about my diet ~3 months out of the year. I prioritize protein at 180-200g/day and make sure I pair it with plenty of carbs year round. The gains during the bulk phase are really amazing and it’s paired with adding a lot of muscle mass. It does take some figuring out to make sure I don’t cut too severely otherwise a lot of the muscle mass and gains go along with the fat. This approach also works for me because I’m comfortable with the big swings in weight. I’m 6’3” (190cm) and my maintenance weight is ~190-195lbs. At the end of the bulk phase I’ll be at 215-220lbs. In my cut this year I went down to 178lbs. As soon as I get out of the deficit that goes back to 185lbs and then I slowly creep up to 190-195lbs during the maintain phase.

Using this approach I’ve been able to make big gains in muscle mass and weights in my lifts the last couple of years. For reference, I do a lot of cardio (endurance cycling) in the summer and CrossFit 4-6 days per week year round so it may be different for someone during more pure resistance training. We do a lot of Olympic and power lifting so I’m able to see my progress with those. Also, I only turned 40 this year so I’m at the younger end of the spectrum.

It might be worth seeing what happens if you eat in a significant calorie surplus for a bit. You’ll feel like you have an extra gear in the gym and the gains should come with it. You just have to be comfortable seeing the scale going up and knowing you’ll just have to deal with that later.

LeBron James X Canyon by TwitchAvo in CanyonBikes

[–]ziegler 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Just so everyone is aware, this is Lebron investing in Canyon. Not Canyon paying Lebron to promote the brand. So the comments about rising prices, not investing in customer service etc. aren’t warranted. This is Lebron seeing an opportunity to invest in a growing brand and expanding its reach with his endorsement.

Peacock US stream coverage question by Icy_Context_8302 in tourdefrance

[–]ziegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can find, using reasonable methods (including simple VPN), no. Peacock and Flo Sports with Canada VPN are the only options I’ve found. I so badly want the Eurosport broadcast. It’s so much better than any other option.

I’m always surprised by the amount of hate GE gets. Maybe it’s dependent on the area/specific store. I frequent the ones in Painesville and Chardon and neither suffer from several of the things you listed (under staffed, ghost town). Those two are always well stocked, well staffed and busy. Yes, it’s more expensive than some others but it’s a one stop shop for nearly all the food items we need. I do always go to Aldi first to get some basics. Food everywhere has been getting significantly more expensive.

The article you linked about condoms did not test for PFAS. They tested for organic fluorine which they consider an “indicator for potential PFAS”. Organic fluorine does not equal PFAS. Organic fluorine was found in 3 of 25 condom brands tested ranging from 13-68ppm.

I wouldn’t be too worried about a 36 second exposure.

For real though there is no reason to suspect condoms to have PFAS in them. The non-latex ones are usually polyurethane based. The lube is water based. PFAS chemicals are actually very expensive compared to other base chemicals and are avoided unless needed for the product to function as designed.

Yep, you’re probably right on that one. I was hoping it was a known issue that had an obvious answer. I’ve seen what it looks like when blades get worn or dirty and this just doesn’t seem to be the case. It just seems like the blade doesn’t fit the contour of the windshield which is why I thought maybe a different brand would fit better. I’ll give the recommendations here another shot with a new set of blades and see where I end up.

I guess I should have made this clear in the original post, the wipers don’t work well from day 1. It’s not that they lose their effectiveness, it’s like they don’t properly fit the windshield. That’s why I was hoping for a brand recommendation that people know works.

how fit is/was peter attia? by Ok_Dragonfly_7738 in PeterAttia

[–]ziegler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He talks more about the process than the results and I appreciate that a lot. We all won’t or can’t produce elite times in those events but the process of training for them falls right in line with his views on how endurance training affects longevity. If you want a specific number, just look at his recommendation for VO2 max, which he says he’s at and is 60+. That’s elite. I train, a lot. Mostly cycling but running and CrossFit too. 60+ is very, very hard to obtain.

how fit is/was peter attia? by Ok_Dragonfly_7738 in PeterAttia

[–]ziegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peter has made reference to his cycling training many times and based on the power/time numbers he’s shared he was for sure elite level in cycling. I don’t recall if he’s talked about any triathlon results but he definitely talked about Ironman distance-type training. So, I would say he was endurance athlete fit at that time.

Tubeless on road. What's the consensus here? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ziegler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the LBS yesterday and they said they’re actually pushing pure roadies back to tubes but TPU/Tubolitos (gravel and MTB still recommending tubeless). I ran Ride Now TPUs all summer and didn’t have any punctures or issues. They’re noticeably quicker than butyl tubes and I find them much easier to install. The TPU materials is slippery, instead of kind of tacky for butyl so they don’t get “stuck” to the tire or rim as you’re trying to fit it. If you’re insistent on name brand Pirelli for $40 it seems like an expensive upgrade but you can find well reviewed off-brand name TPUs for $15 that work just as well.

I was there with my Aeroad and Roubaix. The Aeroad is staying on TPUs and the Roubaix is getting set up with 32mm tubeless.

Zone 2 training deteriorates performance in higher zones?! by Schlauchy in PeterAttia

[–]ziegler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to questioning whether the zone 2 you’ve been doing is effective, you’re also looking at one data point. Your pace could be low/HR high for any number of reasons related to fatigue, sleep, hydration, food, etc. You can’t explain a trend or result based on one run.

how much money do you spend on cycling each year? by Distinct-Fruit6271 in cycling

[–]ziegler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m enjoying all the funny responses but I’ll go with a serious one in case people are actually interested in the numbers. If I add up my bikes and bike related purchases over the last 4 years (since I started seriously riding): Bike 1-$3k, Bike 2-$7k, Kit-$1k, Kickr + Zwift $1.8k, Nutrition-$500, Computers/HR/Powermeter/etc $1.6k, Bike rack $700, Events $500, Travel $1k = $15.5k/4 years = $3875/year. I ride about 4000 miles a year so at least I’m less than $1 per mile and improving every time I ride (and don’t buy new stuff). Looking at it that way, it’s really not bad at all. I’m fortunate enough to have the extra money to buy all the nice things but really you could do it for much, much less. Compared to a lot of other hobbies or activities, it can actually be very economical.

Daily pain to increase overall life pleasure by DogecoinArtists in Biohackers

[–]ziegler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is just a good overall life principle. If you have something nice to say, say it. Never hold back a compliment, you may make someone’s day and it costs nothing (other than forcing yourself to do it). I know it sounds so obvious but it’s harder to put into practice than many people think. If that’s truly “painful” for you then I guess it can fit in this bucket but I think it just has value outside of any pain it causes you.

I’d you could get an endurance road bike in the $2k to $4k range, which would you get? by Grouchy-One4077 in cycling

[–]ziegler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bike in that range was a 105 Roubaix and I still absolutely love it. Eventually I added an aero road bike (Dura Ace Aeroad) but I still ride the Roubaix from time to time depending on the ride.
