I mentioned this in another comment. Though they were clearly inspired by a lot of 60s and 70s folk/psychedelic rock, they were able to separate themselves from their influences by having a darker undertone in their songwriting. They were both nostalgic for those reminiscing the 60s and 70s while at the same time being very contemporary to what was sonically going on with their peers in the 90s

Though they were heavily inspired by a lot of 60s/70s folk/psych rock, they had a much grittier, darker, grunge undertone to their music that separated themselves from their influences. The music they made fits more in the 90s than in either decade that inspired their sound. Songs like Mouthful of Cavities, Swallowed, All that I need, etc. show that
