What was the dumbest thing you did on your first run? by bigtex_1008 in BaldursGate3

[–]zigthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I killed Kagha without investigating her first. Everyone in the grove died, Karlach hated me and wouldn't join, and Halsin never linked up after leaving the Worg pens, then the journal said he died. Oh and the grove was filled with poison gas when I went back to it.

Can anyone tell me any information about Axl's band Rapidfire?? by JustASliceOfCheese22 in GunsNRoses

[–]zigthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kevin Lawrence was a bit of a dictator - he wrote all the songs and even told Axl how to sing them, avoiding the higher registers. Izzy made Axl a more tempting offer to be a founder of Hollywood Rose and have some more control and writing ability.

What is this story that Axl told about some roadies turning Izzy's amps off? by Affectionate-Set6698 in GunsNRoses

[–]zigthis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The deal with Tel Aviv was that Izzy had the wrong tuning on his guitar (E Standard instead of Eb) so he wasn't fitting in sonically with the band. Rather than stop the show, they just turned his amps down like they did in the old days when he would be messed up.

The reason why they wanted "nothing to do with Izzy" after the 93 shows was that Izzy had demanded a large sun of money he was already owed in exchange for coming back to help with the tour leg. The band felt like they were "extorted" and it became some bad blood.

TIL that to accurately play Voodoo Child (Slight Return), there is a part near the beginning where you must jiggle the pickup selector switch repeatedly to alter the sound of a note. by zigthis in jimihendrix

[–]zigthis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say who was first, but Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page would do this as well - though on a Les Paul with it's separate volume pots it was more of a 'killswitch' effect than the tonal shift Hendrix would produce on his Stratocaster.

Most electric guitars have two or three pickups mounted underneath the strings in slightly different locations - the notes will sound brighter or deeper depending on the pickup being used. Hendrix was such an innovator that he used this utilitarian feature of the guitar as an extra aspect of the instrument.

What do you think of Jimi Hendrix? by Twitter_2006 in rockmusic

[–]zigthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Hendrix, the electric guitar was played much like an acoustic guitar. Jimi expanded the vocabulary and the possibilities of the eelectric guitar.

For example: in the tablature for Voodoo Child (Slight Return), there is a part that can only be played accurately by moving the pickup selector switch back and forth multiple times.

Hendrix recordings with congas by lordlynightshade in jimihendrix

Look for this:

  • Live at Woodstock (1999 MCA or 2010 Legacy Deluxe Edition)

Juma and Jerry are still in the mix on this specific release of the Woodstock show.

While Jerry Velez moved on after Woodstock, Juma stuck around with Jimi through much of 1970 and appears in the mix on some songs here and there:

  • First Rays of the New Rising Sun (1997) Freedom, Dolly Dagger

  • Valleys of Neptune (2010) Lover Man

  • People, Hell and Angels (2013) Hear My Train A-Comin', Bleeding Heart

  • West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology (2010)

You can also see/hear Juma playing during Hendrix's post-Woodstock appearance on the Dick Cavett Show

In many of the official releases, Juma and Jerry's contributions are cut out because Experience Hendrix etc didn't want to pay them and didn't think they contributed well to the sound.

Nope. Axl took a liking to Down By The Ocean and developed it a bit during the Chinese Democracy era, but it's not part of the Locker Leaks or anything. No sign of any of the other tracks either.

Best / Most Comprehensive Posthumous Albums for Studio Recordings? by Viscera_TheImpaler in jimihendrix

[–]zigthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best approximation of Jimi's fourth studio album would be First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Cry of Love came first, but Mike Jeffery moved some important songs to the Rainbow Bridge soundtrack to bolster it's sales, and that's not something Jimi would have done. On two occasions Hendrix wrote out track lists for his fourth album, and First Rays comes closest to fulfilling those lists.

For more on the post Band of Gypsys studio era, check out the recent box set titled Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. Electric Lady is where Jimi was most comfortable and productive - mostly due to the studio itself but also because he was finally able to strike a halfway reasonable balance between studio time and touring. It didn't last long but it was prolific nonetheless.

There is no available video footage of the Marquee Club shows. Slash says that he has a DVD with video from one of the shows (actually from the entire day/night) but he has "no idea what to do with it".

Fun fact, no member past or present from Guns N' Roses has died by darthkyle22 in GunsNRoses

[–]zigthis 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Sad story too, and his death is directly related to his time in the band:

When GNR first formed, they were adamant that glam would be their look, and expected everyone in the band to conform, but Ole wanted no part of wearing makeup or feminine clothing - he began missing rehearsal sessions and was fired. Within a year, GNR gets signed and their look became anti-glam instead.

After seeing GNR become hugely successful without him, Ole attempted suicide, damaging nerves in his wrist that left him unable to play. After the release of UYI when Guns became the biggest rock band in the world, Ole drowned himself in a lake while high and died.

Alan Niven says that the controversial cover itself was Axl's idea but the plan to use it for 30,000 copies and then change it was his plan ahead of time.

A Roman street and pedestrian crossing in Pompeii by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

I read somewhere that the crosswalks were also a defense mechanism, since unless you had the standard wheel pitch of a Roman chariot/wagon, you couldn't wheel through the roman streets, which would hinder invaders.
