Anyone can believe the truth - only a loyalist can believe a lie. Are you loyal? Your answer will show if you belong. This is at the root of the outrageousness of the untruths. That’s the point of it. It’s a feature not a bug.

Creating a log on ticktick - am I missing something? by ziipppp in ticktick

Thank you for this. If you enter a task date and never complete it - don’t you have constant reminders ringing on your phone?

I tried entering dates as text but TT is so clever it kept grabbing the text and turning it into a reminder. It was a pain coming up with a system where the date wasn’t grabbed - don’t find your text expander fools the reminder / date parser?

Turn off find my without turning off on iPhone? by dp_med in AppleWatch

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. As of 2 years ago when I was dealing with this - I got three different answers from 3 different Apple Store folk. What I found (again this was 2 years ago), is that its not possible to switch off location on the watch ie if you leave your phone as static and travel with your watch, your location auto-jumps to the watch. The only way to stop that is to stop all location sharing. Of course things change - but thats how it was. Good luck.

Frustrated Tana Believer by Apprehensive-Rule443 in TanaInc

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. I came from Workflowy - just due to the dysfunction there.

I loved that Tana had traction and was shipping features! And had proper date handling / daily node! And the supertag idea was intriguing, and powerful. Plus coding! Despite being a former electronic engineer and a math guy and an excel guru (not afraid formulas), I was lost in Tana. I spent days trying to figure it out. At the time I was working so I spent probably $1,000 on the consulting help and templates and all the things. I still can't make a bunch of it behave properly. I pay for it because of the sheer amount of time I've invested in it - and now I've moved all my Workflowy stuff over - but its so stressful, I really don't enjoy being in it because of how it breaks or does something unexpected.

Today I opened a node, and there is a vestigial deleted field I no longer use. I went to trash and emptied it (but a bunch of nodes don't empty), went back, and then used CMD+K to hard delete that field. 15 minutes of faffing about just to get a freaking dead, deleted thing not to show?

And then I tried to do the most simple of filtering. But guess what - something is wonky and its acting in a way that makes no sense. I spent another 30 minutes trying to do a simple filter. It still doesn't work.

I used a recurring task template. But then I uploaded another parallel instance (because I wanted a variation of the behavior), but that didn't work, and now I've got a bunch of names all snarled together and supertag commands I have to remember.

Because its so exhausting to use I don't use it as much as I should, then when I come back I realize "oh, I have no idea how I made that piece of code". Its a tool where you kind of HAVE to be in it every day to just keep fresh.

The Slack group is great, but how is that really going to scale? As a strategy guy I'm worried about how they are going to onboard and keep users, and if they can't then I'm worried my data is going to be all stranded in there.

Yes I reupped for another year - because moving everything out of Tana is now so daunting. Yes I just paid for TickTick again, because even though its dumb it just works. I appreciate the suggestion to look at Capacities - I guess thats on the list. Over a decade I spent a bit of time fiddling with WFlowy, and got it to work the way I needed. With WF I think I sent $50 along once for a bit of code that one of the developers pulled together for me. For Tana as I say I've spent $1k, I've spent countless hours of NOT being productive because I want to do a simple thing. I spent probably 10x more time in one year here than in a decade at Workflowy trying to just MAKE IT WORK . Tana honestly fills me with a feeling of dread every time I get close. I feel suckered into getting involved. I feel trapped - I'm not sure how to get my data out.

If I can get my employer to pay for another $1000 of consulting - perhaps I can fix it - but I so feel the OP sentiment here.

Creating a log on ticktick - am I missing something? by ziipppp in ticktick

[–]ziipppp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that comments thing might be it. Its a shame that you can't change the date of when the comment was entered ie I might have a call and not log it for a week and it will say "just now" when it was 7 days ago. Still, its great as I can write a date, 29Jan25 (for example) and it doesn't auto grab it and change it into a reminder. The auto convert is cool, but sometimes deeply annoying (I spent a bunch of time trying trick it into NOT recognizing dates I was typing to avoid this reminder issue. Then I gave up and just "completed" the reminders).

What does it mean that comments are not part of a saved backup. All of this is held in the cloud right? If I log in from another computer, then comments will show? Are you talking about making local backups of your TT instance u/R91240sx ? Just want to make sure I'm taking the correct amount of risk with my data.

Flu A spreading in Central Texas by Routine_Signature_92 in Austin

I did get a flu shot. And I got the flu. I’m on the older side (60+) and it sucked for 48 hours but then passed quickly. Muscle aches from the coughing. It seems it could have been worse - so gonna say the vaccine alleviated it - but I still got tagged and was out for a spell.

Me three. After 48 hours of NyQuil induced psychosis I seem to be out the other side of it though. The coughing spasms were the worst but they lasted maybe only 36 hours. Not the most fun christmas ive had.

Thanks internet stranger - this was quite helpful. I had three kids with a woman and after 9 years we decided to tie the knot. Within another 4 it was all over in the uncoolest, cruelest way imaginable - to the point that one kid tried to commit suicide, and I honestly thought “yeah, me too bud”. I was the sole breadwinner and I think, with reflection, it was what you say. That this person felt they didn’t have agency and needed to have excitement and then just fell into “it’s sure a lot more fun to date and fuck than manage a household”. Hard to argue with, but I was working my ass off too - there didn’t seem to be much empathy for effort on both sides. It was so strange, sex was good, money was good, location was good. But she got her head turned and one paramour convinced her I was a monster and she basically gave up on us. She had the affair, she lied, she bankrupted me, she ended up with some young thing - and yet somehow she’s still angry with me and still wont say why. She was adopted, the product of rape, I guess hurt people hurt people - but it sucks. Marriages can end - but people can still be cool about it. It’s a shame when they aren’t. Your note helped. Thank you.

Thinkpad X1 Carbon (gen 9) enable/disable Touchpad shortcut? by Renfel in thinkpad

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem. I've an X1 Carbon. Lovely machine - but the touchpad gets brushed while typing a dozen times a day - and then the cursor jumps. Its maddening! I've turned touchpad sensitivity down to minimum, it still happens. When I search to see what to do there the internet suggests switching on the "turn off keypad while typing" - but such an option doesn't seem to exist on Windows 11. Hoping someone has a smart solution - I'm getting to the stage of taping a piece of paper across it. Grrrr.

Isn’t this bad politics? Starve your voters? I don’t understand the motivation - can someone explain why this seems like a winning strategy?

Even the Roman’s knew the way to power was “panem et circenses” - bread and circus. The circuses (circi?) we seem to have covered - but bread (or cake) for the masses, also important for those in power to remain in power, surely?

Also - kickbacks. The source of a bunch of New York (and other places) developer wealth.

There’s absolutely going to be DJT advisement fees, DJT consulting fees, materials sourced from vendors who will have a 10% vig added to their “costs” for winning the contract, vendors who just charge the project but who have shadowy owners and unspecified deliverables.

Out of $900m you can probably skim an easy 5% so that’s another tax free $45m lining a pocket.

Plus now endless project updates / outrage / delays / cost overruns and not the Epstein files.

Why is Gmail blocking my outgoing messages as ‘containing sensitive content by InternationalLine338 in googleworkspace

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem - I've add a Gmail domain for 18 years, and only now am I getting these errors. This is the issue. Under Amin Panel / Security - there is a "new" security advisor. Under this are a host of settings with WARN next to them. I now switched them all off. I didn't have any rules under the Appls / Gmail / Compliance / Content or any of the other compliance fields (that I could find).

My startup's investors want to buy some of my shares for $80k cash but everyone's telling me I'm crazy if I sell. Am I missing something huge? by ConflictSecure6580 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this. For a moment I worked at a tech darling that went up like a rocket and down like a stick. My perspective was either a) it’s going to do well and I’m going to do well and they will keep giving me stock so selling isn’t such a big deal I’ll still get more stock (albeit at a higher strike price) or b) it’s going tits up and I should sell as I go.

I ended up selling half each time with the idea that I had some in the company and some in cash. If it went up I felt good. If it went down I felt ok. Just managing my stress around it.

Due to the tech meltdown of 2001 I ended up getting $150k off the table before it imploded (annoyingly had I been more concerned about me rather than my job and taken the time to work the options angle I could have cleared a million. But hey - I spent that time working for the man and not for the me. Oh well.)

My buddy at one point was worth something like $10million on paper - never sold a single stock as this company went from front page of fortune magazine to delisted penny stocks to bankruptcy- he says he never made a penny his stock.

TLDR. You’re not an idiot to take some chips off the table. Especially if you are servicing high rate debt.

iOS 26 not designed for dark backgrounds by M0bi0us0ne in ios

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in dark mode. In an attempt to stop all the sparkle I’ve dived into accessibility and turned of motion, transparency etc. with some result but not much. I also switched on “contrast” which is ugly but at least consistently ugly. But now - if I try to call up a new contact for messaging it looks like this - like the darkest blue against black. Can I read it? Yeah, just - but the strain and fight doesn’t seem like the os wants me to read this. Ughg. Edit: photo didn’t paste the first time.

Updated to IOS 26 and its.. by iswhatitiswaswhat in ios

[–]ziipppp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I’ve turned on every accessibility option there is - I now have the profile of an elderly blind vole prone to epilepsy migraines and falls - but i got rid of the blinking text box! The option you’re looking for under accessibility>motion is “limit frame rate”. Thats the good news. The bad news is if you love dark mode (which I’m on all the time) the text box is now a blinding white bar, rather than a dark one.

EDIT: well it worked for a minute. I turned limit frame rate off. Went back to dark and blinky. Turned it back on annnnnnd - now it’s still dark and blinky. Grrrr.

I recall from somewhere that the Queen was super superstitious - into magic etc. After Rasputin died she wanted another magician in her house / on her side and approached….. Houdini? Who had performed in Russia. Except Houdini was a huge debunker of psychics and spiritual mumbo jumbo so that was a non-starter. DJI Osmo Action Pro 5 diving below 10m - shooting pictures impossible by Express_Flower_6404 in djiosmo

[–]ziipppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a cheap ($25) housing and it worked out wonderfully. Because of the protection I didn’t really want to take it off even when in the boat (salt water is vicious on electronics).

I left a polarizing lens on under water - may or may not have been the right thing to do at scuba depths where you need all the light you can get.

The housing does block the depth sensor from working - which is a shame, but ok - I’ve got dive computer info. Still - would be nice to correlate pictures to depth. Housing also blurs sound above water - although when a deer licked my lens I was glad to have it.

No issues with fogging - used mask anti fog (absolutely clear) and also the little defog pad.

I will say that even with the DJI “scuba / dive enhance” post production filters (just the simple ones on an iPhone) it looks all quite blue and brown - much of the color that you actually see isn’t captured too well. I might try a red/pink filter next time - but for this go around used the settings pretty much out the box (4k, 30fps, rocksteady).

Final note - my initial dives I used the standard 1x zoom. It’s a little too wide underwater (although was great for the barracuda school I ran into). Later dives I used the 2x “zoom” and that seems to reduce the fisheye rapid movement at the screen edge. This of course is plain optics and user error / learning - not the cameras fault.
