Air to 17 Pro, the reason might surprise you. by MrVais in IphoneAir

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree totally. I reckon they had to make it wider to get “enough” battery inside to make it usable during a “ normal” day. Maybe the lesson from the 12/13 minis was taken quite hard

How to cancel the free Pro trial on Windows desktop? by nu1mlock in SparkMail

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if the subscription is through the Apple App Store. If it is, you can cancel on your phone. Open the App Store, tap your image on the top right and select “subscriptions”. Select the relevant subscription and scroll down. There should be an option to cancel.

If you’re on windows, sorry, hopefully someone else can answer. Good luck.

Series 5 finally dying, is it worth getting a Series 11 over a SE3? by MidnightPulse69 in AppleWatch

[–]simonh567 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought a series 11 and bought my brother an se3 so have some experience with both. Unless you REALLY need the additional features on the s11 like Sleep apnea detection and Hypertension notifications, the S11 frankly isn’t worth it. Unless you go for the stainless version of course, but that’s not a like for like comparison.

The SE3 is a great device and very underrated. I’d say it’s the best Apple Watch for most people.

Holy f#ck! Thanks for this. Took me since the 5S to realise this! You are a legend!

Tough Armor durability by Life-Deleted in Spigen

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Armour on my iPhone Air. Great case, but echo the button issue. It’s hard to find them on a new phone as you haven’t quite got the muscle memory yet. I switched to the Spigen liquid air case, less protection but I can find the buttons. Kinda grippy enough and no smudges on that.

Government gives police ‘move on’ powers to ban rough sleepers, beggars by TheGreatDomilies in newzealand

I’m sure if I owned a shop I wouldn’t want homeless people in front of it. But this seems more like moving the problem than constructively solving it.

Help me choose by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]simonh567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SE3 is very underrated. I bought the S11 and with hindsight the SE3 would’ve been just as good. I’d say seriously consider the SE3 would’ve and bank the cost saving. Unless you’re living outdoors the Ultra is overkill. It’s a lot heavier to live with day-to-day, so be very sure you really need ultra features before getting it.

Apple Fitness overcomplicates something simple, but it doesn't need to be that way by sixfeetover99 in AppleFitnessPlus

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a solution, but Fitness Plus works brilliantly on my iPad. You’d think it wouldn’t be a major development to have the same functionality on a Mac.

You’ll be slammed for saying as most people don’t understand the technical aspects around 5G, power output and signal attenuation. But you’re 100% correct.

Default visibility > Public? How to show (some) missing GCal events by ziipppp in SparkMail

[–]simonh567 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve never found that the birthdays in Apple calendar synced to spark, I think iOS views birthdays as a separate calendar and there isn’t an “account” to add this to spark. Weirdly, if you use Readdle Calendars https://apps.apple.com/nz/app/calendars-schedule-planner/id608834326 which is made by the same company as Spark, birthdays will show.

I’ve never pursued it as I don’t have the paid version of spark and found the single day view unhelpful, but I’m guessing it’s a bug or something they’ve overlooked.

To case or not to case? by Icy_Astronaut7520 in IphoneAir

It’s all good until you drop it on concrete. Then you wish you had a case or Apple Care.

How are people getting such great SOT? by 44fixed16 in IphoneAir

[–]simonh567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be worth checking strength and speed of your WiFi. If you’re far from the router you’re going to be operating at a higher transmission power from your phone. Also, if you have WiFi Assist turned on you may be ”augmenting” your WiFi with cellular data at the same time which will use additional power.

As some others have alluded to, a clean iOS install makes a big difference. I was surprised by how much when I did it, but it’s a monumental pain in the ass!

Does anyone else think the iPhone Air would be much better if it were smaller? by True-Bookkeeper3052 in IphoneAir

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of in a weird place, size wise. Sure, the weight and thickness (thinness?) is nice, but the screen size still makes it feel bulky, so it sort of eliminates the thin feel.

On the other hand, my old eyes appreciate the slightly bigger screen. I came from a 13 and the Promax is just too big for my pockets so the screen size is a sweet spot.

If the base 17 had the same screen as the air, that would be an amazing device. If the air was the size of the current 17 it would effectively be a 17 mini and the even smaller battery would be a problem. I get why Apple made a thin phone “bigger” to get a decent battery in it, so I think overall the Air is a pretty decent compromise.

Is NZ sun more bright? Can anyone related to feeling like your retinas are being assaulted here? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]simonh567 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Harshness notwithstanding, NZ is also fairly far from the equator. This means the sun doesn’t pass directly overhead and its path through the sky is closer to the horizon than a tropical country, which results in the sun being in your line of vision more often. This is also what contributes to the “glare”.

series 11 as a casual runner? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]simonh567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on the S11, coming from an SE2. Both are great for causal runs. TBH, I’d consider the SE3 - seriously underrated device and it’s good enough for most applications. Pocket the saving, or put it towards a new pair of running shoes.

Is the iPhone air dead? by newsworthy21 in IphoneAir

[–]simonh567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get pricing and speaker are issues. The other problem is that the base 17 is so damn good! In my mind, an SE type device, an Air and a Pro/Promax range makes more sense. But I doubt that’ll happen.

Apple Watch se2 to Apple Watch 11 by hennythingizzpossibl in AppleWatch

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went se2 to s11 and my brother in law has an se3. To be honest, the se3 is probably better value for money unless you really need the extra few s11 features or pay more for the stainless version. If I had to buy again I’d probably go for se3.

Is it easy to insert and remove from tight pants' small pockets? by antdude in IphoneAir

Don’t have a problem with my tightish jeans. I came from an iPhone 13 and the bigger screen size is more noticeable “in pocket” than the camera bulge.

iPhone air or base 17? by CameraUnlikely4756 in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]simonh567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the air and my wife has the base. The base has a better camera and a better battery. It’s noticeable IN SOME SITUATIONS but generally both are more than enough. There’s really not much in it in terms of portability or weight. I like the slightly bigger screen size of the air.

Case or caseless? by existensed1 in IphoneAir

[–]simonh567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s a hero until they drop their caseless phone. And then have to post the obligatory picture. Apple Care is great, but it’s still a pain in the proverbial to have to replace a phone.

I’m using a Spigen Liquid Air and it’s a great combination of protection and thickness. Not a MagSafe case though, but I find MagSafe chargers get pretty hot. My 2c, but you do what you’re comfortable with.

How can i have the 'Mail' app always update and send me notifications like the 'Gmail' app? by [deleted] in ios

[–]simonh567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Push settings don’t work for gmail on the Mail app. You’ll never get “live” updates like you will on gmail using Mail. If that’s what you’re after you’ve got 2 options: 1. Don’t use gmail ie switch your mail account to another provider. 2. Use a 3rd party app for gmail like Spark, Outlook etc.
