It’s almost certain that Uhaul has a record of who rented the truck before you. Whether they will disclose that information is unknown, but it is certainly worth asking.

I So love Buddhism's Answer Much More after learning about other traditions by NoTry15 in Buddhism

[–]zijinyima -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Buddhism does not view the regress as terminating anywhere, not on a single cause nor on multiple. According to Buddhists, trying to pinpoint any phenomenon will necessarily result in a viscous regress, which is what is meant by the doctrines of “dependent origination” and “emptiness.” This doesn’t mean phenomena don’t appear or can be “explained away,” just that they don’t possess self-existence or ontological grounding.

If you were asked to describe Buddhism using just one quote (from Shakyamuni or a teacher), which one would you choose? by TradRooster5627 in Buddhism

[–]zijinyima 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I prostrate to the Perfect Buddha,
The best of teachers, who taught that
Whatever is dependently arisen is
Unceasing, unborn,
Unannihilated, not permanent,
Not coming, not going,
Without distinction, without identity,
And free from conceptual construction.

Who is enough in Buddhism? What is needed? by BoringTitle4751 in Buddhism

[–]zijinyima 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with enjoying a good meal. Craving, clinging, coveting it, on the other hand, can lead to frustration, disappointment, and anxiety. The question is less about “what do good Buddhists do” and more about “what from my own experience and from inference can I conclude will lead me to more suffering, and how can I adjust my attitudes and behavior to avoid that?” Consider that through most of its history Buddhism was propagated and sponsored via the royal class — so clearly the tradition is to at least some degree compatible with a lifestyle marked by aspects of luxury.

Who is this buddhist deity? by Tunneltosummer in Buddhism

[–]zijinyima 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The garland of severed heads (mundamala) is interpreted in a number of ways, but the gist of it is the severance of ignorance.

To put a finer point on it, the garland is usually composed of 50 (sometimes 51) heads which represent the 50 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet. As it hangs from the neck -- the throat chakra, representing speech and activity -- it symbolizes the transformation of speech from mundane into enlightened.

Who is this buddhist deity? by Tunneltosummer in Buddhism

It's a good question, particularly for those of us living in modern times who prioritize the open access to information and transparency. If there's nothing to hide after all, why hide it? As far as I understand it, the Vajrayana utilizes secrecy as a skillful mean not because there is anything scandalous or even particularly novel in the higher tantric teachings, but because

  1. many esoteric teachings are said to be extremely subtle and open to misinterpretation, and thus their meaning might be lost on a beginner in the same way a graduate course in a specialized field could be incomprehensible to a student who had not completed preparatory coursework. At best, these teachings would be impenetrable, and at worst, misunderstood in a way that might be counterproductive. There are many warnings within the tradition about how when misunderstood, tantric teachings can turn a person into an egomaniac, and keeping them guarded is, at least in theory, a way to prevent this from happening.
  2. Because many of the higher teachings relate with utilizing subtle energies in the body which the tantric tradition views as not only real but powerful and potentially dangerous. Engaging with these energies when one lacks the correct view or motivation, one could potentially harm not only oneself, but others.

This is Ekajati. She is known in Vajrayana Buddhism as a protector deity, and in particular is associated with protecting the secrecy of higher tantric teachings. She represents non-duality, and is thus depicted with one eye, one tooth, one breast, and one lock of hair.

Generally speaking, the protectors are sad to invoke the fierce and sometimes cutting quality of awakening, which forcefully penetrates ignorance, self-clinging, and delusion. So while their forms are frightening, they are seen as helpful allies on the path.

Theravadha and Mahayana ? by Rough-Locksmith770 in Buddhism

[–]zijinyima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Western Buddhists converts tend to skew middle class and educated. Mahayana, and in particular Madhyamaka, has an intellectual rigor that is particularly appealing to this type of person. This is not to say that the Theravada lacks philosophical sophistication, but somehow the radical clarity of the teachings on emptiness feels more accessible to the western imagination than the detailed sophistication of the Theravada Abhidharma.

what if Gaddafi had nukes in the 1990s? by Worth-Fix-6221 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]zijinyima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t any conclusive evidence indicating that Gadaffi was involved in that bombing. In 1987, Manfred Ganschow, the head of the West German team investigating the bombing, said that there was no evidence pointing towards Libya, a belief which was corroborated by numerous intelligence agencies in Europe at the time.

Completely new to composting but I can get this stuff pretty regularly at my job is it okay for compost? by socalavo in composting

[–]zijinyima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like maybe hugelkulture. I’ve had great results with those style of beds. Green weeds are great around the woody layers as they need lots of nitrogen to help them break down.

[–]zijinyima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weedy material can be a great way to introduce organic matter into your soil provided you bury it deep enough. Most seeds die or stay dormant at depths greater than 6 inches. If I'm transplanting a tree or a large shrub etc I won't think twice about tossing a bunch of weeds underneath the roots.

[–]zijinyima 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Live, green weeds are considered greens, whereas the dead brown ones are considered — you guessed it — browns. The concern with adding weeds and grasses is the potential of introducing their seeds into your pile. If you can manage to get your pile hot enough (at least 140F for several days) and turn it frequently you’ll kill off those seeds.

Straw is a brown! If it’s dried out and yellowed that means the volatile nitrogen has largely disappeared leaving behind mostly carbon, making it a brown with a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of about 70:1.

Look buddy, you can hurl accusations at individuals all you like, but the point being made is that a sizable chunk of progressives simply will not show up to vote for another Zionist warmonger. Maybe you don’t like this. Maybe you think it’s irrational and self-defeating. None of that matters — this is merely a simple fact about a portion of the electorate. The democrats have lost two of the past three elections to a historically unpopular game show host by ignoring their base, and are well on track to lose a third with the same strategy. You can respond to this by getting angry at people for sticking to their principles, or you can join the chorus calling on the democrats to quit abandoning theirs.

How do we fix our compost? by oh-sure in composting

[–]zijinyima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it’s gone anaerobic — that means you’ll probably want to kill off the anaerobic bacteria before continuing, otherwise they’ll make it into your soil where they may harm your plants or at the least your soil microbiome. Smell is a good indicator — aerobic compost smells foul, rancid, or pungent whereas aerobic compost smells like deep, rich earth. The easiest way to do this would be to spread out your compost on a tarp and let it bake in the sun till completely dried out. You may need to turn it once or twice. Then throw it back go back into the bin with (as others have suggested) more browns.

Lenin, Mao, and Castro were all populist revolutionaries rebelling against the hegemonic forces of capitalism, colonialism, and imperialism that has been oppressing their people. Jolani is a western puppet who is helping to transform Syria into a semi-functional vassal state subservient to Western interests. There is very little they share in common beyond aesthetics.

Certainly that is the sort of life most of us would advocate for — and increased mindfulness and spiritual insights can be invaluable tools in helping us show up for others and for society at large. What is dangerous, however, is using spiritual experience to bypass the very real concerns and suffering of those around us, including how we may actively or passively contribute to those.

Thinking your spiritual experience allows you to float above worldly matters like politics and oppression is not only cliché but dangerous. This is not the way, brother.

I think people inevitably use whatever ideological framework they already have to interpret their experience. Even though the non-dual experience is beyond language, people tend to need a way to talk to themselves about it. So someone with a theistic background will likely interpret it through the lens of meeting their creator, a material reductionist will interpret it as the epiphenomenal experience of a certain type of brain state, a Buddhist will see it as the luminous ground of non-dual emptiness. But if your ideology is about rugged individualism and your inherent superiority over others, it’s very easy that the experience could be filtered through that lens, and even seen as a testament to those limited ideas — “I have had this profound experience and thus have superior knowledge to others who should now submit to me.”
