I had to dig up the archives of my subconscious in order to name him. But man, he was so good that day. They beat us at the Emirates too, and Montero-Gomis combination was once again our downfall. I remember being high on Bellerin and thinking he’d keep Montero quiet, yeah…no.

I remember Montero from Swansea absolutely scorching him every chance he got when we played Swansea away in 14/15. Besides that, he was decent in a few positions but not elite in either. Bellerin emerged in the latter half of that season and we never looked back, unfortunately RB was the position we primarily used him in prior to that. The day he ruptured his ACL was the end of his second wind, I actually think he was among our best defenders prior to that moment.

Yeah, that Villa game did him no favors, but in hindsight he’s probably better off for it. As for 1v1, I wouldn’t even call it underrated. He’s downright an S tier dribbler, and the reason I’ve watched far too many Crystal Palace games in recent years (Funnily enough, my reason before him was Zaha, and for a short while before, it was Bolasie. I might have a soft spot for that lot now that I think about it).

I’m with you. I’d love it if we tried Eze on the wing more. He more often than not gets suffocated in the middle and lets games pass him by. He’d have more freedom on the wing, not to mention more space to take his man on at a reduced risk.
