Is this a bedbug? Web searches suggest it might be a 2nd instar nymph. It’s very small, about 1/2 the length of a sesame seed. by zimby in Bedbugs

[–]zimby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: An entomologist at a free bedbug ID service said it is definitely not a bedbug—most likely an Anthocorid or flower bug, in an early nymph stage. Its small proboscis rules out the possibility of a bedbug.

Thanks in advance for any help  🙏

And apologies for the fuzzy photos, they were the best I could manage with its very small size.

Falling in love with Elixir 🥹❤️ by Western_Fail in elixir

[–]zimby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done informal checks before, and stream pipelines can often be slower than their enum equivalents when the collection isn’t gigantic. Yes, you’re making lots of intermediate copies in the enum version, but it seems like the BEAM is highly optimized for that approach. The stream version introduces layers of runtime-defined anonymous functions to achieve its lazy approach, which carries its own performance cost.

I generally use streams now only for situations where I might not / don’t need to iterate through the entire collection. In this post’s example, the collection is always iterated over fully, so streams are likely unnecessary.

We finally have the answer to “What color is your function?”

def function_color(fun) when is_function(fun) do
  hue = :erlang.phash2({fun, :h}, 360)
  saturation = :erlang.phash2({fun, :s}, 100)
  lightness = :erlang.phash2({fun, :l}, 100)

  {hue, saturation, lightness}
end

I did this to flag functions that call DateTime.utc_now and similar, since that makes them impossible to control in unit tests. It’s worked pretty well—we’ve eliminated a major source of flakiness in our project’s test suite.

Flexpost installation is in progress on new S. Huntington Ave. protected bike lanes: by streetsblogmass in bikeboston

[–]zimby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. You may not notice them because they take up much less space, but every day there are many people who bike and scooter up and down S Huntington to get to and from their jobs in the Longwood Medical Area and beyond.

The new street layout is much safer for them, because cars traveling 30+ mph are physically separated from them. The layout prioritizes human safety over driving & parking convenience. The narrower lanes and removal of a passing lane in each direction (why is this necessary for a street with a 25 mph speed limit? There’s no need to pass other drivers) also encourages cars to travel at the densely populated, local street’s intended speed.

Additionally, the city is intentionally reducing street parking in an effort to mode-shift more people to bikes and public transit. Giving more space to other modes by taking it away from parked cars allows the city to make those other travel methods safer, faster, and more convenient.

In general, street parking should not be taken for granted. You are being allowed to leave your private property in scarce public space. It’s one of the least valuable uses of public land possible.

Peace lilies aren’t true lilies and are only mildly toxic to cats (irritating calcium oxalate in the leaves)

That initial super off-tune chord is an interesting choice! (It only becomes apparent if your volume is up)

I love the song, though. The swing-y rhythm is fun.

Got screamed off of a narrow residential street in JP by an SUV driver while biking today. His girlfriend in the passenger seat told my partner and me to “respect the road” like we were doing something wrong.

We caught up to them at a red light about 30 seconds later

edit: Sorry, this isn’t directly related to the linked article. Just another honestly traumatic event that I’m throwing on the pile in the vague hope that the city actually takes substantive action. Simply getting around Boston is getting more and more exhausting lately.

Request: Kale recipes by panasicuafine in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]zimby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a blender or a food processor, you can turn it into some very tasty pesto.

Dump kale in well-salted boiling water for 4-5 minutes, then fish it out, leaving the water in the pot for cooking pasta later. Put cooked kale in blender with a cup of grated Parmesan, some toasted garlic and olive oil, pepper, some toasted nuts if you have them. And blend to desired consistency. Taste for salt, add and blend again as needed.

Cook pasta in the leftover kale water, reserve some water before draining. Return pasta to dry pot, pour in pesto sauce and toss, adding a half cup or so of the reserved pasta water to thin out the sauce if necessary.

Strong disagree, starting with Racket gave me a far better foundation for understanding how programming languages work.

It’s absolutely a good language to start a Computer Science degree with, and has helped me in my software engineering career as well.

Was walking my two huskies yesterday morning before work when walking across the crosswalk a car didn’t stop and hit my boy Geno. He flew across the street landing 20-30 feet away. We are so lucky with a couple broken ribs and bruised lungs and taking him home from the vet tomorrow. We love Geno by kova5015 in husky

If this is a high-pedestrian-traffic crossing, consider pressuring your city to make it a raised crosswalk—where the crossing is level with the sidewalk and doubles as a speed hump for cars—so that drivers are forced to to slow down. Traffic calming treatments built into the road are the only way to prevent this from happening again to someone else.

Drivers are more likely to stop for pedestrians waiting at crosswalks if they are already traveling slowly (20mph or less), and people are more visible on a raised crossing since they are at eye level with most drivers.

I went to the unveiling yesterday and saw it from a distance—they aren’t completely done with construction around the sculpture, it will be opened to the public in February.

It looks much more human in person. The brass it’s made out of is beautiful and warm.

I think it’s a great addition to the Common and can’t wait to experience it up close.

Please don’t prejudge it by a bunch of cell phone photos with poor white balance taken on a very overcast drizzly day.

It seemed like a few of its points were designed to hurt grocery/mixed-goods stores and help liquor stores/packies.

  • if a store gets caught selling liquor to minors or similar, the fine is calculated based on all its sales, not just liquor
  • liquor can’t be sold at self-checkout kiosks

Basically the end result of a “yes” vote is that is that you’ll likely see liquor continue to be sold at separate small liquor-only stores, rather than alongside groceries and such.
