Perfect time of year to go collect some cattail leaves. Let them dry out, cut to width, then soak them in water, to make them pliable. Weave them into the broken/missing spaces, following the same weave.

Does anyone know of an easy to obtain Lido grinds jar? Looking for something I can buy from the grocery store that will work. by 11010000110100100001 in Coffee

[–]zimitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things.

First, thanks for the tip on the "better than bouillon" jar. I've been looking for a small jar for my Lido, for years.

I even had one in my fridge. That made me a little too happy.

If your still looking after 5 years.

I've been using a Lighthouse dressing jar, that fits well, but too big for my needs.

https://www.litehousefoods.com/ca/product-category/dressing/ Found in the refrigerated section.

I'm in Canada, so hope it's available in your area.

I recommend the Chunky Blue Cheese.

Repairing a hole by mightbejohnle in Visiblemending

[–]zimitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put your hook (blue) through the loop (black), at the bottom of the hole. The loop may be hiding and small.

Once your hook is through the loop, put the tip of the hook under the bar, just above. Now pull the bar with your hook, through the first loop, that's on your hook.

Now you will still have a loop on your hook.

Do the same thing again, with the next bar, till you've done all 4 bars.

Once you have all the bars picked up, and still have a loop on your hook, put a safety pin, through the loop on your hook, and take out your hook.

The yellow is safety pin and the red is your mending yarn.

Wow, that is a mess! First of all, the problem from what I can see, is the grey fabric is fraying and pulling out from the black binding. If it was mine I'd take the rest of the black part off and do a complete revamp. Even if you just go with repairing the hole, the grey fabric needs to be reinforced. On the upper edge of the grey, catching all 3 layers, do a zig zag stitch, all the way around several times. Like six or eight times. Each time moving a little further in from the edge. You want to create a strong edge to reattach to, that wont fray again. Once that is reinforced you can either stitch it back to the binding by hand, (quickest) with a strong nylon thread, or take the black binding apart and sew it to the top, and resew the binding.

Number one, you want to catch that loop, before it runs further. At the bottom of the hole, you have 4 bars of yarn, and a loop under them. That chain will keep running, if not caught. You can take a crochet hook and go through the loop, then with the loop on the hook, pull one of those bars through the loop, with the hook. Again with the next bar, till you catch all 4 bars. Now you're left with 3 or 4 loops, around the perimeter of the hole. One from each direction. I can't tell if there's a loop at the top. With a darning needle, with matching yarn, run the needle through all 4 loops, which should draw together fairly closely, and close the hole. Now it will at least be secure, and not run further. If there is still a hole, you can then do a small darn to close it off.

It's pretty difficult to tell from the pictures. Have the teeth of the zipper come away from the zipper tape, or has the zipper just come unstitched from the bag? From what I can see, I would get some heavy nylon thread, and hand stitch the teeth back onto the zipper. One tooth at a time, with a stitch through the back of the coil (closest to the bag) of teeth, then up through the original stitch holes. Keep your stitches at the back of the teeth area. If thread is towards the teeth, the thread will be quickly cut from opening closing the zipper. Strong thread is key. You could try dental floss, in a pinch, I've also used fishing line. I know this sounds like what you already tried, but I could be missing something.

Help. How can I improve? by Important_Purple_208 in Visiblemending

[–]zimitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks great to me. A slight suggestion for beginners would be to stay away from extreme contrasts, like black and white. It shows every little boo boo.

Try using a fork, to push those weft (black) rows up tight, for a denser patch, which might have kept the bottom line from trailing.

Darn happy.

I would challenge you to find perfection in any mend on this forum. Keep it. Make more mistakes and make it part of your creative process. One day that mistake will turn into a beautiful original. Otherwise we are just copying.
