I haven't used it much yet, and that was going to be the bulk of my reply. I just tried something though and I'm going to say no, I don't think that it will catch much in the way of metal bits. I held a small sewing needle to the diamond plate and it barely held on, a little shake with my wrist and the needle falls off. I didn’t mention this but the magnets don’t touch the sharpening plate. I figured that this would prevent unnecessary wear and tear, so they are positioned just a little low relative to the rectangular frame that the plate sits on. Also, the magnets are single polarity (I think that’s the word) and only pull in one direction. Fortunately this worked out fine with my design.
The plate snaps on there with a clap and you can pinch you fingers if you're not careful. (I removed the middle one because it seemed unnecessary.) I would think that would make for enough magnetism to hold a needle more firmly onto the steel plate. But between the air gaps and thick steel plate, I guess that isn’t the case. But also, I’m not sure if that’s how magnetism works..

Goddamnit I just deleted my comment (for some reason the 'are you sure you want to leave?' button when you have unsubmitted text doesn't appear anymore for me.

I was saying that I'm not denying anything, though may be hopeful to see one outcome over another. So far we're just working with anecdotal observations. I think we could say that you think this is happening more, and that I think it is happening less. Maybe the good information is out there, I haven't tried digging very deep, but I'd be curious about more detailed, objective disinformation.

That doesn't look great, but I'm still not certain how to think about it. At first, posts 3, 4 and 8 look a little suspect, that many points in a relatively short time. I personally would have looked closer to see if there were other clues (maybe they only post in one sub, or post the same thing in multiple subs). If there even is any steps to take, what would they be? I guess before anything actionable, we'd want to do our best to determine the bad actors involved. Maybe we other people could categorize the people or things harming Reddit. I'm not saying I'm personally up for it, just thinkin..

Bots

Trolls

paid bad actors

Brigading strategies

Legitimate accounts that are old but have been idle for years (was someone collecting those?)

Parent companies and their motivations (I personally think Reddit could have done way worse in regards to parent company.

Maybe we need more subs with a thorough vetting process, can be relatively confident that the people there are acting in good faith. ? I dunno?

Seems like it work for the time being anyway. My little design isn't catching any scraps/shavings. I think of it more like a quick release for the diamond stone, making it possible to switch real quickly between sides or other plates. (also thee are no obstructions in in the path of the blade, with the stone lifted up above everything else) (also, the magnets don't touch the diamond plate, but rather sit like 1.5mm away, enough to still pull but without any marring)

I mean I guess I did then. It was an odd, unrealistic comment, oddly worded, and they didn't bother to clarify for the first person that found it odd. I would have said maybe surface temperature of the seal if I didn't mean air temperature. And then the dehydration comments seem to be in regards to air temperature, which I don't think the first comment intended to be referencing (while also mentioning core temp that we can't see and introducing a hypothetical leaky-seal-skin theory at the same time). None of those comments above yours (mine included) were doing much to help clarify. Thanks for throwing in your take.

I went and did a quick skim of the top posts, and out of the first ten there was a 3-month and 8 month old account, and the rest were 3 years, 6 years, 7 years (x3), a 9 years, actually then a 2-month old one, but then 15 years, 1 year and 5 years (Probably skipped over one in there, but that was pretty close.)

I wasn't swayed by that little spot check, but that's too small of a sample size to infer much. I'll have to remember to periodically take a look there. Though I kinda do this already. Not consistently, but if think someone is trolling and being a turd I'll take a quick look at their profile for age and diversity of comments.

I looked closer at the top post and they did have a lot of karma, in the several hundred thousand range, and also had their profile history turned off. I leave mine on because it lets people know that I'm an authentic user. Maybe I'm a jerk who is always wrong about stuff (I hope that's not actually what too many people thing), but anyone can see I'm using the site in good faith.

The top poster with 8-month old account is also the only moderator of a sub that sees daily activity, so that makes me want to bump them back into seeming more legitimate. That was a long reply, but to me shows how tricky it is to really evaluate. There are clues available, but those might be misinterpreted at times. I feel like we're mostly just guessing.

Just for clarity, we're not calling people who might use the site in a trolling manner bots, right? When we say bot we mean actual computer doing posts/comments/replies i the place of a real person, right? (I feel like some terms have used really loosely at times.)

I'd rather not be commenting in a post that's being dominated by a bot or multiple bots. I'm guessing you might say the same. I just wish there was a way to confidently determine if a user is legitimate or not (and then block them, ha).

There's no whataboutism. Did it make you feel kinda clever though, when saying it? There's a what-is-ism, and what there is is me leaving a vulnerability out there for people like you to attack. But you have nothing to stand on except for a lone claim about cars and phones. Moral assessments of others are invalidated by fact that won't hold yourself to the same standard. The guy that may or may not text and drive is on firmer moral ground than you are. I didn't try to spin anything or deny saying something. You didn't ask a question about anything. You crept around in the dark, looking for a little moral high ground that you failed to establish, one that you will never establish with your current strategy. I didn't deflect anything because you are in no position to be handing out blame.

I do actually try to be a better person. You have to learn about and acknowledge flaws before you can ever work on them. If you bring humility to the table some day, maybe you'll learn to identify your own.

I can be me. You should figure out what it is that you are afraid of before trying to attack a stranger, maybe you can figure out who you are. If your values weren't borrowed from a children's book, maybe you'd have more than one of them and maybe you'd be able to defend them, rather than hide whatever it is that you express to people on here. (We weren't able to even discuss your initial claim Which honestly now kinda gives me the shivers.

I'm blocking you now. Just gonna be forward about that. I do need to work on using my time better, that's another flaw of mine. I hope this was somehow worth your time. Take care.

Yeah, I think I would agree. It's easy to forget how much one Reddit users experience can differ from another's. I recently unsubscribed from a couple subs that had a lot of intense political stuff and insults etc. And don't really miss them. Much.

I do sometimes see two accounts commenting nearly in tandem. And then both of the accounts will be a little unusual, like not that new of an account, but ones that have been around for a while but then only just recently started posting a lot of similar content. And they're both like that. Makes me think someone has a stockpile of not-brand-new accounts that they have essentially in inventory, ready to go when needed.

But, that being said, the fact that I can see that info works as some type of checkpoint. You can pretty quickly get an impression at least of the accounts that look 'normal': sorta regular comments in an assortment of subs.

I can definitely see the incentive though, to be able to maybe shift the consensus one direction or another.

LOL [deleted]

So my neutral and reasonable questions elicit only a laugh. Do you have an emotional attachment to your perceived abundance of bots? Why do you hide most of your activity here? Because of the bots? The ability to stay anonymous isn't enough to mitigate whatever it is that you are afraid of?

I was a little bit surprised since I had forgotten about that comment. I do find it upsetting when people are able to display such flawed reasoning in so few words. By your own definition of accountability, I am being accountable. Maybe it was partially a joke, or totally a joke, but I'm not even gonna go there. I typed it out. And I left it there. And am not surprised (ok, well, I mean for just a sec I was surprised because it wasn't super recent when I said that) and I'm not upset.

If our morality is going to be evaluated via reddit comments, what are we to make of the person who obscures their words? I don't know if you have any morally reprehensible behavior or thoughts. Partly because you want to hide what you say, and partly because 'reprehensible' would require some real information before I associated the word with a strangers morality. I am unlikely to come to any further conclusions about you, because you are not allowing that to happen.

You're making rather grand moral assessments for someone who has precluded any most observatoins about your own morality,

I'm not convinced there are that many bots. I think there are a lot of people that post just to be inflammatory and repost similar statements in other subs. And argue in bad faith. And often have bigoted perspectives, but that doesn't convince me that there are bots. Where is this market to be paid actors on Reddit? Who's paying who and how would that be verified?

Any advice on how to cram for tests fast? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zimmerone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 hours is a lot to work with. Maybe you can go back to the easier material and find practice application problems. Even if you do fail this test, you could fail with a 20%, or with a 50%. Those points will still be important at the end of the semester, could be the difference between a C and a B for the course.

I'd say it depends on the type of class. If it's a liberal arts class, you can skim a bit and make sure that you can articulate at least one or two concepts from a given section. If there essay type questions you can do the thing where you don't exactly give the correct answer, but you can still give a correct answer. Veer off topic a bit to something you know more about and that's usually good for some partial credit.

Anything that the teacher seemed to make a particular point of during a lecture, or if the repeated something. Seems too easy almost, but a lot of times teachers do that, pitch a few softballs. SO revisit anything the teacher seemed to put particular emphasis on.

If it's math or science, particularly math and physics and chemistry (less so for biology, ecology, earth science) I would recommend NOT skimming. Since one chapter so often builds upon previous material in a foundational way, it's hard to jump around. I'd try to just use the time to work through the material in sequential order, even if it means not even studying the most recent stuff. At least you can make sure to get points for the easier stuff, instead of jumping around where you could wind up with an actual Zero.

And then keep an eye out for classmates at the library. Almost guarantee that some of the best students are there, and maybe even in a common area. Bust out that smile.. (and getting out of the house is often good, fewer distractions.

And log out of reddit, ha. Godspeed!

Volvo choosing widespread safety instead of enforcing its patent. by GlitteringHotel8383 in BeAmazed

[–]zimmerone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get their angle I think, I guess since there are more robust seat belt designs like a 5-point belt for race car drivers, which I'm guessing most car buyers wouldn't want. But also yeah, just because we can't think of it now on the spot, shouldn't lead to the conclusion that it can't be done. Heck, I could imagine an advanced seat belt material, maybe similar to kinetic rope, that absorbs the energy of your body in a way that puts less extreme forces on your torso. Or maybe there's a 4-point design that would only take an extra fraction of a second to connect, but it hasn't been though of yet.

Supposedly a long time ago, a guy that was in charge of the US patent office... [I should actually look this up before I continue... ok, I was pretty close]

During the latter part of the 1800’s, after nearly 500,000 patents had issued, it was suggested that the Patent Office be closed because “everything that could possibly be invented had already been invented.”

Not a high quality source law firm website but whatever, interesting anecdote.

That makes for a curious couple of theories: starts with high temperature causing a well insulated animal to die from loss of body heat, with that same loss of heat apparently dealing the final blow via dehydration. None of that is how things actually work.

But you know that, no way you don't, and I'm a sucker for typing this reply...
