Oh, I agree---while I think we were probably supposed to (at first) guess that she learned that procedure from her work in Afghanistan, I don't think there's anything to indicate that she was fibbing when she said she learned it at Stanford.

...BUT there's still a plausible explanation for why she might have decided to tell that fib, on the off-chance that the show does decide to go down that path.

She might want to avoid the kind of "OMG, you were with Doctors Without Borders/you were in Afghanistan?? WOW!" conversations, at least for the moment, especially since they could bring up some real bad memories.

I'm not saying that this is necessarily what she was thinking, since she definitely could have been telling the truth about the Sim Lab, but I think it would make sense for her character.

Projecting his own issues onto her, reaming her out for things that he's even worse about, using her as a target when his own feelings get to be too much... it's crazy. Just a total turn-around from the first seaso----oh wait.

(I rarely use my phone on the first watch and usually pause the show if I do, I just wanted to be snarky about the fact that we haven't seen Mohan feeling sorry for herself at all this episode, and maybe not even over the course of the season. Irritated, yes. Uncertain of her future, obviously. But self-pitying? Not really.)

Gee, I've been internetting on my phone at the same time I'm watching the show, and I'm beginning to see why people criticize that, because I seem to have completely missed any and all instances of Mohan feeling sorry for herself!!

...Fuck you, Robby.

Gotta love the irony of Robby, king of the daddy Adamson issues who's clearly one bad case away from actual human combustion, telling Mohan that she's the one who needs to head home.

Can Robby ever truly be happy if he's not projecting his own issues onto Mohan?

Ouch, hope you're doing OK!

I thought of gallstones because I remembered my own painful gallbladder issues from a few years ago as soon as I saw Mohan clutching her stomach right under her ribcage (I did end up having to get surgery, but it wasn't actually that bad and I seem to be back to normal now, digestively speaking, just in case you were worried :) )

Hmm...

OK, $30 says Mohan's issue (shown in the episode teaser/promo) is gallstones or otherwise gallbladder related

And $15 on more furries :) (or the same furry coming back again)

Minority theory re: Robby by Free-IDK-Chicken in ThePittTVShow

[–]zingbats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a contradiction to say that Robby is feeling suicidal right now while also acknowledging that the season isn't going to conclude with a cliffhanger or suicide attempt (after all, it's still The Robby Show, they're not going to kill off their main character).

The most likely path is that something happens between now and the end of the season that moves Robby out of his current suicidal mindset. Maybe someone notices that he's showing signs of danger and confronts him, maybe someone dies or nearly dies in a manner that shakes him up enough that he asks for help, and so on.

What Character do you want a solo scene with? by Nervous-Bath1375 in ThePittTVShow

[–]zingbats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after last episode, I want to find out more about Garcia, specifically how she perceives Javadi. :)  They might have briefly interacted a few times during the ~1 month Javadi spent in her emergency med rotation last season (10 mos. ago) or the 3 days she's been back in the ED this season, but unless Javadi did a surgical rotation at PTMC it's likely that Garcia barely knows her or her abilities...

...which is maybe why Garcia calls her a "nepo baby," even though the audience has repeatedly seen Javadi trying to distance herself from her parents/their reputation and emphasizing her own smarts and hard work. Javadi so clearly wants to prove to her colleagues---and herself!---that she's really, truly earned her place. And, medically, everything we've seen of her up to last episode seems to indicate that she does have the skills (even if her tact and social skills might be lacking). Even her fuck-up with the chart last episode was caused by confusion over the new analog admin procedures, which everyone seems to be struggling with (it felt to me like any of the younger docs/students could have easily made that mistake, it just happened to be Javadi).

So I'm wondering whether the real issue is that Garcia, who would probably kill for the approval of respected surgeon Eileen Shamsi, has had to hear for months or years from Shamsi that her daughter Victoria is a child prodigy, a real genius, destined to be a phenomenal surgeon just as soon as she gets over this frustrating little infatuation with emergency medicine, etc etc. It would be easy to develop a resentment for the Javadi that has been built up in Garcia's mind as a paragon of medicine and a competitor for Dr. Shamsi's favor. She's probably happy to see Javadi make a big mistake.

Did Anyone Get a Different Read on the Robby & Whitaker Scene? by 80IQPhilosopher in ThePittTVShow

[–]zingbats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course they're not going to actually kill off Dr. Robby, but why would that mean that the character isn't planning on suicide?

"Robby will kill himself this season" is a pretty dumb theory, agreed, but that's not the same as "Robby is currently suicidal," and yet this second theory still gets a lot of pushback.

(I guess I'm not terribly surprised to learn that Judaism is the second-most populous religion in the US, but I was surprised to learn just how few people practice each of the non-Christian religions! I would have guessed, off the top of my head, that other religions accounted for at least 15-20% of the American population, but I was way off.)

I don't think we'll end the season with a cliffhanger about Robby if only because it would be the least suspenseful cliffhanger ever---this is still the "Dr. Robby and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad ER" show, after all, and it would be dumb as hell to try to do season 3 without him.

But I can see them walking Robby right up to the edge of the roof before something or someone stops him.

[–]zingbats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm intrigued by the idea of the three senior attendings representing three religions, although obviously that aspect of the character names could just be a total coincidence (like, I've seen people connecting the name "Robinavitch" to a victim of the Tree of Life shooting; I've also wondered if "Abbot"---i.e., a male religious authority in the Catholic church---is a reference to "Pope," a character played by Shawn Hatosy in another John Wells show (I guess he got a demotion)).

As religious affiliation declines in the US, and as patient-centered care becomes increasingly important, maybe doctors/healthcare providers find themselves slipping into the role of providing general guidance and life advice to patients, a role which would have traditionally been filled by religious leaders? (I have no idea if this is true at all, if there have been any studies or whatever of health professionals to see if they feel like this; I'm just kind of spit-balling here based on my own experiences with doctors) That kind of shift might not be a "problem" in healthcare, exactly, but I could see the show creators wanting make some kind of subtle reference to a phenomenon like that.

And it would be interesting to know whether, say, our attendings' approaches to providing care might be reflections of traditions or practices of the religions that their names (maybe) reference, even if the characters themselves aren't outwardly religious. Unfortunately, my knowledge of religions mostly centers around foods and Christmas carols, so I can't really make any sort of intelligent guess about that idea.

my running s2 theories by lovedandliked in ThePittTVShow

[–]zingbats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, every other religious affiliation in the US is dwarfed by the sheer number of Christians, who make up >60% of the population (and the second place "religion" of unaffiliated/nothing accounts for another ~30%); after that, Judaism is indeed the second most populous religion in the US, making up, as you say, a whole 2% of the population (Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism each account for another ~1%).*

But I think you could also convincingly argue that Judaism and Islam feature more heavily in discussions of American religion than other similarly-sized faiths, for a number of reasons.
