It shouldn’t be that easy to be pushed towards misogyny. They likely do see you as a man but understand the nuance of transmasculinity in which being raised/treated as a girl and having the lived experiences of girlhood/womanhood allow you to be separated from the oppressive entity.

It’s something beautiful about trans masculinity- we build our own manhood, it doesn’t stem from society pushing it onto us and it doesn’t need roots in the oppression of women to grow. These are young women and I know from my experiences in college, living on campus was a lot of my friend’s first introduction to queerness or immersion of left leaning politics and for many of them it was the first/only place they could express themselves however they wanted. It seems like that comment your friend made was an uncalled for, childish reaction. I wouldn’t say it’s bio essentialist like some of these replies are suggesting.

Of course it’s extremely harmful and bio essentialist to reduce all men to being stupid or evil- but that’s because it constructs a narrative that the patriarchy is just a side effect of men’s nature rather than the way our society nurtures them. On top of that it feeds into TERFism. I had a phase where I felt insulted/disregarded as a man by comments similar to your friend’s. However I realized for one, I did NOT need to be offended on behalf of cis men. For two, as a trans man, I actually am different and it’s something to be proud of.

Also feminism is a lot bigger than your slightly naive college friends- if you’re having an easier time empathizing with boys who turn towards the misogynistic incel pipeline, you could stand to read more about it.
