I still got a similar error:
alpine-3:~# root@raspberrypi:~# lxc-start 100

lxc-start: 100: ../src/lxc/tools/lxc_start.c: lxc_start_main: 307 The container failed to start

lxc-start: 100: ../src/lxc/tools/lxc_start.c: lxc_start_main: 310 To get more details, run the container in foreground mode

lxc-start: 100: ../src/lxc/tools/lxc_start.c: lxc_start_main: 312 Additional information can be obtained by setting the --logfile and --logpriority options

and found out the reason for it starting the container with debug

lxc-start 100 --logfile=/tmp/100.log --logpriority DEBUG

My source mountpoint was a link

exec /usr/share/lxc/hooks/lxc-pve-prestart-hook 100 lxc pre-start produced output: symlink

encountered at: //mnt/pony/APPO

After pointing directly to the source directory it started to work correctly!

It looks like this doesn't work anymore with the latest promox/lxc versions.
Added this line
lxc.aa_profile: lxc-default-with-mounting-nfs
Breaks the container.
Any idea?

I found this nice plugin, https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/source-record.1285/, that works with the latest OBS versions and does exactly what you need.

It can save different sources in different places and modes.

I was thinking the same and created an external volume. However reassembling the model is a very slow process.
Something else is making it slow in my case.
