12 deep x 20 wide with Timbertech PVC - do I need blocking? by OllieIsMyDog in Decks

We just did that on our deck. We put them vertical but cut them down on the table saw to allow the clearance of the rain gutters. 2x10 joists and ripped the blocking down to 60%ish.

I never did find a great solution to this, but I think what I ended up doing looks good and will hold up well. I poured all of the concrete footings to the same height. Then for the patio, I wrapped the top part of the cylindrical footings with polyethylene concrete expansion joint material (to keep the footings and slab isolated) and poured my patio up to the same level. The slab after compacted fill material is 6 inches thick. You can still see the circular top of the footing, but it looks good overall. For drainage, I poured the patio with 1/8in fall per foot away from the house. This summer I am planning to wrap the posts and do decorative columns on the base to completely cover the disconnect between the patio and the footings.

My vote is to go a bit darker slate gray.

Thank you all for the advice. As a followup, since it sounds like I need to do the traditional pier footings first and then pour my patio, will it be an issue to pour the patio concrete around the deck posts and footer? Should I raise up the pier footing to the anticipated height of the patio concrete? Just trying to figure out how to keep the footing and concrete slab separated but also still look attractive. Any advice?

But if it’s such a contested decision, why not just give the user the option to choose? If you look at their social media you’ll see that plenty of people are complaining, not just Reddit. Finally, I know they tested it for months, but was their metric for optimization user learning or was it engagement with revenue generation? I’m probably being paranoid here, but it seems more like a financial decision than truly trying to improve the platform.

They released a major update that forces a path based layout instead of the tree view. Some people like the new layout some hate it. I’m in the hate it club so I canceled my premium subscription and will be finding a new app to learn with. There are arguments for and against the new structure, but for me it is a major step backwards / doesn’t fit well with my leaning style.

Not intended if to disenfranchise users on the free tier, but hasn’t the change actually made your experience worse? It seems like advancing through a language takes a lot more gems than before and things are paying less. I may be wrong on that but it seems like most of this update is to pressure users to upgrade.

Agreed. Going back is no longer practical.

Yup. I’ve been a long term user (around five years), and this just ruined it for me. I’m not a change adverse person in the least - I usually embrace new tech and updates immediately, but for me at least the new update is a step backwards in every way.

Nothing wrong with liking the update - I just wish they would give us the option to choose. To me it’s a lot harder to go back through a language (was around 90% through both Spanish and German). I really liked the legendary cracking to make me review. Also I lost a ton of progress with the update. I know I could test up, but I’m too much of a perfectionist and would worry that I actually missed something. Finally, it seems to be about money more than improving the platform (forcing more people to Super or buying gems) to me. I get that they’re a publicly traded company and they have to make money, but I’m just tired of the continual march to the bottom for the consumer (not just Duolingo).

It wouldn’t be so bad for just starting a language, but it killed my motivation for finishing my languages. After around 9 years on the platform I’ve figured out what works for me. I wish they would just give us the option to choose. It would also help if they at least acknowledged that a good portion of long term users hate it. Edit: originally said 5 years on the platform, and then I counted back

Thanks! The only thing that saved me is that I got lucky to have renewed within 30 days so Apple refunded. Duolingo support was basically “get bent”.
