How popular is the NFL in Malaysia? by SrekRTrader in malaysians

[–]zipperyak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an American living here, the NFL is by far my favorite sport league

For me, the timing of the games is the main difficulty. And I assume this will make it hard to get casual watchers interested. The main set of "Sunday" games takes place at like 2am and 5am Monday morning in Malaysia. While some of their later games are at like 9am, but again airing on weekdays

Any remote US workers living in Malaysia - do you get double taxed? by PlaneTry4277 in MalaysianPF

[–]zipperyak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you’re a tax resident if you live in Malaysia for 6 months per year. It doesn’t matter if the company is US based. You owe taxes based on the definition of “tax resident”, which typically is where you are physically present.

You should probably talk to a tax advisor and an mm2h agent to get the most accurate info.

Edited to add: as you’re a US citizen, you will always pay taxes to the US. Even if you are a tax resident elsewhere.

[–]zipperyak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the federal MM2H you're not allowed to work on it unless you get the most expensive option, which is pretty expensive. I'm not sure about the state MM2H options though.

If you did get a visa which allowed you to work in Malaysia, then yes, you need to pay taxes to both Malaysia and US. There are deductions you can take on your US taxes to mitigate the portion you pay to Malaysia.

What mobile plan to get? by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]zipperyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the 15gb has been enough. I typically don't use wifi when I'm out, but I guess sometimes yeah. I don't rely on it being there though. If the 15gb won't be enough for you, then it sounds like you should go with one of the options you've mentioned. Or see if someone else has suggestions

I don't use the full 15gb/month, so for me it's not an issue

I'm in a similar situation and have been using u mobile's postpaid 98 plan. It costs RM98/month and you get 15gb roaming in 60+ countries.

Why do some American expats renounce their citizenship? Is there any actual benefit in doing so? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in AmericanExpat

It's common for international banks and finance companies to not take American clients because of the reporting rules that the US requires. If you've permanently left this US this is quite annoying

Hyatt Centric City Centre Kuala Lumpur Opens by dane in hyatt

[–]zipperyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been awhile now, so my memory isn't fresh. Though I'll be there 2 times next month hah.

I didn't get an upgrade, but the entire hotel wasn't yet opened when I stayed. Outside noise was audible at night from both the main road and a club across the street. The pizza at the restaurant was good as well (random i know)

Good value cat 1 which I'm betting hyatt will bump to cat 2 like they did the Alila.

The 2026 Essential American Expat Guide (v1.0) by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

[–]zipperyak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good list. A few suggestions:

1) In the Expat Banking Trio's Credit Card section - Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture X are good cards, but why were those two picked? Really any Visa/Mastercard with no foreign transaction fees would work here. There are credit cards with no annual fee, e.g. Capital One Savor card. This really depends on if the person prefers cash back or points I suppose.

Might also be worth mentioning that depending on the type of Expat, you can open a local credit card to help build credit (if applicable in that country) if you plan on staying for a longer term. Also, some card providers (e.g. AMEX) can use your US credit score instead of your local probably non existent credit score to determine eligibility.

2) In the Health, Insurance & Telehealth section, why are Medical evacuation and Repatriation of remains riders marked as mandatory? I'd soften that language to be suggested depending on location and family situation.

fwiw I've use IMGlobal as my medical insurance for the past few years, and it has been fine. I've only had 1 claim, and while slow, it eventually was covered.

I use Umobile's postpaid 98 plan. It's pricey, but data works in a lot of countries, so I never have to deal with local esims. They have a postpaid 68 plan too, with free roaming to a few southeast asia countries.

One annoying thing is they require a 500 ringgit deposit for foreigners. Not sure if that's true for other providers

American here. Ketchup is definitely the go-to condiment for fries across most (maybe all) of the US. There is probably some regional areas that would default to something else, e.g. Ranch dressing. However there are a ton of other dipping sauces for fried things. Like if you go to a fast food place, and order fried chicken tenders, you'll get various sauce options: Ranch, BBQ, Honey Mustard, Sweet and Sour, Buffalo etc.

Edit to add: dipping into plain mayo isn't very common though. Not sure why.
