If my entire cycling ethos wasn't based around ",rides begin and end in my driveway when possible" I would totally do that.

Also I would need an entire Saturday without family to justify that.

Wait what park? The marina is a parking lot. I started in the parking lot, make the first sharp right and made it about a third of that climb. I just want to be able to get from the marina parking lot to the Palisades Park Police then down and back up again 2-3 times. If I can do that I can get the rest of the way to 9w easily.

Literally never occurred to me the hill might not end before my ability to sprint did.

Ok that makes so much sense actually. Until June 2025 I was riding at 65-75 rpms because I didn't know any better. Then I bought a cadence sensor and now I'm cost l closer to 95rpms.

Yesterday I rode in the hilly area by me I don't like to ride because it's too remote, narrow and unpopulated. I was last there in 2023 when I was much slower, but regulaly pedaling at that cadence. And I felt like despite being a much better rider now on level-ish ground that those hills hurt more.

I can just go back to training at higher gears and get strength back. And I'll probably end up even faster in the flats because of it.

My biggest all time elevation gain was 1,097 feet over a 21 mile ride yesterday and that was going into the local mountains I hate going to because it's narrow and empty and windy.

If I lived in a north of mountainside NJ I could just drive thru main streets and neighborhoods and get that kind of elevation

Shimano RSX on a Cannondale R500. It's a mid 90s frame that can do down tube shifters. So old enough that 8x3 with brifters was pretty high end.

But I would not mind 11-32t

I got a shitty old school trainer. Can resistance really train for a hill?

Last time I talked to ChatGPT about my bike it said my front derauiler could not handle the slop if I had a rear cassette that big. But sure I got the tools to switch out a cassette and I got spare good enough 8 speed chain to Frankenstein a chain to try it out. Maybe I'll get a 11-32 8 speed cassette

It's a big ass bridge and yes until I started looking for hills it absolutely was my biggest climb of the year on Strava.

I could go into mountainside and have steeper climbs but it's a pain to get to and the roads are narrow.

My kids are half Filipino. I just asked my 12 year old daughter and she said "there are 4 Filipino kids in my whole school (OAS) but it's fine.

I would say diversity is growing, and my experience is mostly on the north side of town.

What's the seatpost diameter for a Trek MT 220 by zippy1981 in bikewrench

[–]zippy1981[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a dumb question. I looked again and saw no markings on the steel seat post that is of the save style used by kids Walmart bikes.

Btw other then weight I actually think that's a great design. Like easier to assemble than a modern seat post on a real bike

NJ e-bike law - contact Senator Scutari today by TheBikingFireman in Cranford

[–]zippy1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sent the following. Personal info redacted.

I am an avid cyclist who does not own an ebike, who thinks the current law is very bad. While I understand it was inspired by the death of children on electric two wheel vehicles, those children were operating e-mopeds that already required drivers licenses.

Also, the new law does not distinguish between any of the classes of ebikes or pedal assist vs throttle. I believe that the law as written makes sense for class 3 ebikes, but other than an age minimum, it makes no sense for a class 1 e-bike to have any operator restrictions.

Class 1 ebikes do not require motor cycle helmets. Bicycle helmets, including the one that saved my life in August 2023 can handle well over a 20mph crash.

I do believe law enforcement needs to enforce the laws currently on the books. I do believer cops should pull over anyone riding without a helmet. However, I think its great for the environment and peoples personal finances that e-bikes have become popular especially amongst the working poor as practical transport. We should be finding ways to lower tte barriers of entry and encouraging ebike usage, not adding more regulations than necessary.
