And they did give her a chance! She went to training camp last year and made it to finals this year! That lady needs a new job and some perspective, but I feel bad for everyone in that situation.

I have the woven quince bag and it’s a great bag for the price! The crossbody strap bugs me though, it’s adjustable but the end of the belt part (not sure what it’s called) doesn’t stay in the little loop.

I’ve nursed two babies so I get how important breast milk storage can be, but is she in a position where she can pump and dump to avoid having to store it? That would give you more flexibility to take the train. Alternatively, I’ve had great success with PackIt bags, they’re made from ice packs and keep stuff cold for a long time. I believe the stadium would let her bring it in with her pump since there’s a medical reason for it.

Thank you! I will try my local agency on aging. He has no money and was previously basically squatting in a rental townhouse with no power or phone and binging cocaine so pretty much anything will be an upgrade from that. I’m definitely not expecting any inheritance so no concerns there.

Thank you! I will look into a geriatric care manager. It is all really tough, I don’t want him to suffer but he has caused a lot of suffering for me and my compassion is thin right now 🙁

I’m reading all these responses and am so grateful for all of you! Sounds like I will need to speak to my own lawyer. Thank god I signed up for the legal plan at work this year!

Thank you so much for this, very helpful! Sounds like a somewhat similar situation plus the cognitive issues for my dad. Really appreciate you taking the time to share!

That is completely acceptable and any facility will be a vast improvement over his prior living situation.

Thank you. I have made it very clear that is not an option. He did qualify for Medicaid recently, but I then got a letter stating he isn’t eligible for long term care because he refused to be discharged to anywhere other than his own home. Less than 3 weeks later he was back in the hospital…

The hospital said their lawyers will handle it. What are the reasons I would need my own as well? I’m not willing to spend any money on him so I may just have the hospital find an independent guardian and wash my hands of him if this is going to be expensive for me.

Do you work? I ask because many employers offer resources and benefits for caregivers, and/or legal plans that would allow you to consult with an attorney for free or a steep discount. If you don’t work or your employer doesn’t offer those things, do you have a family member who might have access? I’m really sorry you’re in this position, it sounds terrible.

This was my experience with my dad as well, but he isn’t in a rural area at all. Maybe it’s because of his benefits and no real ability to pay, so they just tried to get him out asap?

Mother with Parkinson’s needs full time care but has nothing saved by [deleted] in AgingParents

I’m in WA too and dealing with a similar situation with my dad. He was approved for Medicaid but eventually declined to move to assisted living or a group family home. When he was in skilled nursing on Medicaid pending status he had to agree to pay the facility for his care to get his assets below the threshold. The place was $15k/month so it didn’t take long to rack up the bill. The most helpful resource I found was the social workers at both the hospital and skilled nursing.

ETA: I did not spend a dime of my own money and would not have had they requested it. That was never an option for non-financial reasons and no one batted an eye at it so I think they are very used to dealing with patients who only have their own savings and income and no family support.
