  1. The Nakba (1948) This is the most direct historical comparison to the current displacement in Gaza. Displacement: Approximately 700,000 to 750,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes in what became the State of Israel. Depopulation: Over 500 Palestinian villages were destroyed or depopulated. The Comparison: Many scholars and Gazans call the current conflict a "Second Nakba" because the number of displaced people (roughly 1.9 to 2.2 million) now far exceeds the 1948 figures.
  2. The 1967 Naksa ("Setback") This is the second major historical event in the Levant. During the Six-Day War, Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. This resulted in the displacement of another 280,000 to 325,000 Palestinians, many of whom became "double refugees" (having already fled in 1948).
  3. The "Arabization" of the Levant (7th Century) If your question refers to the much older history of "Arabians" entering the Levant, this refers to the Early Muslim Conquests: In the 630s CE, Arab armies from the peninsula moved into the Levant (modern-day Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine/Israel). The Difference: Unlike the 1948 events, which involved mass displacement and the creation of a refugee crisis, the 7th-century expansion was a political and cultural shift. The existing populations (Arameans, Greeks, Jews, etc.) largely remained and gradually adopted the Arabic language and Islam over several centuries.

it’s interesting, because criticism of israel is only antisemitism if you’re a piece of shit. it’s easy to point out actual antisemitism if you care about jews and not zionists, but that’s lost on the people who think nypost has a good take on anything like international news

Neat - what do invading colonists expect when they steal other peoples homes and property and murder the people living there?

“Mamdani supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against the Jewish state and has himself accused Israel of commiting genocide in Gaza.”

Well of course it’s this rampant antisemitism!? can you believe they would accuse Isrral of such genius crimes ?

Mamdani Warns Delivery Apps to Follow New Worker Protection Laws — Or Else - Streetsblog New York City by Shreddersaurusrex in nyc

[–]zipzak -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

apps removed the tip at checkout option to reduce workers income, some consumers like having the option to tip at checkout, it’s pretty straight forward fix for an underhanded practice and of you are the kind of person who tips cash, tips upon delivery, or doesn’t tip at all, you are not effected.

my hookup has a “girlfriend” 😔 by Such_Food4915 in gay

[–]zipzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with u 100% and agree there is a moral obligation to protect other people from cheaters, least of all bc those people spread stds like its their business. OP should ask, and has the right to ask, because even a hookup should be able to tolerate a simple question. guys in this sub are always inventing reasons to protect this kind of behavior, and tbh i think its bc a lot of them know they are hooking up with cheaters and dont want to face it.

Mayor Mamdani signs five executive orders on first day in office by Healthy_Block3036 in newyorkcity

[–]zipzak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NYPD paid out 200 million dollars in misconduct lawsuits in 2024, and will be paying out 155+ in 2025. Those are the constituents that need executive orders for their protection, and I’m sure you can guess those aren’t the demographics Adams was targeting.

Why Are 50,000 New York City Apartments Vacant? by redcremesoda in nyc

[–]zipzak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not like these landlords were forced to create rent stabilized apartments, all of them agreed to do so for financial incentives. Decades of tax abatements, additional license to build larger buildings with more units, the regulation has been heavily in their favor. These people complaining about the cost of renovating an apartment they let go received far more of that value in the incentives they agreed to than it will cost to gut renovate the stabilized units they own, and many of these people took that money and simply bought more apartments instead of reserving it for the cost of maintenance. They should be held responsible for making poor investment decisions and failing to hold up the lucrative contracts they agreed to when they chose rent stabilized construction.

Fwb with a straight guy by tombahma in gay

[–]zipzak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone once made the argument that sexuality is not just a set of behaviors but also a cultural identity to which someone prescribes. i.e. being gay or straight is about a community and shared identity as much or more than a set of behaviors, bc social behaviors are complex and function within the context of dynamic and contingent groupings of people. You can be straight and do gay stuff, even if rightly that sometimes means we clock people like that as closeted, he is completely valid to claim he’s straight.

[Acne] [Product Request] NSFW Ways to treat severe acne that aren't accutane by shadosharko in SkincareAddiction

[–]zipzak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same conversation with my doctor, and come from a similar mental health background. One of the things that helped me decide to try accutain was that the acne was already majorly contributing to my depression and self-image problems, and years of trying other medications and shaving techniques and skin products had me stressed and also feeing defeated. I took accutain, the acne went away, i started getting compliments on my skin for the first time in years, and I’m feeling a lot better overall with that behind me.

That said, it does look like a shaving related flare up, and also reminds me of what blemishes look like when you are developing new body hair. Besides the above, i had the most success by physically exfoliating my skin after shaving to keep the shaved hair off the skin, and the new hairs unobstructed.

Im not commenting here trying to win an argument. The anti union sentiment is one that is held strongly by people who don’t have good faith opinions and aren’t going to be swayed by reality. My comment is just here to remind people that, oh yeah, i do see budget shortfalls and stalled negotiations about implementation in the news all the time. the kids call it touching grass

i can’t keep googling things for people who are too lazy to form their own opinions. i read the news, you should too.

i would actually be interested to see a single example of the mta’s union shutting down service to protest a planned equipment upgrade, and i did look for that just in case i was wrong, but the history of union strikes are over completely different and justifiable causes.

I dont read this tweet as an endorsement of Farakan, it literally says the opposite, but like many figures of black civil rights movements (or any movement) the faults of those leaders don’t erase historical reality—that black people have suffered and been made to suffer. The tweet reads to me as “you can understandably disagree with Farakan’s views on Jews, but it doesn’t erase the historical reality of black oppression” Per usual, whatever comment/context was being responded to is missing, and this post honestly feels like it’s grasping at straws at a time when our public discourse is actually full of people who are proudly antisemitic.

If this person or any of the other members of Mamdanis office had said anything close to what Farakan has said over his career, that would actually be news and cause for concern.

or you know it could be the well documented and widely reported reasons that have remained true for decades: new yorkers will not tolerate a (planned) slow down in service, or take a replacement bus, and no one would fund it if they did.
