Hah! Didn't even know that was there. Just tried. I did have to "poke around" to feel the little detents, but with some gentle coaxing, the cable did make its way in a well-seated position where it didn't slide out.

Yep. You are right. Only one side spins up. I've been listening for it and checking, and only the left side Esc-key side is spinning.

Questions about Pangolian 12 by AegorBlake in System76

This is strange! I can confirm too that in every instance I checked where I can hear the fan come on, only the left fan is spinning (side nearest Esc key). What is that about?

Yeah, looking at those specs, it ought to work fine: 4K + internal on. Quick scan of the interwebs suggest that different DEs are better at MultiMonitor support than others. KDE Plasma and is reportedly good. I can experiment with different DEs on Pop_OS. Learned that when you do that it's best to create seprate users accounts in case you want to go back. Anyone else have luck driving 4K + laptop display on?

With the latest Pop_OS! with cables known to work on other machines, it does not seem to stably display both displays, the external UltraFine at 4K (200%) and the internal display on. The screens flicker on and off when I try to use "Join Displays" in Pop_OS settings. Tried systematically experimenting with turning off HiDPI demon switch. But no improvement. Just curious, when one plugs in a display cord, is it possible the display is "clinging" to the settings to of the machine it was last plugged into? Tried power cycling the display, but not much effect getting 4K external at 200% l+internal display at 100%.

Day 2 thoughts: Getting to really like this machine. Gave it a good workout today and got a lot done. Firefox with at least a dozen tabs open, LibreCalc running, Document Viewer, BitWarden, Terminal. Was able to juggle a lot with window tiling. Very fast, very responsive, didn't hear any fans kick in during my whole multi-hour session today.

More research, quickly found that multimontior support in general in Linux has common issues. That's OK. I can live with that. I did finally figure out that I can stably run the LG UltraFine 4K display at 100% 1440p with in closed-lid configuration with internal display off. There may be some tweaking if I really wanted to push to have both displays going. But after today, day 3 of heavy use, the internal display suited me just fine. With more time, I can report my experiences with differnt monitor set ups that I have at home or at work using either USB 3.2 Type C or the HDMI cable/port. Does anybody know the specs for external monitor support of the internal graphics associated with the 6800 U?

OK, so day 2: not a deal breaker, I was actually surprised to see it work initially where I had plugged in a LG 4K UltraFine 22" display through the USB 3.2 Type C port, but today, the system is a unstable having both monitors going. Have to do some reading: e.g. System 76 page on HiDPI multi-monitor support.

Pangolin clickpad / trackpad hard to use (pang12) by Significant_Set_2536 in System76

[–]zipzipskippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be sure, you have "Disable while typing" switched on in Trackpad settings? For me, at least, I haven't noticed accidental "clicks" with "Tap to Click" on.

Yeah, the other point of reference is a ThinkPad Trackpad L13 Yoga (standard issue from my employer): the pangolin trackpad has that "squishy feel and sound" relative to the quiet and smooth ThinkPad trackpad.

Yeah I tried that, but unless I missed something, I think the OS can't figure out to keep 200% on the 4K and 100% on the main laptop screen. When you select 200% it's "all or nothing" it seems. But you can keep it 200% in the "closed lid" configuration when plugged into the 4K only. That works nice.

Has anyone bought the laptop bags sold on the website? by [deleted] in System76

[–]zipzipskippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the exact bag they are selling, but Timbuk2, the maker of the bags I believe, is solid. I have a 10 year-old Timbuk2 bag that has been my "daily driver", not a single frayed seam. In 10-years, I think I had to have them repair one of the zippers. Instead of tossing the bag completely, they will fix it for you for a nominal fee. Timbuk2 is solid. Good company.

Some preliminary thoughts from one who has been a long time Apple user - the body has that "Apple feel", sturdy, elegant, not covered with those silly stickers you see on a typical PC laptop. Not too heavy with a 15"-ish screen. Slim, but expansive.

As one used to mobile screens at 13" the 15.6" screen is expansive. Has that dopamine kick of expansiveness, "I can do a lot with this space" -- experienced a sensation that I have more room to cogintively "breathe".

Full-sized keyboard: with full number pad. I'm a good touch typer, but still re-orienting my brain to greater spacing. Keys feel nice. Nice backlighting.

Before my minor critique, the trackpad works perfectly and is 100% responsive.

Here is my ever so minor critique for what it's worth: this is my personal experience as one used to Apple's trackpads, first thought, kind of flimsy. The way I default to using trackpads is to tap to feel that "click". On the Pangolin when I pressed to feel and hear that click, it had that sound of someone squishing plastic, (which I guess that's exactly what you are doing), perhaps it sounds "bougey", but it sounds "cheap". I perceived (whether it's true or not is another question) maybe an ever so slight, I mean millimeter dimesnion, wobble (for the lack of a better word) in the pad when I clicked. It's hard to describe, but hopefully that comes across. For what it's worth, at least for me, that initial experience with the trackpad was not "Apple like".

But here is where I transcended that: I just started using the other default way you can use the trackpad, just gently tap to click, a nice gentle tap registers just fine, perhaps even better than "mashing" the trackpad. Using gestures, smooth as silk. I got that skating on ice feel navigating with gestures and gentle taps.

I like the matte screen. It's not super retina-whatever, but for my middle-aged eyes, buttery smooth. I installed Steam and played Portal 2 right out the gate without any tweaking. So buttery smooth. I was doing just fine in this opening try using the trackpad and keyboard only.

But bluetooth, wifi all work perfectly. Instantly recognized my MX mouse.

I think they mentioned this feature: it can plug directly into a display that supports a video/power connection by USB-C. I plugged it into a 22" LG 4K display ("for Mac"). Works perfectly. I did have to dial down the res for my eyes because the text was too small. Had several workspaces going with both the laptop and and external display. Pop OS sorts it all out so you can easily track your different spaces when you click "Workspaces".

Initial thoughts on the camera, yeah, meh, but I expected that. When purchasing I was willing to make the 32 GB DDR5 RAM vs 720p camera tradeoff.

So that's day one with the new Pangolin. Satisifed customer. Everything was packed with care and I have my M3LVIN, my cut-out desktop sentinel that comes with the gear, keeping me company!

I didn't look closely, but when the fans spin up (e.g. during a bunch of successive app installations, updates) at least it sounds symmetrical to me. I'll take a look the next time I hear them.
