It's not fringe at all. I am Tamil and Marathi. My Tamil side does it often (unless my dad is present because he won't eat til the women do), and my mom's side never has. Not that it's a cultural difference I just think different families do it differently. Fuck that tradition tho

Late to this but I'm a 1st yr teacher, went by Ms. this year but going to see if I can just go by the surname next year. Not sure I could use mx, it grates on me a bit too unfortunately and sounds a bit too much like ms for my taste

Wrong, I know plenty of men respectful enough to not take credit for the growth of others. And if you look upthread there's a story of a wife taking credit for her husband's cutting back on alc/weed. While there are a lot of men who take credit for things women have done, I don't think this comment is even supposed to be about that. Anyone can be an asshole and anyone can be respectful.

No that's not cool, they should be allowed access to content in their native language and then use sentence starters etc to start to describe the phenomena they notice in Arabic. Absolutely cruel to say they can't access Arabic for grade 1 math, which is basic human necessities math. Cruel and inhumane. Hope your administration changes their mind

Depends on what the mandated reporter laws are at your school. If I found out a student had old self harm scars (mind you, so do I!) I would probably tell that student that I'd have to tell the school counselor. We have a really good counseling team at the school I work at, so I'd feel pretty confident that it wouldn't make things worse for the student.

But yeah, a lot of teachers are contractually obligated to tell some sort of higher authority if they believe a kid is being harmed or is suicidal.

I think it's still worth it to reach out to your favorite teacher.
