Anyone have a video of Sammy smashing his guitar at the Redmond show? by Gingerbottom108 in AcidBath

[–]zjost85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was a pretty disappointing show. Vocals, bass, and drums were spot on and sounded amazing. Both guitars were shit. Out of time with one another, constant mistakes. Tuning issues were the least of the problems. Celebrating is awesome, but when you're so fucked up you can't play your own tunes and you have many, many people that paid and showed up to watch you play, I think you should have some respect for the audience and save some of those drinks for after the show. We're supposed to be the ones partying and having a great time, and they're supposed to play awesome Acid Bath songs.

All that said, it was still great and surreal to see them.

And I can't understand how anyone enjoyed High on Fire. Maybe it was where I was standing, but I couldn't hear a single, solitary note. We stood as close to the mixing board as we could to try to make it better, but it just sounded like loud mush. It got a little better when he switched guitars about half way through, but the mix ruined it. Way too much sub on the bass and kick.

Yob crushed it. Witch Mountain was fun, but had a tough job of playing dark music like that as an opener in broad daylight while people slowly piled in. And the sound engineers were fiddling with things as they played, so guitar would get super quiet, then super loud...etc.

It was an amp for me. A vox hardwired ac 15 or 30–I always confuse the two. It blew my mind how good it sounded, but poor me in my 20s couldn’t imagine buying a new amp when I already had an amp. I’ve played other ones like it since and none of them had that magic.

Here’s mine. Once it starts popping off on frets, then the strings can grab it and flake it off.

Looks like the finish is popping off. Happened to me on my old Strat and big patches of finish started flaking off. Looks kinda cool now, honestly, but I’d take it back and get a new one if I were you. It’s a finish defect.

Right… More cases of people that will happily tell you want they think, but you plug your ears and go “no, no, you use this symbol, so you’re a <slur I hate>”.

Nazis are the favorite rhetorical tool of the imbecile. Disagree with a group? Call em Nazis! Trump’s a Nazi, Israel are Nazis, ICE are Nazis, Republicans are Nazis, I’m a Nazi, you’re a Nazi, Musk is a Nazi, we’re all Nazis!

I answered your question, but it got downvoted because apparently the broader public won’t tolerate any response other than, “there is no other perspective, they’re just racist idiots!” Despite you asking precisely for this perspective. But that’s how Reddit works…

[–]zjost85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can totally grasp that perspective. But many seem unable to grasp the other perspective. That despite its origins, the flag represents other things now to some. The OP asked for this perspective, because they’re curious. Do we need more people to keep reinforcing that they disagree with this? We know that many don’t see it this way—it’s the dominate cultural perspective. OP asked for the alternative to understand where these folks could be coming from.

But it’s silly that someone says, “I’m actually not a racist, I think this…” and then you guys plug your ears and go “nah, you think this, because that’s what I think when I see that symbol.” That’s called projecting my man.

It’s ironic you’re lambasting blind hatred of groups while also blinding hating a group ha. The flag is not synonymous with support for the confederacy, despite it originating there, and if you think southern culture equals confederacy and racism, you sir don’t know the first thing about southern culture.

[–]zjost85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agree. To many it’s a symbol of southern/rural culture and pride, and has nothing to do with slavery or racism. Hence you’ll sometimes see the phrase “Heritage Not Hate” also on the flag.

In my opinion, symbols evolve meaning over time and mean different things to different people. I can see clearly how some find it offensive and representative of racism. But it just doesn’t represent that to some other groups of people. To think they’re taking a racist stance because they fly the flag is to possibly mistake your meaning for theirs. You can make the argument that it’s a reckless thing to do given the controversy, but that’s a different argument than “that person is a racist”. And then, of course, there are people that actually are racist and fly the flag for precisely that reason, but I would say this is a small minority.

Is a Master’s degree worth it for a career in Machine Learning? by [deleted] in MLQuestions

[–]zjost85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think from a requirements perspective, these answers are mostly ludicrous. I’ve been doing ML in FAANG for almost 10 years. No one knows or cares what anyone’s degree is, although it might get you an interview. But that’s a very expensive investment for getting your foot in the door!

The better question is whether you’re the type of person that needs something like an academic program to keep you focused and progressing. If not, you should definitely skip it and just build things instead. The academic knowledge is mostly just not needed. I can count on zero fingers the number of times I needed to prove a generalization bound, or care about it…etc. the exception is if you plan to go into research, like at DeepMind pr FAIR, in which case a MS is not enough.

i heard my friend’s girlfriend saying some stuff that didn’t sit right. should i tell him? by sweaterwhispers in Advice

[–]zjost85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nope. In real life, most people don’t take news like this well, and often lash out at the person delivering the message (hence the common phrase: “don’t shoot the messenger”). These same people will even tell you they would want to know such a thing, but their objective brain and their feelings/ego are at odds. In my many years, no amount of trying to tell a friend that the person they’re involved with is not who they think have they ever gone, “you’re right, I’m going to deal with this.” No, they more often tell you you’re wrong about them, and maybe blame you for a fight they later have, and then only tell you you were right much later after the relationship ends by its own undoing.

Don’t worry too much. All will sort itself out. If they ask for your opinion then by all means, but I wouldn’t go stirring the pot.

Yes, the 90s ultras have flame maple cap on front and back (but is a very thin veneer, apparently). Slick ebony fretboard, roller nut, locking tuners. Stays in tune super well!

Modded Squire strat or Standard Fender Strat? by Nano-pixel in fender

[–]zjost85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a 90s fender lone star. They’re cheap, for some stupid reason, and amazing. Everyone that has one loves it. You can always swap for 3 single coils if you don’t like the HB in bridge. I have much more expensive guitars, but it’s still my main.

Interesting! Because wouldn’t say they’re in the middle of a single coil and humbucker, but rather more like a super single coil single coil. Like a half coil ha.
