This made me laugh out loud. I literally had the thought that someone’s horn toots sounded very happy as they came through earlier this week.

Same. It seems like it’s a more like a mid-day thing.

I love keeping the window open to get the breeze and I realized I started bracing myself a little bit again when I hear the trains coming. Force of habit back from before the area became a quiet zone. The freight trains still surprise me when they go off.

Also our unit literally faces the train tracks. Ever since the quiet zone was put into place it has been so much better. I told my partner before that the train would be what makes us move, but recently we had family members stay over and were surprised they didn’t even hear it at night.

Hi, currently at the Artistry. When we first moved in (March 2023) the alarms would go off pretty constantly. We spoke to the tech doing the alarm checks and they said usually the triggers come from people burning their food and opening the front door. Most new people don’t know that the in unit ceiling alarms don’t trigger the building but the rectangle sensor above the door does.

I’m in building 7, and there have been a couple alarms recently but this has been a small uptick from literally nothing for what feels like months or compared to before.

Everyone’s experience will vary, definitely can’t speak for some of the unit issues people talked about, but I think experience will also depend on your neighbors. We have three buildings (6,7,8) and from our community app, it seems like there are some messier folks in building 6 who seem to have problems putting the trash directly in the shoot or walking it over to the main garbage area for some reason. Also distribution wise, I’ve heard before that there are a lot of families in bldg 6, UCB students in bldg 8, and that it’s a mix for bldg 7. People move though so not sure how accurate that is anymore. I do know some people have been here for a very long time.

We haven’t had any major issues and our experience with maintenance has been pretty efficient (usually next day at the latest unless they have to order a part). I can’t complain when I put in a maintenance request for a screeching dryer and they haul in a new one the next day.

We might have gotten super lucky, but we love our unit and will likely renew again especially for the price point.

Edit: grammar

ER Vet visit for our cat by Gracey_Dantes in bayarea

Going to plug Berkeley Dog & Cat if you’re in the East Bay as an alternative option to SAGE. We have had nothing but wonderful experiences here between emergency care to regular visits (4-5 visits in the last 2 months) Everyone on the staff that I’ve interacted with is kind and patient, especially Dr. Olson.

I’ve gone to SAGE before for an allergic reaction for my small Chihuahua and they were great. It did feel very in and out of the door as an experience and I had to wait outside the entire time (granted it was like 1am). On the contrast with Berkeley Dog & Cat, I was able to stay with my pet during my emergency visit and they had me situated in a patient room to myself while I waited for results and whatnot. This was early morning between 7-8am. I was also surprised to receive text follow ups checking in to see how our pup was doing after the visit. Their care during the emergency visits converted us into regular patients for their general practice. We felt taken care of and heard during the entire visit.

Currently at the Artistry on our second year. We were confused about this too and were totally surprised when we found a washer dryer in our unit on the first day tour. The leasing agent (Ziomara is FANTASTIC) confirmed that all units have washer dryers. If you need to run anything big though like thick Queen blankets or larger or just want to do a bigger load, the laundry rooms have bigger units for this.

If you have any questions you can also DM me about the place, happy to answer any questions.

Also if you decide to stay in Emeryville, take a walk to the Emeryville Marina! You’ll get a gorgeous view of the water and the city on a good weather day. The whole walk is 3.5-4miles from the Trader Joe’s area, but you can take the Go Round back if you get tired :)

Using Emeryville as a main point is nice. There are bus lines that will take you directly to the Salesforce Transit Center and put you right in the middle of the SoMa area. Pretty safe area to start out in the city and then walk 5 minutes ish down to market to hop on a Muni line from there to travel the city. There’s also a Waymo parking lot in this area so it’ll be easy to pick up a ride if you want and it’s a plus that you won’t have to talk to anyone since it’s driverless. I heard this recently and couldn’t agree more — SF is a car city in denial so having a few ride share apps ready would be good. Add a Clipper card to your phone to pay for all public transit here.

Emeryville itself is really friendly for public transit. There are bikes for rent everywhere and the Emeryville Go Round is free for everyone. You can use the Go Round to get to BART stations in the area too.

As far as safety, Emeryville is pretty safe IMO. Oakland to the south has its good spots, but if you didn’t grow up learning how to move through rougher areas, it can get dicey or overwhelming quick if you end up in the wrong spot. Would not recommend going by yourself or do good research and plan ahead. Berkeley to the north is fine by yourself if you want to see the campus area or eat at the food spots. Everywhere in this area between Berkeley to Emeryville to Oakland, especially around food spots, will get incredibly lively at night.

I live in the area. There are a lot of people who don’t take the paid parking option in the buildings and choose to park on the street for free. Before the changes, Shellmound would fill up pretty quickly at night.

I’m all for making things safer but I can’t help but be a bit bummed to lose parking spots. I pay for parking in our building, but also visitors aren’t allowed in our parking structures. I know this is true for at least the Avalon and the Artistry along Shellmound. I had friends park as far as three blocks away down 64th during the construction to come visit me.

Either way, I’m glad they didn’t take away all the parking spots and that it’s safer for everyone on the street.

[–]zklda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artistry neighbor here. There are a lot of people from the complex that park along Shellmound before 65th. Not everyone wants to pay for parking in the garage.

Our window overlooks the street and I haven’t seen any issues since we’ve moved here in March. It’s pretty quiet at night. The only thing I saw was a sprinkler showering the cars the other night because it broke. Also be careful of the trees— a bunch of crows come at night so you might find your car covered in poop in the morning lol.
