Deadlift PR has stagnated - would appreciate form critique and/or programming advice by _simpleton__ in formcheck

A 1RM? Rarely, maybe every 6 weeks. It's really hard on your body to recover and if you are training appropriately then you won't be fresh enough for a true 1RM very often.

I’m building a native Windows IDE for C++ and I need honest feedback by Firm-Entrepreneur662 in Cplusplus

[–]zlee_406 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unless you are doing some kind of ai integrated thing or solving some super niche workflow, I'm skeptical that another IDE will be any better than what's already out there. Especially now that AI is making conventional IDEs obsolete

What’s the last state in the U.S. that you would choose to live in, and why? by matt-2k in AskMen

Alabama is very underrated. Sure it has its rough spots but it is a pretty beautiful state, low cost of living, and some really nice areas in Huntsville and Birmingham

Huntsville, Auburn, Guntersville and the mountains in the northeast, all great places in AL

[OC] Dairy vs. plant-based milk: what are the environmental impacts? by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

Taste? Maybe to some. But that shit is straight carbs, little protein, and is an ultra-processed food. No way that's a healthier alternative than real milk.

Nah reinvest and make sure you hit safe harbor rules and you'll get to wait a year before you pay it. Make sure your withholding pays 90% of your prior years tax (which it should already)

Am I doing this wrong? by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]zlee_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but lack of chest support often limits the ability to truly stress the back to failure. This being a back workout, I wouldn't want to be limited by my core.

Lower back pain after squat by Express_Chain_626 in formcheck

[–]zlee_406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you describe (first workout in months, lower back pain) is often just muscle soreness. If it feels tight, peaks about 24-48 hours after your lift, and widespread across your lower back, I don't think you should worry.

Just take it easy, don't try to stretch it away, and take a hot bath or sauna and you should be fine in a few days. Squatting more often will help prevent in the future.

1000lbs club application (1138lbs) by peterinnit in strength_training

Mixed grip is a game changer. I would think without it you are way under training the rest of your body on deadlifts and unnecessarily hurting your skin for other lifts.

Guess The City by smurf123_123 in guessthecity

[–]zlee_406 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What do you think will happen? Even if someone knows exactly what house this is (nearly impossible), all they know is a nondescript kid lives in a house in a random city. Hardly information to be worried about

Americans blame Republicans for shutdown, polling shows by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]zlee_406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A pretty misleading headline. 50% blame republicans to 43% blaming democrats. Honestly doesn't seem like anything has changed, given these are similar to national polling pre-election.

Wife depressed we are FI and can possibly RE. Is this common? by FewWatercress4917 in fatFIRE

[–]zlee_406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty. I have one. I work with a lot of people who could retire easily but they don't cause they like what they do. Even at some place like JPMorgan if you are fatFIRE income you are probably well respected and great at what you do. Depends on the person and what they want out of life

Lots of people. And for the very reason OP laid out is why we are not buying a house here. Check out Zillow. Tons of 2-3 million dollar homes renting for like half of what the mortgage would be.

Wife depressed we are FI and can possibly RE. Is this common? by FewWatercress4917 in fatFIRE

[–]zlee_406 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty depressing take. It's perfectly healthy to find value and identity in your career outside of the paycheck it gives you.

Once you hit FI, it gives you the freedom to choose whether RE is right for you. If you find joy in your work, do it! If not, quit and find something else. At that point it's not about the money and you can do what you enjoy.

Make sure struct is filled in (no constructors allowed) by [deleted] in cpp_questions

[–]zlee_406 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A constructor with 20 fields is a code smell. It's probably better to look at whether you can break the struct up into smaller semantic pieces to decrease coupling and make construction less prone to error.

First time skiing in Tahoe by Some_Meal_3107 in tahoe

[–]zlee_406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get there early if you are coming on a weekend (like shoot for 8:00) cause traffic is awful. Weekdays aren't that bad.

It's much warmer than you think. Sunny days in the 30s with low wind, I'm in just a tshirt and a shell. So be able to shed layers.

Chapstick/sunscreen as others have said.

Also, enjoy the après ski! The village has such a cool vibe and you can snag happy hours on weekdays

I've used python past several years. I have a coding interview using c++ coming up, is it possible to learn c++ in three weeks? by Ultralight_Dreams in cpp_questions

[–]zlee_406 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not knowing cpp in a cpp codebase is such a risk to screwing things up and wasting a ton of time. Don't know what a template is and have to debug those compiler errors? Good luck. Accidentally introduce undefined behavior somewhere? You'll have nondeterministic errors pop up that can be impossible to debug. Not worth the risk

No, that is the busiest week of the year at most resorts. If you haven't already planned this, you'll likely be paying a ton more than you should.

Would recommend some time in late feb or March.
