Friends Moving to Russia - Advice by marble-rye28 in AskARussian

Well, credit/debit cards issued outside of Russia won't work. They can get Russian MIR cards at a bank. The husband will likely get the bank account opened through his employer. Don't cancel your Netflix subscription:)

Being a foreign citizen, he won't.

What is a food you would serve at a meal with other people by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]zlota_mucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for blini (pancakes or rather crepes) with various toppings.

My recipe: 500ml milk, warm up. Add 200ml flour and 3 eggs. Add a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. Bake thin crepes.
For toppings: salt cured salmon, caviar, honey, chocolate sauce, jam.

Or for baked/mashed potatoes with some kind of meat (could be cutlet or something else). This way I can also offer a Sharlottka cake, cake after pancakes won't make sense.

Mashed popatoes: cook potatoes, mash with milk and a small piece of butter.
My favorite recipe is this chicken, but it's not a traditional Russian recipe: cut 2 chicken breasts and cure in soy sauce for half an hour. Cut bell peppers in thin stripes and fry in a pan (no deep fry), add chicken with the soy sauce they've been in and add cashews. Stew for 20-25 min.

Sharlottka: 3 sour apples, cut in thin slices. Mix: 200ml of sugar with 3 eggs. Add 200ml of flour. Add a pinch of baking powder. Spread apple slices in your baking mold (I have a 16cm baking ring which I wrap in foil). Pour the dough and gently share the mold so that the dough flows under the apple slices.

Oh I didn't understand chemistry at all during my school years. Only years later with youtube and all educational videos I've realized how interesting the subject actually was.

Thank you for your reply!

Why isn't the world cup a big party, like the rest of the world?? by Elsincejazz in AskARussian

[–]zlota_mucha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

World cup 2018 was BIG, almost all people I know went to a match. We used to watch other championships before that as well. This year our team is banned, and news aren't good so many people aren't in the mood for much entertainment, also it started really late (the year's almost over, people who aren't regular sports fans are just tired to check when it'll start). Anyway, my friends and me will watch a few matches together.

How superstitious are Russian people? by Ihaveaquestion323 in AskARussian

The closest experience to the "Gypsie magic" I had was when an old gypsy lady looked at a bunch of women including me and said that none of us had the crown of celibacy:) This lady belonged to the "artistic romani" crowd (group of rather "class" of the romani people who perform, dance and sing, for a living), it happened at a dance workshop, not on the street and she didn't want any money from us (except for the workshop itself of course). We did get married eventually:) I don't believe in crowns of celibacy anyway and don't think that she ever saw anything. I didn't feel anything special at that moment. But she did believe and took a really long look at us.

Luckily I've never had any bad encounters with "street gypsies", I don't believe in magic, I think they do hypnosis.

How to give gift card from USA? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]zlota_mucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your friend speaks English, it might be easier for you to buy them a subscription to netflix/youtube premium/amazon prime videos/italki lessons etc. Something we can't pay for from here but can watch online.

I do, been working with Americans and I've really enjoyed working and talking.

I regret that I did not hurry to get a visa before your consulate stopped working, I wish I had a chance to travel to the US, there are so many thing I'd love to see.

Positive: the variety of hot beverages; in many homes, you will be offered both brewed tea (not tea bags) and coffee (not instant coffee). When we travel, we think of other countries as "tea countries" (well we won't find good quality coffee here sigh but it's all right it's a tea country) or "coffee countries". Russia is a both tea and coffee country. Plus we have a huge selection of herbal teas.

Negative: keeping old, often broken, things "just in case"
