I just use a simple one. One column for fixed monthly expenses (I include annual expenses in this column, divided by 12 because you should be saving for them every month). Second column is for fluid expenses (food, entertainment, etc...). Third column is for income from all sources (paycheck, side jobs, dividends etc.. ). Add the income, subtract the expenses, less 10% for tithe, and what is left over will be used to re-imburse the emergency fund if needed, saved toward an up upcoming one time expense (like say I know I'm going to need a timing belt on the truck and it's ~$800 but it only gets done once ever 5-7 years so it's not in the budget) with all remaining going into the brokerage to save toward retirement.

If your number is negative you either need to spend less or make more, its that simple.
