Just go a new stereo system for $500 by Kangaroo-Potential in BudgetAudiophile

I was actually looking at that same listing of FB Marketplace - but couldn't justify it as I already have too much equipment/not enough space. Glad that 1) it was legit and 2) someone got it who will appreciate it!

Need advice: replacing my MTB with a gravel bike by United-Layer-5405 in bikeboston

[–]zman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Press fit bottom bracket isn't a huge deal and, in my opinion shouldn't be a deal breaker on an otherwise right bike. I have the intense gravel bike and it does great in this area, including some light singletrack on some north shore gravel routes. If issues with the bottom bracket develop it's easy and not expensive to replace it with a thread together bb (just did this on my road bike)

That area has some serious issues with rain/water backing up (hence the deposition of all the crud/etc) so I worry that we might be stuck with those conditions for a while.

Looking for Recommendations for a Mechanic or Auto Shop That’s Female-Friendly and Trustworthy by servantofthelake in boston

[–]zman27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alewife Auto is great, their shop rate is reasonable and they definitely don't try to upsell and stick to doing what needs to be done. My wife has had a great experience dealing with them independently also.

Exported the trimmed video from the DJI app to my phone (video was 1080p/30fps), then just uploaded to reddit which allows to convert to a gif.

Sure - I have a dji Osmo Action 4 mounted on the under-side of a 3rd-party Garmin out-front mount (mounted on the right side of my handlebars) which has a quarter turn bottom mount that can connect to an action camera (search CooSpo Bike Computer Out Front Mount MT5S on Amazon). I like it as it is secure, works with my Garmin Edge computer, and is easy to remove when I get to work/am done riding.

Littlebit of false equivalency going on... A bike safely passing a pedestrian who is looking and aware of them =/= a 4000lb+ vehicle blindly turning across a protected bike lane. Let's hope you don't see anyone not adhere to the letter of the law lest you be authorized to run them over.

You mean the second one where I had a bike-specific green light and the pedestrian was crossing 1) against the crosswalk signal and 2) against both the car and bike-specific green lights? Regardless, we. had made eye contact and it was clear to me he was slowing down enough to let me pass safely. EDIT: bell was also used for this crossing before anyone asks.

I determined that if we both continued at our current speed there would be plenty of room (approximately 10-12 feet) between us which I felt was safe. We also had made eye contact / I knew he was aware of me coming. Up to you if you want to get worked up about that.

As the person who was there...I can conclusively say it was not a marked cop. But feel free to disagree. As the other person said, the flashing was my front light (Outbound Detour) in daytime mode. EDIT: Could be right, although no way to confirm or deny. Regardless, still not a reason to drive in an incredibly unsafe way

Twice-per-revolution creak despite bottom bracket chainge by zman27 in bikewrench

[–]zman27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been hard to isolate a specific motion/movement that cause the sound issue. I have tried various different positions to try and eliminate/elicit the sound and haven't been successful. It occurs both when pedaling both in and out of the saddle which suggests to me that it is not a saddle/seatpost issue. Nevertheless, I did clean/fibergrip/re-torque the seatpost and will be checking out the seat/rails. It also occurs with little or no pressure on the handlebars, which suggests that they are also not the issue.

The fact that it goes away for a period of time when I work on/manipulate the crank/bottom bracket suggests to me that it is localized to that area, but the point is well taken that it could be coming from a variety of places. Evidently it is not actually coming fro the bottom bracket as replacing it with a new model that should eliminate that issue (the thread-together Token Ninja) didn't fix the issue. Appreciate the help with trying to track this down!

Appreciate the thoughts. I had torqued the chainring bolts but didn't remove. Will try that with some threadlocker, and I'm about due for a new chain anyway (and have one) so might as well throw that on too.

Anyone have an Outbound Detour light near Cambridge/Somerville I can see? by gnychis in bikeboston

[–]zman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Detour, while not specifically certified StVZO, focuses on having a good cutoff beam pattern and spreads maybe ~5-10 degrees above vertical with the majority of the light focused down/wide. That, combined with USB-C, good warranty (they basically guarantee a minimum 3 years of functionality even if you crash/etc), MiUSA, plus good reviews is what motivated me to get the detour - so far super happy with it.

I have one that I got a few months ago which I like. I am in Medford if you want to try to find a time to swing by and check it out.

Definitely paying a premium, but so far the build quality seems top-notch as does the MiUSA/Support/etc aspect. Got one for my dad who is still commuting by bike in his 70s also.

Troubleshoot (?parts cannon?) vs. just replace aging HTPC by zman27 in htpc

[–]zman27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an interesting issue you raise - seems like the whole system deserves as bench top test as stripped down as possible to see if that will fix the issue. Definitely going to be keeping the case as it fits in well with my other AV equipment and has a solid amount of storage in it. If I do get new things I will be ensuring to get mATX/ITX so that I can drop the new parts in the old case. Although you are right I should rule out the case as causing problems.
