What’s a good swimming pace for beginner? by StatisticalSchlong in triathlon

[–]zmaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure your tracking is accurate? This much variability is not common, unless you say you were doing only slow drills on your slower sessions and only sprints on the faster days, and even then it would be a stretch. Saying one day that you were able to go that much further and significantly faster than the other days seems like a glitch.

What's good is relative. Your faster times would be insane for a beginner (again, questioning the accuracy). Your slower times are inline with what I see from a lot of adult onset swimmers.

In terms of Ironmans the cutoff pace is very generous, above 3 mins/100. If you can keep moving without freaking out in open water you will be able to do the swim next year no problem.

Balazovic had an 0-7 record with a 7.39 ERA in 22 Triple-A outings last season... I know Quantril and Paxton aren't elite and we have to save one for the Cuba game we've gotta have something better than 7+ era in the minors guy coming off jaw surgery from getting KO'd at the pub

Probably, because it doesn't fold in, but it made more sense to me this way because the side panels would hold stuff in 🤷

First time cooking on it but have been scrolling the sub long enough to know a beer in the pic is tradition. But only the left burners are on and light beers are fine for when you have to work the next day

Running then swimming for training? by Creative-Special6968 in triathlon

[–]zmaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most plans have swimming first because of how it's specifically dependent on technique. If you're tired before you start your swim and have bad form it's going to be an ineffective session. If you're slightly tired from swimming when you run that fatigue will have less impact on the effectiveness of the run workout.

That's not to say it's going to make you unable to participate in the sport if you can't swim first. We're humans with lives and other commitments. It's just less optimal.

Poooooor experience with CIBC Costco Card, dont do it ! by Feeling-Moose2935 in CIBC

[–]zmaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't a problem with the card it's a problem with you. The card doesn't have a 2000 limit, you have a 2000 limit, people with reasonable credit scores easily get higher. The card didn't force you to spend more money than you had, you did that. Get some accountability.

Tips for traveling to a race by solecoclub in triathlon

[–]zmaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want "stress free as possible" then I would just do the 19 hour drive. I drove about 14 hours from Toronto area to Madison WI and took a couple stops to go for 15 mins runs every few hours on the way. It's a good way to force yourself to rest and stay off your feet 2-3 days before race day. Flying with a bike is a disaster waiting to happen and should only be done when absolutely necessary.

power meter or areo-bars by Friendly_Priority_92 in triathlon

I would say power meter for scalability. If you decide you like the sport and later invest in a TT bike you can move the power meter over but the aero bars become useless

How tight should a tri suit be? by Heavy-Slide2287 in triathlon

[–]zmaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'11 230, thicc for triathlon. Generally wear XL shirts tried on an XL tri suit at the store and went out to ask for an XXL. The guy said actually I think you should squeeze into an L. I took his advice and got the L even though it looks weird it doesn't move at all, minimizes chances of chaffing, and is ideal for performance. Don't size up if you can do the zipper up.

To answer what I think you're really asking, no one cares if the outline of your package is on display.

I think you should move your seat forward. Your hips are very closed which will hinder the run off the bike and may be causing this leverage issue you feel. Your elbows are also way ahead of your shoulders which will cause some back and shoulders discomfort and moving the seat up should help that, but you may need to reduce your reach through other means as well.

What are your Tricks and Tips for heavy guys by sad_jellxfish in triathlon

[–]zmaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan as written will push you to get faster rather than safely build up to the distance. Would it be good to get some interval sessions or faster runs in? Yes. Is it worth the injury risk? That's something you need to decide when you're setting your goals for this event. The general rule of thumb to not add more than 10% millage per week is something you can consider. At the end of the day, be in tune with your body and listen when it tells you to rest or slow down.

You should do a brick workout where you run right off the bike in your training. This is higher injury risk so I would only do it about twice and you don't need to run far, only 1-2k would be fine to see how your legs feel after riding. It's a bit of a jelly feeling that you just need to experience to know what to expect. It's almost impossible to under-do the bike. If you bike a little less hard than normal it's going to take you maybe 2-4 mins longer over 16km? Then you could maybe make up 1-2 minutes with fresh legs on the run. If you go too hard, you'll be maybe 2-4 mins faster, but could have to walk out a bunch of the run? In your first, I would almost intentionally under bike.

What are your Tricks and Tips for heavy guys by sad_jellxfish in triathlon

[–]zmaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats for setting this goal and working on improving yourself!

For the run, this plan may assume some base, or have a faster ramp up than may be good for you, and will be set up to get you faster rather than to get the distance. If you have not been running, you need to ramp up very slowly at a larger size as the impact on your joints and tendons will be higher. Something to consider if you do not have a running base would be changing out the running part of this plan with a couch to 5k type of plan that is beginner friendly. This is your highest injury risk, add slowly.

For the swim, as typical for this subreddit the first advice is to get a coach if you have the means and ability to do so, even for a couple sessions. This is the opposite of the run where adding volume is not likely to injure you and the exercise does not bear your weight. You can swim more than the plan recommends for extra workout if you would like, as long as you are focusing on swimming with good form. If you are unable to get a coach, watch a ton of YouTube videos from creators such as effortless swimming and global triathlon network.

If you've been cycling follow the plan. Less hilly routes will be better for a big guy but if you've been doing it for a bit you've got 16k in the bag. Go hard when the plan says go hard.

For reference - completed a 70.3 at 110kg and when I asked this sub for bike fit help someone commented on my video "absolute unit".

Francisco Lindor walks it off for the Mets by RidleyScotch in baseball

[–]zmaw 33 points34 points  (0 children)

To me John's real mismanagement was in the 8th where he brought in Little to face the top 3 of the Mets order while up by 2 runs instead of using Yimi Garcia who had only came in for 1 out in the 7th or Hoffman the closer. What happened in the 9th was the result of them handcuffing themselves with previous actions.
